Finding a Middle Ground

Hello, all! My husband and I just started trying for baby #2. We knew we were having a girl when we discussed baby names the first time around, so I had no idea what to expect about his taste in boys’ name. But he has voiced strong opinions over the years–no surnames, word names, “made up” names, etc–so I thought we would mesh well since I prefer familiar names that range from common to unusual (in the US):
[name_u]Jude[/name_u]
[name_m]Calvin[/name_m]
[name_m]Magnus[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m]
[name_m]Henry[/name_m]
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m]

I was not prepared for when he handed me his list: [name_m]Brom[/name_m], [name_m]Theron[/name_m], [name_u]Brennan[/name_u], and [name_u]Ainsley[/name_u] (he wasn’t aware this was mostly used for girls in the US). It should also be noted our 3 year is named [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], so while [name_u]Brennan[/name_u] might be the most mainstream, it’s very similar to our daughter’s name, though I don’t care for it regardless.

[name_f]Brynn[/name_f] came from his list, so our second child’s name will probably come from mine–but I would like to find a name we both love (or at the very least, like well enough) even though our styles seem very different. Any name suggestions you think bridge the gap?

If all else fails, we pull the first name from one list and the middle from the other. I realize we have awhile to brainstorm, but I’d love some outside perspectives. Thanks!

I love the name [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] - my 3rd son’s name - but I don’t think it flows that well with [name_f]Brynn[/name_f]. From your list I like [name_m]Henry[/name_m] most with [name_f]Brynn[/name_f]. From your husband’s list I can see [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] & [name_m]Theron[/name_m], but also [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] and [name_u]Brennan[/name_u]. I in general do not think similar names for siblings are that much of a burden - I myself seriously considered naming my 5th [name_m]Edward[/name_m] while my 4th is [name_m]Edmund[/name_m]. I also know twins named [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] and [name_m]Casper[/name_m], and it really doesn’t bother me much. So I think [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] and [name_u]Brennan[/name_u] could definitely work if that’s the name you like most.

Other ideas…
[name_m]Troy[/name_m]
[name_m]Ryder[/name_m]
[name_u]Royce[/name_u]
[name_u]Cody[/name_u]

Thank you! My inner namenerd had to give up the plan for a well coordinated sibset when we kept a naming tradition for our daughter, whose name I love but it’s not my personal style, so I’m completely game for [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] and [name_m]Hugo[/name_m].

I’m intrigued by your suggestion of [name_u]Royce[/name_u]. And your comment about possible brothers [name_m]Edward[/name_m] and [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] made me smile! My grandma’s brothers were [name_m]Edward[/name_m], [name_m]Edmund[/name_m], [name_m]Edwin[/name_m], [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] and [name_m]Elmer[/name_m].

First, I want to applaud you for your daughter’s name. [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is absolutely gorgeous!

I have quite a few suggestions for you and your husband. I think it would be nice to have a name that ties to [name_f]Brynn[/name_f], and I think you still have plenty of options for making a coordinated sibset
One of my favourite ways to tie names together is through meaning. [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] means hill, so here are some suggestions with similar “hill” meanings:
[name_u]Brayden[/name_u]
[name_m]Brendan[/name_m]
Cowan
[name_m]Knox[/name_m]
[name_u]Linden[/name_u]
[name_u]Sheldon[/name_u]
Tavin
[name_m]Torin[/name_m]

[name_u]Brayden[/name_u] and [name_m]Brendan[/name_m] are similar to [name_u]Brennan[/name_u], so your husband might like those choices. Tavin and [name_m]Torin[/name_m] are also similar to [name_m]Theron[/name_m].

Next, I found some names that are similar to [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] in popularity in the US. You mentioned that you want names that are familiar, and I think most of these names fit the bill. Not too popular, but heard often enough that it doesn’t cause confusion.
[name_m]Archer[/name_m]
[name_m]Clayton[/name_m]
[name_m]Griffin[/name_m]
[name_u]Reid[/name_u]
[name_m]Holden[/name_m]
[name_m]Gage[/name_m]
[name_m]Nash[/name_m]

[name_u]Reid[/name_u], [name_m]Gage[/name_m], and [name_m]Nash[/name_m] are all one-syllable names like [name_f]Brynn[/name_f], but they don’t share the same sounds which will prevent any mix-ups.

I know you were looking for boy name suggestions, but I think that if your husband can see the name on a girl as well, [name_u]Ainsley[/name_u] would make a great sister name for [name_f]Brynn[/name_f].

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps!

As soon as I read your list then his, [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_u]Ainsley[/name_u] popped out at me!
