Finley...

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] all!

We’re expecting our first baby next Feb and are pretty set on [name_u]Finley[/name_u] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] if bubba is a boy but I’m a bit put off by it being considered a girl’s name now. I hope I don’t offend anyone (as boy or girl you can rock any name you want) but I’d rather a strong, masculine name for our son especially against [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]. All girl/sister names we like for possible use in the future are all very feminine sounding, too so I think it’d sound off to have a unisex name for our son. What do you think… Strictly male or more unisex now?

We’re set on [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] being in the middle spot rather than first, too as we like other names containing “or” for possible future little sisters otherwise we’d swap them around. Sadly, [name_u]Theo[/name_u]/[name_u]Finn[/name_u]/[name_u]Flynn[/name_u] wouldn’t work as stand alone firsts with our surname either. The only other option we’ve come up with is [name_m]Finnian[/name_m] [name_u]Theo[/name_u] but not sure on the ‘flow’. Any opinions on that combo too please? Thank you!

It is used for girls now too some but it’s all masculine to me, and if I saw [name_u]Finley[/name_u] on a roster I’d assume it was a boy. Any [name_u]Finn[/name_u] name screams boy to me and I hate the use of boy names for girls just cuz they have the “ley” ending. Its not at all a feminine name.

Side note-I had 2 rats named [name_u]Finley[/name_u] “[name_m]Fin[/name_m]” and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] “[name_u]Theo[/name_u]” so obviously I love both names and I love them together

I would still assume [name_u]Finley[/name_u] was a boy. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though it’s used for girls, I still find it a masculine name for a boy. I really like [name_u]Finley[/name_u] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]. If you are definitely not using [name_u]Finley[/name_u], I like [name_m]Finnian[/name_m] [name_u]Theo[/name_u] as well.

What about [name_m]Finnick[/name_m] [name_u]Theo[/name_u]?

Yeah, I completely agree. Maybe I’m a hypocrite as I do think some work (I know an adorable little girl called Sydney, for example) but I do automatically find myself thinking “did you want a boy?” even though I hate myself for it! I guess now that James is quite a popular pick for girls, it’ll soon become rare to find a name considered completely masculine. We would just swap and have Theodore for the first but Eleanor is high up on our girl’s list and I’ve just discovered Aurora on here, too which is beautiful (never considered that before!) so our children would be a bit “or” heavy lol.

Haha! Love that you had rats named Finley and Theodore.

I would assume [name_u]Finley[/name_u] was a boy. Since it’s your first choice, I say go with it. I also like [name_m]Finnian[/name_m] (also [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m]). I like [name_m]Finnian[/name_m] [name_u]Theo[/name_u] but I think I prefer [name_m]Finnian[/name_m] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m].

[name_m]Finnick[/name_m] is super cute and flows better with [name_u]Theo[/name_u], too - Thanks! I’ll see what OH thinks as he wasn’t 100% on names like [name_m]Edward[/name_m], [name_m]Jasper[/name_m], [name_u]Emmett[/name_u], Esmée and [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f] because they’ve been made more popular due to the films/books they’re used in and [name_m]Finnick[/name_m] is a character from Hunger Games, right? I’ve just seen [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] on here too, for a girl, but that might be too Disney for him lol

Thank you! I’m not 100% on the flow of [name_m]Finnian[/name_m] [name_u]Theo[/name_u] yet especially with our last name which is short and only one syllable but it still keeps coming up with [name_m]Finnian[/name_m] [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]. We’ll keep pondering lol

Thanks! Yeah, same but you do think [name_m]Finnian[/name_m] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] is a bit much both being 3 syllables? Sticking with [name_u]Finley[/name_u] is probably top option right now then [name_m]Finnian[/name_m] [name_u]Theo[/name_u] or [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]. OH doesn’t like [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m]… Says it reminds him of a pub :joy:

I hate when this happens! [name_u]Finley[/name_u] is all boy to me. However, I just had a little girl cousin born that they named [name_u]Finley[/name_u]. I say use it if you love it. I do like the options of [name_m]Finnick[/name_m] or [name_m]Finnian[/name_m] as well.

[name_f]Glad[/name_f] you like it! Yes, I guess there was a [name_m]Finnick[/name_m] in Hunger Games, but I know a little [name_m]Finnick[/name_m] who goes by Finny (almost 2, i guess its gonna change to [name_u]Finn[/name_u])!
I think its not gonna get very popular because of [name_u]Finley[/name_u]! I like [name_u]Finley[/name_u] as well, but I prefer [name_m]Finnick[/name_m]!

Good [name_m]Luck[/name_m]!

[name_u]Finley[/name_u] is at #189 for girls and #287 for boys. This is still very much a unisex name, and it’s one that’s predominantly masculine outside of the US as well.

[name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]? [name_m]Phineas[/name_m] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]?

My first impression of [name_u]Finley[/name_u] is still boy. I like [name_m]Finnian[/name_m] [name_u]Theo[/name_u] as well.

Despite the fact that the only [name_u]Finley[/name_u] I know is a female, I would assume boy as well. You could always spell it [name_u]Finlay[/name_u] which is more used on males than females. I think [name_u]Finley[/name_u] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] is very handsome!

[name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]
Finnery [name_u]Theo[/name_u]

I’d assume [name_u]Finley[/name_u] is a boy’s name, though I do think it depends where you live. I don’t think the boys names on girls trend is so big in the UK for example

I thought the [name_u]Finlay[/name_u] thing would help too but just doing a general search, I’ve found more female Finlays than [name_u]Finley[/name_u] :disappointed:

I think it’s more widely used on girls in the US - well, BNOG in general but it still seems to be quite widely used on girls here too. So annoying :disappointed: I just wouldn’t want my son to feel like he has a “girl’s name”

Thank you, I keep seeing lovely comments like this and put [name_u]Finley[/name_u] back on the table but I’m still in two minds :disappointed: Naming a human is hard! Lol.

Indeed. There’s no worse fate for a man than sharing his name with women.

Nameberry said [name_u]Finley[/name_u] is being used twice as much for girls nowadays, which makes me annoyed . We had it on our list for boys and eliminated it from the list because of the recent girl popularity. I don’t see it at all for a girls name, personally. I think you have an awesome name for your son though statistically it seems you might run into a girl [name_u]Finley[/name_u] or two.

This has happened to a lot of my favorites over the years ([name_u]Finley[/name_u], [name_u]Ryan[/name_u], etc.) so I feel your pain.
