Finnegan and Fiona?

We have a son named [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] and are planning to have a second child. My husband and both our families have fallen in love with the name [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] (if we have a girl). I do love the name but I think it’s a little silly to have the male and female version of the same name.
Wondering what other people think.

They do both have a very similar meaning and close regional origins. While I can see that being irksome, ultimately in day-to-day life most people won’t know the meanings are so similar. If it were more direct, masculine/feminine forms of the same name, I would say no (like [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] and [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f], etc.) But I think in look and sound these are distinct enough that you can get away with it. Especially since you really love the name.

If it ends up bugging you too much, you could use [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] in the middle. It would make for a sweet connection to her brother’s name without the feeling that they’ve been given the same moniker.

But I stress again, in this case, I think they can work together as first names.

I think [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] and [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] sound great together! They have some similar sounds, but ultimately they are distinctive enough from each other to sound like siblings without being too matchy. I doubt many, if any, people will notice that they are forms of the same name.

I’m not a fan. [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] and [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] sound fine, but if he were to choose to go by [name_u]Finn[/name_u] in the future, the most obvious [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] nickname, I think they’d be too close. That said I like the suggestion of using it as a middle name!

I think they are too close for siblings. If u have more kids, the next will be the odd one out. Maybe as a middle?

I didn’t know they had the same meaning until you mentioned it and I think that most other people wouldn’t know either. They are definitely different enough to use together! I like them both a lot!
