Fine Line Between Adorable and Weird

I often study the [name_f]England[/name_f] + [name_m]Wales[/name_m] top 1000 lists to compile lists of my favourites, and I have come across some very odd names LOL. I like some, but I’m not sure if they’re adorable or weird? What do you think? BTW these are ALL girls names.

the numbers beside them are their rankings in 2012.

I have a friend name [name_f]Mariyah[/name_f] and I think that is the muslim version of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] (I may be wrong but it is something along those lines)…
I also know an [name_f]Ameera[/name_f] of [name_f]Indian[/name_f] descent
[name_m]Beau[/name_m] as a girl name?
Esmée (original female spelling) is in the 200s in popularity so it makes sense the english spelling of [name_f]Esmae[/name_f] would be there. Esmée is a really popular name in other parts of Europe.

Seeing [name_f]Princess[/name_f] on the list makes me more empathetic to the British supermodel [name_u]Jordan[/name_u] naming her daughter [name_f]Princess[/name_f]… I still think many bad things about this name, but at least it is a common name in her country. I think [name_f]Precious[/name_f] is along the same lines as [name_f]Princess[/name_f] for me.
[name_f]Blossom[/name_f] also deserves honorable mention as I do still think of the Powerpuff Girl.

I’ve also met an [name_u]Ocean[/name_u] before

I actually like [name_m]Beau[/name_m] for a boy and love [name_m]Bo[/name_m] for a girl. [name_f]Kinda[/name_f] a guilty pleasure name for me!
I like [name_u]Georgie[/name_u], [name_f]Lilah[/name_f], [name_f]Coco[/name_f] (GP), [name_u]Harley[/name_u], [name_f]Harlow[/name_f], [name_u]Indiana[/name_u], [name_u]Remi[/name_u], [name_u]Romy[/name_u]

[name_m]Beau[/name_m] is actually more common for girls than boys there! I actually want to give the members of the [name_f]Pink[/name_f] [name_m]Beau[/name_m] team a lesson in [name_m]French[/name_m] so they realise they’re naming their daughter a man’s name, and the name they’re searching for is [name_f]Belle[/name_f]. I’m torn on [name_f]Blossom[/name_f], I want to love it, but can’t. [name_f]Oceana[/name_f] or [name_f]Oceane[/name_f] or [name_f]Oceania[/name_f] I like, [name_u]Ocean[/name_u] I don’t. It’s also so hard to tell if they’re kreeativ spellings or actual cultural ones tbh!

[name_m]Bo[/name_m] is fine for a girl, could easily be a short form, but the masculine [name_m]French[/name_m] name, I have to say I draw the line at that one! To be honest, I don’t know how I feel with a lot of these, but the Jorgie, [name_f]Jorja[/name_f] and Maariyah spellings…what on earth, it took me days to realise Maariyah is a creative [name_f]Maria[/name_f]/[name_f]Mariah[/name_f] spelling.

These are all listed as their own name, for the most part, the full name/original name ranked significantly higher. As for misspellings and pronunciations;

I believe [name_f]Mariyah[/name_f] can be either [name_f]Maria[/name_f] or [name_f]Mariah[/name_f].
[name_f]Jorja[/name_f]/Jorgie - [name_f]Georgia[/name_f]/[name_u]Georgie[/name_u] (no H’s, just parent’s being kreeativ)
[name_f]Alicja[/name_f] - there are countless variations of [name_f]Alisha[/name_f]/[name_f]Alicia[/name_f] in the UK top 1000, I’d need a new post just to name them all!

I hear you on that one… I love the name [name_m]Beau[/name_m] but for a boy. I totally agree that they are looking for [name_f]Belle[/name_f].

I googled [name_f]Mariyah[/name_f] and it is the name of the concubine of a muslim prophet.

[name_f]Divine[/name_f] doesn’t bother me that much as it reminds me of [name_f]Destiny[/name_f] which is a fairly common enough name ([name_f]Destiny[/name_f] is even [name_f]Miley[/name_f] [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m]’ birth name).

[name_f]Blossom[/name_f] I really could support as a middle name. I heard some weird names growing up (like Qu’3zi@h… a creative spelling of [name_f]Kezia[/name_f]) and honestly what mattered to me more is how well the person wore the name. I think [name_f]Blossom[/name_f] is miles ahead of [name_f]Princess[/name_f] and [name_f]Precious[/name_f], it at least relates to a flower. They also apparently had a sitcom in the 90s where the title character was names [name_f]Blossom[/name_f]. Everyone has that one name they love but are not sure if it would play off on a real child.

I love [name_f]Arissa[/name_f]

[name_f]Divine[/name_f] I think I’m slightly ok with because I know a [name_f]Daveena[/name_f] (although I don’t like her…). I sadly can’t use [name_m]Beau[/name_m], as my cousin took it about 23 years ago for her son, and…long story short, he’s not someone you’d want your son sharing a name with. [name_f]Blossom[/name_f] is like [name_f]Snowdrop[/name_f] or [name_f]Bluebell[/name_f] for me. Not an excellent first name choice, but a gorgeous, cute, and wonderful nickname!

[name_f]Precious[/name_f] and [name_f]Princess[/name_f] though…entirely different story. To me, that’d be like naming your child [name_m]Tripp[/name_m] or Fall. (Yes, I know a girl who was named [name_f]Autumn[/name_f], then somewhere her name became legally changed to Fall)

I like [name_f]Sapphire[/name_f], [name_f]Lilah[/name_f], [name_u]Ocean[/name_u] (though I would love [name_f]Oceana[/name_f] more), [name_f]Harlow[/name_f], [name_u]Romy[/name_u] and [name_u]Indiana[/name_u]. The rest are really not my style. (trendy, nicknamey, made-up)

There are lots of Arabic and Polish speakers in [name_f]England[/name_f], and some of the names on your list are spellings in these languages. [name_f]Alicja[/name_f], [name_f]Zuzanna[/name_f], [name_f]Ameera[/name_f] to mention a few.

I think some are weird ([name_m]Beau[/name_m] and [name_u]Ronnie[/name_u]), some are cute ([name_f]Coco[/name_f]. [name_u]Romy[/name_u], [name_f]Blossom[/name_f], [name_f]Peggy[/name_f], etc), some I don’t really get why you included ([name_f]Emmanuelle[/name_f], [name_f]Alba[/name_f], [name_f]Frances[/name_f], [name_f]Saffron[/name_f]) and some horribly tacky ([name_f]Princess[/name_f], [name_f]Divine[/name_f]).

The only ones that are weird are [name_u]Ocean[/name_u] and [name_u]Indiana[/name_u]. [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] is such a boring, dull state and I don’t have a good connotation with it. [name_u]Ocean[/name_u] is just weird, but to each their own.

Not all are weird to me. It’s quite usual to find Muslim or Eastern European names in our charts as they’re big ethnic groups here. It’s no different to seeing [name_m]Juan[/name_m] or [name_m]Miguel[/name_m] in the US charts. [name_f]Peggy[/name_f], [name_u]Frankie[/name_u], [name_u]Georgie[/name_u] and their ilk aren’t that odd as nicknames are really popular. There’s always going to be a few naming their kids after celebrities ([name_m]Emeli[/name_m], Tulisa) or trying to be kr8yv with already popular names ([name_f]Mazie[/name_f]), just as there will be in other countries. It depends on location too I think. People find [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] weird, but I don’t. There were two in my class at school… but then I do live in the home of the saffron cake :stuck_out_tongue:

I find [name_u]Harley[/name_u] weird on a girl as it’s a trendy top 100 name for boys. [name_f]Harlow[/name_f] is also a bit odd. Perhaps people like the sound but it just reminds me of the chavvy town in [name_m]Essex[/name_m]. And I find [name_f]Skyla[/name_f], [name_f]Shayla[/name_f] and [name_f]Indianna[/name_f] very American. [name_f]Tayla[/name_f] is another odd one. I presume it’s an alternate spelling of [name_u]Taylor[/name_u]??? but it seems inspired by an accent- just like how the American Masyn doesn’t sound like [name_u]Mason[/name_u] in an English accent.

There are always going to be weird ones further down the list. Once you get past the 400 mark-ish, names are only given to 100 babies which is a tiny percentage of the 750,000-odd births per year.

I included them because I wanted to know what people thought of them, because they are in fact different/unusual, especially where I’m from. I happen to love [name_f]Alba[/name_f] and [name_f]Saffron[/name_f]. I also never said they weren’t or that I had issues with them, I just took anything that was different, (and a few tacky ones), or ones I couldn’t make up my mind on whether it was nice or not.

The only one I find to be adorable (and not weird) are:

[name_f]Zuzanna[/name_f] (love this Polish version of [name_f]Susanna[/name_f]!)
[name_u]Georgie[/name_u] (only as a nn or something longer, like [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f], [name_f]Georgina[/name_f], or [name_f]Georgia[/name_f])
[name_f]Esmae[/name_f] (spelled Esmée only, though–I’m very picky about Esmée!)
[name_f]Alba[/name_f] (not really my favorite, but I do like it a lot and would be very happy to meet a little [name_f]Alba[/name_f]!)
[name_f]Frances[/name_f] (not to my taste at all, but I can appreciate its legitimacy and history)
[name_f]Wren[/name_f]
