Finally a girl!

hi! We have four boys and just found out that our fifth baby is a girl! We are super excited and I want to get the name just right. Our boys are named [name]Kieran[/name], [name]Aidan[/name], [name]Gavin[/name], and [name]Brennan[/name]. We would like to include a variation of the name [name]Mary[/name] in our girl’s name. What do you think of these options?

  1. [name]Erin[/name] [name]Marie[/name]

  2. Maryn [name]Therese[/name] (pronounced ma-[name]RIN[/name])

  3. Ashlinn [name]Marie[/name]

Thanks for any help!

I really love the idea of Ashlinn [name]Marie[/name]! I would use the [name]Aislinn[/name] spelling, personally, or [name]Ashlyn[/name]. Ashlinn seems like a smoosh of both, and not quite as attractive as either. :frowning: I also would love to see [name]Aislinn[/name] [name]Maria[/name]/[name]Ashlyn[/name] [name]Maria[/name].

Are you open to other options? I think something like [name]Niamh[/name] [name]Maria[/name], [name]Fiona[/name] [name]Mary[/name], [name]Aoife[/name] [name]Marie[/name], [name]Brigid[/name] [name]Maria[/name]/[name]Bridget[/name] [name]Mary[/name]/[name]Bridget[/name] [name]Mariana[/name], [name]Brenna[/name] [name]Mary[/name]/[name]Brenna[/name] [name]Marie[/name], or even something like [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Marie[/name]/[name]Eleanor[/name] [name]Marie[/name] nn [name]Maggie[/name]/[name]Nora[/name] (which aren’t really Irish, but fit in with an Irish theme, imo, if that’s what you’re going for) would be lovely.

Good luck!

Congratulations!
I’m really liking Maryn [name]Therese[/name]. It’s beautiful and delicate, but also has a seriousness about it. I think it’s the most unusual of your options. Maryn has the Virgin [name]Mary[/name] association, and [name]Therese[/name] has the Mother [name]Theresa[/name] association. Also, Maryn means “of the sea,” and [name]Therese[/name] means “late summer,” so the name carries images of warm sun, the beach in summertime.

What about [name]Marion[/name]?
Something like [name]Marion[/name] [name]Eleanor[/name], [name]Marion[/name] [name]Isabel[/name] for example

[name]MARley[/name]!

  1. Maryn [name]Therese[/name] (pronounced ma-[name]RIN[/name])

With your four boys I prefer Maryn [name]Therese[/name]. I think it sounds fresh and simultaneously classical as well as slightly unusual and beautiful. Ashlinn isn’t quite my style - it makes me think of [name]Ainslie[/name] which I love but isn’t quite what you are looking for. I’d probably also stay away from [name]Erin[/name] as it sounds almost exactly like the boys name [name]Aaron[/name] and since this is your only girl I’d go with something that screams little lady instead of one of the bunch.

I like pp suggestion of [name]Marion[/name] and wanted to and [name]Marian[/name] and Marieanne as suggestions.

I also like Maryn [name]Therese[/name] best, I think it is a very pretty name and different enough from her brothers. I also think [name]Marian[/name] or [name]MaryAnne[/name]/[name]Marianne[/name] would be pretty!

Thank you for the thoughtful responses. We love all of the options, but I am especially glad to hear a couple of people like Maryn [name]Therese[/name]. As one poster noticed, there is an association with the Virgin [name]Mary[/name] as well as Mother [name]Theresa[/name] and ST. [name]Therese[/name], and I love that. I think it is my favorite, but I have mentioned it to a few people, who each looked a little negative and immediately suggested using [name]Mary[/name] instead. I was wondering if there was something wrong with Maryn! Thank you for the other suggestions too.

Our other concern about Maryn is the pronunciation. I guess it could be pronounce ma-[name]RIN[/name], [name]MARE[/name]-in, or even [name]Mary[/name]-in. I prefer ma-[name]RIN[/name] and prefer the spelling Maryn, as it includes [name]Mary[/name]. [name]Do[/name] you think this would be a big problem? My name is [name]Marianne[/name] and I always had to spell it for people, though it didn’t bother me. I guess I didn’t have issues with pronounciation, though. What do you think about the pronounciation issue for Maryn?

Thank you again and I’d be happy to hear any more advice.

I think Maryn is beautiful! My name is [name]Claire[/name], and I have to spell it for people all the time, which doesn’t bother me in the slightest. People may not know how to pronounce it upon first reading, but once they hear it, I think they will love it.

As an alternate, have you thought of [name]Moira[/name], [name]Maura[/name], or [name]Mara[/name]?

I agree with Clairedarling. If people don’t pronounce her name correctly at first, she can just correct them and move on. Besides, I think the most intuitive pronunciation of Maryn IS “[name]MaRIN[/name].” The spelling [name]Marin[/name] might be more common, but I think Maryn is far lovelier. Also, I think it’s more modern, more mysterious than [name]Mary[/name], and fits well with your boys’ names. I’m sorry to hear that friends have been discouraging about a name you love. Once they get used to hearing the name on your daughter, I’m sure they’ll come to see how pretty it is. I think [name]Marion[/name] and [name]Miriam[/name] are also nice versions of [name]Mary[/name], but I really like Maryn [name]Therese[/name] for you.

I wouldn’t use Ashlinn because of [name]Aidan[/name] and would stay away from the K B or G beginnings. I think Maryn is beautiful. Maryn [name]Therese[/name] would be my fav. What about [name]Malia[/name], [name]Maria[/name], [name]Martina[/name], [name]Marina[/name] or just the simple and classically beautiful [name]Mary[/name]?

I like Maryn the best. I think if you want to pronounce it ma-[name]RIN[/name], however, you should spell it [name]Marin[/name], like the city/county in Northern [name]California[/name]…otherwise, it looks like [name]MAR[/name]-in. You’ll have to correct a lot of speakers if you want it spelled AND pronounced the way you do. But I do think that the [name]MAR[/name]-in pronunciation of Maryn would go best with the pronunciation of your sons’ names. Ashlinn would be a lovely MN with Maryn (both emphasizing the initial syllable).

[name]LOVE[/name] Ashlinn [name]Marie[/name]- it continues the Irish theme and fits beautifully with your boys! Unlike most of the other posters, I’m not a fan of Maryn, it’s just not my style. I like [name]Erin[/name] but think it sounds a little too close to [name]Brennan[/name] and [name]Kieren[/name]. I love the suggestions of [name]Maura[/name] or [name]Moira[/name] or even [name]Maire[/name] if you’re feeling adventurous!

If you want a name with a straightforward pronunciation, Maryn isn’t it. I went to school with both a [name]Marin[/name] and a [name]Maren[/name]. (Oddly!) They both pronounced it [name]MARE[/name]-in. (Rhymes with [name]Karen[/name].) But from reading this thread, it’s clear that some would pronounce it [name]MAR[/name]-in and others Ma-[name]RIN[/name], as you prefer. And spelling it with a “y” would throw people off even more, at least momentarily. So, as lovely as Maryn is, if you truly want a name where there will be little or no confusion on pronunciation I would choose another one. There are soooooo so SO many [name]Mary[/name] variations out there that would be easier to live with.

[name]Marianna[/name]
[name]Maren[/name]
[name]Maisy[/name]
[name]Marian[/name]
[name]Miriam[/name]

Maryn [name]Therese[/name] is beautiful, and all your friends and family will pronounce it whatever way you do. [name]Love[/name] the Ma-ryn’ pronunciation.

I had a girl after 6 boys. I wanted very girly. I ended up naming her [name]Piper[/name]. I like to call her [name]Pippy[/name].

I do like all your options. They are all good names.

My top 2 would be Maryn [name]Therese[/name] (I actually prefer [name]Maren[/name], pronounces mare-in) and Ashlinn [name]Marie[/name] (I prefer [name]Ashlyn[/name] spelling). I do like that none of your others kids names start with a ‘m’, though. So I’d use Maryn [name]Therese[/name]. (That’s not a huge deal, though. And with the pronunciation you like, I would be prepared to correct people.)

I love [name]Maren[/name] the best, I must admit. Or Maryn, however you wish to spell it. I also like [name]Erin[/name]. You do not see that much, yet, it is known enough that the name can be pronounced. I have always loved the [name]Ash[/name]- names, but, they were common at one point. I still like them.

I like Ashlinn [name]Marie[/name]
