Fields, Foster?

Thoughts on [name_m]Fields[/name_m] and [name_m]Foster[/name_m] as first names?

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]My[/name_f] husband likes [name_m]Foster[/name_m], and I am digging it, too. But then the only feedback over heard from other people is that it immediately makes them think of foster care and that they think it would be odd to use as a name.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Fields[/name_m] has been on my long list for a while and I feel like it keeps popping up and I’m becoming more infatuated with it, but I’m not sure if it would be super practical in real life.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you like one more than the other? Should both be vetoed indefinitely? Any super strong impressions of either?

[name_f][/name_f]

Thank you!

Both are very handsome, though I like [name_m]Foster[/name_m] more

[name_f][/name_f]

That’s exactly how I feel about it too, to be honest. I immediately think of foster care when I hear it.

[name_f][/name_f]

That said, I’m not a fan of [name_m]Fields[/name_m], personally… It’s one of those word names that don’t sound like names to me, and I don’t love how it sounds. Objectively, if names like [name_m]Banks[/name_m] & [name_m]Wells[/name_m] can work, so can [name_m]Fields[/name_m], I just don’t personally enjoy this name as much as those two.

[name_f][/name_f]

I’d choose [name_m]Foster[/name_m] between the two!

Both are great options! [name_m]Foster[/name_m] is on my long list for his gentle charm & familiar sounds, & the only reason he doesn’t rank higher for me is because of the foster care association. However, if you & your husband both love the name then I say go for it – [name_m]Foster[/name_m] is an established name at the end of the day.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Fields[/name_m] is definitely on trend today, similar to choices like [name_m]Brooks[/name_m], [name_m]Banks[/name_m], [name_m]Hayes[/name_m], & [name_m]Rhodes[/name_m]. He’s not my personal favorite, but I definitely see why you like him – he’s got nature connections & familiar sounds and a great vibe overall!

[name_f][/name_f]

You can’t really go wrong with either, but I do personally favor [name_m]Foster[/name_m] between the two.

I personally would veto both for the reasons you mentioned. If I picked one, I would go with [name_m]Fields[/name_m] because kids are definitely going to be like “your parents named you [name_m]Foster[/name_m] even though you’re their biological kid?”

[name_f][/name_f]

One that comes to mind that has the same vibe and also starts with F is [name_f]Fallon[/name_f]!

[name_f][/name_f]

Other F-initial names:

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Forrest[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Felix[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Fletcher[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Florian[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Faraday[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Favian[/name_m]

[name_m]Fields[/name_m] is more usable imo, I personally really like it. More ideas:

[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Ferris[/name_m]

I love [name_m]Foster[/name_m]! I used to babysit a little boy named [name_m]Foster[/name_m] and he was such a sweet boy! [name_m]Frankly[/name_m], I like both [name_m]Fields[/name_m] and [name_m]Foster[/name_m] but I do prefer [name_m]Foster[/name_m], slightly more

[name_m]Foster[/name_m] is kind of a guilty pleasure of mine, for that reason. But, the word “foster” actually has a positive meaning, and it definitely has been used as a name before. So it’s definitely useable, but the “foster child” potential does give me pause.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Fields[/name_m] fits in with names like [name_m]Banks[/name_m] or [name_m]Rhodes[/name_m], so I feel like it’s useable too, but it’s one of those names that sounds better in theory than spoken out loud? It feels a bit awkward as name. Perhaps my opinion would be different if I knew one in real life though.

[name_f][/name_f]

Is [name_m]Fielder[/name_m] a possibility that combines the two? [name_m]Or[/name_m] maybe [name_m]Fletcher[/name_m]

I love Foster! If my husband were on board it probably wouldve been my pick if this baby was a boy. Personally I love the nn Fox for it.

I like Fields, but for some reason in my head it gets very literally and all I can think of is farm fields (not a bad association, just really strong for me) however I do have Fielding on my list.

[name_m]Foster[/name_m] has quite a strong history of use as a first name. It’s also a familiar surname and has the common ‘er’ ending sound. So I think it has quite a few credentials that make it work as a first name beyond the association with foster care, or the verb ‘foster.’

[name_f][/name_f]

Most names hold multiple associations anyway, and people are capable of separating the associations from each other. It might be odd in a hypothetical scenario, but once it’s a person’s name, it tends to be normalised after hearing it multiple times.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Fields[/name_m] sounds more like a word than a name but I’m sure I would adjust my thinking with more exposure. In theory, it’s similar to surnames like [name_m]Hayes[/name_m], [name_m]Wells[/name_m] and [name_m]Banks[/name_m] which will keep growing as a style, but [name_m]Fields[/name_m] is not particulary common as a surname.

[name_f][/name_f]

It also feels like it could belong to the nature category which is growing too. You could be really ahead of the curve with this one. I do hear [name_m]Fielder[/name_m] and [name_m]Fielding[/name_m] mentioned from time to time, if either appeal, using [name_m]Fields[/name_m] as a nickname.

[name_f][/name_f]

Verdict: Both names are usable and should stay on the list.

Replying to my own comment to mention [name_m]Fisher[/name_m] and [name_m]Frost[/name_m] as alternatives I just thought of

[name_m]Frost[/name_m] feels very literary! I really like [name_m]Fischer[/name_m] personally, but our surname is kind of a weird noun/verb situation that makes [name_m]Fischer[/name_m] harder to use. Although fields as foster are questionable with it, too. :joy:

I’m digging [name_m]Fielding[/name_m]!

[name_m]Foster[/name_m] nn [name_m]Fox[/name_m] is too cute!

I don’t know why I’ve never made a connection between fields and [name_m]Brooks[/name_m], [name_m]Wells[/name_m], etc. Those typically aren’t my favorite style of names so I’m unsure why I fell for [name_m]Fields[/name_m]. :joy:

[name_f][/name_f]

Our second boy was almost named [name_m]Fletcher[/name_m]!

[name_m]Ferris[/name_m] is high on my shortlist! [name_f]My[/name_f] husband has trouble getting past the [name_m]Bueller[/name_m] association but I don’t think it’s a negative one. :woman_shrugging:[name_f][/name_f] And finch is one of our fave middle options.

[name_f][/name_f]

I’m interested in [name_f]Fifer[/name_f] and Floren, thank you!

Our second was almost named [name_m]Fletcher[/name_m]! And [name_m]Felix[/name_m] was a top contender for him for a while.
[name_f][/name_f]Mom digging [name_m]Florian[/name_m], thank you!

[name_m]Ferris[/name_m] is at the top of my short list! [name_f]My[/name_f] husband gets hung up on the [name_m]Bueller[/name_m] association, but I don’t think it’s a bad one. :woman_shrugging:

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Franklin[/name_m], [name_m]Felix[/name_m], and [name_f]Arden[/name_f] were also strong contenders for our second and definitely still possibilities [name_f][/name_f]!
