Is it pronounced [name]Fin[/name]-[name]Lay[/name] or [name]Fin[/name]-lee?

[name]Fin[/name]-[name]Lee[/name] - I’ve been told this is the correct pronunciation with the original Scottish spelling. I expect some people would say [name]Fin[/name]-[name]Lay[/name], but I also expect some people will pronounce [name]Asher[/name] as [name]Ash[/name]-A, so there is a little bit of that with both names.

[name]Both[/name] are great names. I love the sound of [name]Finlay[/name]. You might have some spelling problems but I don’t think you should have too many prn issues.

[name]Finlay[/name] by leaps and bounds. It has that same Celtic connection that’s not in-your-face overt; it’s handsome, evocative and lovely. [name]Asher[/name] is fine, but not as perfect as [name]Finlay[/name].

I also don’t like how both [name]Asher[/name] and [name]Theodore[/name] end on the same sound. [name]Finlay[/name] [name]Theodore[/name] has excellent rhythm and phonetics.

Not a fan of [name]Asher[/name], but I love [name]Finlay[/name]! The [name]Asher[/name]/[name]Ashton[/name] names are too trendy for my liking. Also not masculine enough for me.

Okay, l really like [name]Finlay[/name], pronounced [name]Fin[/name]-lee!

I like both. I’d take both to the hospital and use the one that feels right.

I like them both - it was a really hard choice! But I think [name]Finlay[/name] is better - both because of flow with [name]Theodore[/name] and because [name]Fin[/name] is such a cute nickname!

[name]Asher[/name] [name]Theodore[/name]! I love it. I very nearly used [name]Asher[/name] [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Theodore[/name] when I was looking at [name]Asher[/name] combos. [name]Finlay[/name] [name]Theodore[/name] is nice, I just love [name]Asher[/name] [name]Theodore[/name] so much more.

Good luck!

It’s a close one, isn’t it! Lots of love for both. I think kala_way you are right that we should take both to the hospital. [name]Finlay[/name] means “fair-headed” and while I know I don’t have to take the meaning literally, there is a chance, due to genes, that he could be quite dark. Our daughter isn’t at all, so if he comes out with her colouring then [name]Finlay[/name] is perfect.

[name]Finlay[/name] is a spectacular name. [name]Asher[/name] is a name I’m not fond of much at all.
[name]Finlay[/name] also has the awesome NN of [name]Finn[/name], whereas [name]Ash[/name] is not to my taste.
With the MN of [name]Theodore[/name] (which is a great MN choice!), [name]Finlay[/name] also flows together much better.
For most people, both would be strong, viable options, but for me [name]Finlay[/name] is leagues better.

I like both names.
I voted [name]Asher[/name] as in my mind I pretended to call out “[name]Imogen[/name] and [name]Finley[/name]” then “[name]Imogen[/name] and [name]Asher[/name]” and the [name]Asher[/name] one seemed easier rolling off the tongue- probably due to [name]Imogen[/name] having an “N” in it like [name]Finley[/name]. [name]Finn[/name] as a nn makes that even more pronounced.
It’s not terrible or anything, just prefer the sound of [name]Asher[/name] with [name]Imogen[/name].
BTW- love the name [name]Imogen[/name]- very nice choice.

[name]Emilia[/name]

[name]Finlay[/name] [name]Theodore[/name] is adorable! It flows brilliantly and both names are so handsome. Definitely my pick, and [name]Imogen[/name] and [name]Finlay[/name] make a gorgeous pairing.

I love [name]Finlay[/name]! It’s different, you don’t hear it all the time.

[name]Asher[/name] is becoming much more popular and trendy. I personally am not really a fan of [name]Asher[/name], not sure why. It sounds nice, but it almost feels like a totally made up name, eventhough it’s in the bible somewhere.

Good luck. [name]Imogen[/name] and [name]Finlay[/name] is very cute

Thanks everyone for your opinions! In terms of popularity, [name]Finn[/name] (as a standalone name) is more popular here than [name]Asher[/name], by about 30 places from memory, but [name]Finlay[/name] doesn’t feature in our Top 100 and [name]Asher[/name] only entered this year for the first time. I’m not too worried about either name taking off too much though, [name]Imogen[/name] was right at the bottom on the Top 100 the year she was born and now, a few years later, it hasn’t made the cut.
emilliaj - I hear what you are saying about the n sound in both names and we have considered that, it was the reason we took [name]Tobin[/name] off our short list, they just sounded too much the same. And thank you, we adore the name [name]Imogen[/name], she suits it beautifully.
steph410 - I have a similar concern about [name]Asher[/name] sounding trendy, even though it is an old name and javad - I’m with you on preferring the nn [name]Finn[/name] to [name]Ash[/name], definitely. I think if we went with [name]Asher[/name] I would be very unlikely to shorten it (we don’t shorten [name]Imogen[/name]'s name but her friends and some teachers still call her [name]Immy[/name] - so it’s going to happen regardless and I think it’s important for kids to have the option of a nn if they want to use it themselves).

I’m thrilled with the mn [name]Theodore[/name], DH had said absolutely not when I put it out there as a fn, and I do think the flow is better with [name]Finlay[/name]. At this point I don’t have a clear winner and it looks like we might be waiting until he is born…which is going to be tough for me, I’m not a very patient person
