I’m having a little boy in [name_f]May[/name_f]. So far our top name is [name_u]Finlay[/name_u]. We have son named [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u] [name_m]Henry[/name_m].
The only thing holding us back is that I hear that [name_u]Finlay[/name_u] is used more for girls now. Is this true? I’m ok with it truly being a unisex name, it seems to be a historically male name. Thanks for your input
Yes, in the U.S. [name_u]Finley[/name_u] is more popular for girls, but it’s still not unheard of on boys either. Great choice for a boy [name_f]IMO[/name_f], and help keep this one on the blue side by not bowing out of using it.
[name_u]Finlay[/name_u] is a man’s name. The only place [name_u]Finley[/name_u] is more popular for girls is in the US, because we’re weird like that. I just took a look at the 2014 stats, when 1498 girls and 829 boys were named [name_u]Finley[/name_u]. (I’m sure the numbers look different when you factor in all alternate spellings.) I don’t have the 2015 stats on my computer, but it’s important to note that [name_u]Finley[/name_u] rose for girls AND boys in 2015. This name has not “gone girl” yet, and it won’t until parents of boys stop using it.
[name_u]Finlay[/name_u] is still a more masculine unisex name I think, however out for your list [name_m]Cormac[/name_m] is my favourite.
I also prefer [name_m]Cormac[/name_m] because if you have a [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u] and a [name_u]Finlay[/name_u] (or [name_u]Finn[/name_u]), I think this gives off pretty strong [name_m]Tom[/name_m] [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u] and [name_m]Huckleberry[/name_m] [name_u]Finn[/name_u] vibes… though maybe you find that cute?
Personally I like [name_u]Finlay[/name_u] for a boy and I think it goes well with [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u] (which is also very much a unisex name). I’ve only ever known girls with the [name_u]Finley[/name_u] spelling. Of course [name_u]Finn[/name_u] is an excellent nickname for [name_u]Finlay[/name_u] I have only ever heard boys use.
