Fiona or Lucy as a sister for Isla? Or something else?

I posted awhile back about naming our second daughter, sister to [name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_f]Belle[/name_f]. She will have a long hyphenated last name, so shorter names are what we are looking for here. We obviously love [name_f]Isla[/name_f]'s name, we landed on it pretty instantly, and her first and middle hold a personal significance to us. We are having a hard time finding a short, sweet, feminine name that we love as much as [name_f]Isla[/name_f]'s and is somewhat special to us.

From some suggestions from you all and my own initial gut reaction, I thought we would probably land on [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is my middle name and I thought it would make a great first name, but my husband can’t get on board with that. Though I’m afraid it is overused as a middle, I do think it sounds lovely with [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] and apparently I told all my girlfriends that would be my next child’s name if it was a girl (I might have been a little tipsy, don’t remember, but there are hashtags).

However, 3 year old [name_f]Isla[/name_f] keeps bringing up [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. This is the only real name she has suggested and I have no idea where she is getting it from (no friends, characters in any of her books or shows have this name). The other day I asked her jokingly what was making my tummy so big and she said, “[name_f]Lucy[/name_f].” I like it, my husband likes it, so now we’re thinking, should we go with [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] instead? It would be very sweet that her big sister had such a big part in naming her.

But then I don’t know if [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] goes as well with [name_f]Isla[/name_f] as [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]? Or if I like it as much? But I do like it? Or if there is some other great name we are overlooking (though I guarantee you my husband has shot them all down).

Thoughts?

Well, I really like the name [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. I think it is very cute how your daughter chose it!
However here are some names you may also consider, [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and…

.[name_f]Amy[/name_f]
.[name_f]Orla[/name_f]
.[name_f]Paige[/name_f]
.[name_f]Tara[/name_f]
.[name_f]Ava[/name_f]
.[name_f]Cara[/name_f]
.[name_f]Emma[/name_f]
.[name_f]Hanna[/name_f]
.[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
.[name_f]Jenna[/name_f]
.[name_f]Eve[/name_f]
.[name_f]Lily[/name_f]
.[name_f]Molly[/name_f]
.[name_f]Lola[/name_f]
.[name_f]Zara[/name_f]

I’m sure you will choose a lovely name. Good luck!

I don’t think you can go wrong with either [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] or [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]! Both go well with [name_f]Isla[/name_f], [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. Maybe use [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] for this daughter, and [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] if you ever have another?

A few other suggestions off the top of my head: [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_f]Cora[/name_f], [name_f]Gemma[/name_f], [name_f]Ada[/name_f], [name_f]Eve[/name_f]/[name_f]Eva[/name_f], [name_f]Faye[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]

Thanks for the suggestions.

I suggested [name_f]Clara[/name_f] and [name_f]Eve[/name_f], but they were both vetoed. We already have a [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], and [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] in our family/friend circle, so those are no-gos even though they are all adorable. We had [name_f]Cora[/name_f] in the running for a little while, but ultimately ruled that we liked [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] (and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]) better.

[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] sounds better than [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] to me- not a fan of both ending in “a”.

I love [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] and like [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] better with [name_f]Isla[/name_f]. [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is cute and it is adorable that your daughter chose it:-) I don’t think it is quite as nice of a fit with [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and I personally like [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] better, but [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] & [name_f]Isla[/name_f] are just fine together. It would be special that her sister chose her name. I know sisters [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] & [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] those two names together. One means island and the other from the forest or woodland. I am biased bc [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is my top choice for a girl right now but I think it goes great.

I think [name_f]Rose[/name_f] would be just perfect! Too bad that was vetoed! I think both [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] go well with [name_f]Isla[/name_f], [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] maybe just a little better. What do you think of [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]? [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] and [name_f]Isla[/name_f] is to die for! Suggestions:

[name_u]Eden[/name_u]
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_f]Esme[/name_f]
[name_f]Maisie[/name_f]
[name_u]Eloise[/name_u]
[name_f]Freya[/name_f]
[name_f]Elowen[/name_f]
[name_f]Vera[/name_f]
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
[name_f]Thea[/name_f]
[name_u]Waverly[/name_u]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f]
[name_f]Veda[/name_f]
[name_u]Landry[/name_u]
[name_f]Alma[/name_f]
[name_f]Zoey[/name_f]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f]
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u]
[name_f]Nora[/name_f]
[name_f]Astrid[/name_f]
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f]

Thoughts on these? Good luck!

Both are pretty. [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] feel very modern and current. [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] feel more exotic. Either one is a great choice. [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] would be my choice.

I definitely vote for [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] as siblings. I have an [name_f]Isla[/name_f] too, love her name.

I second @maurab’s suggestion of [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] and katiem333’s suggestion of [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] and [name_f]Nora[/name_f].

I will suggest [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], I think that [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] goes lovely with [name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_f]Belle[/name_f]. And I am so sorry that your hubby vetoed [name_f]Rose[/name_f], it is truly lovely (it’s on my top contenders too) and would fit great with [name_f]Isla[/name_f].

Good luck!

You guys are making me so sad that DH vetoed [name_f]Rose[/name_f]! I just told him that a couple of you said how great it is and he is going to reconsider  One of the issues we had with [name_f]Rose[/name_f] was finding a middle name that sounded great with it and not like it would be better switched around (with [name_f]Rose[/name_f] as the middle).

Seems pretty split on [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]! I read the suggestions aloud and DH forgot he liked [name_f]Cora[/name_f], but I think I like [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] better. I really like [name_f]Lydia[/name_f]; he said nothing. I like [name_f]Etta[/name_f] too but not how it sounds with [name_f]Isla[/name_f]. [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is too close to [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] and we don’t have a great connotation of that name, if that makes sense.

All the suggestions are very helpful though!

I really like [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] with [name_f]Isla[/name_f]. Here are some others

[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]
[name_f]Gemma[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f]
[name_f]Carys[/name_f]
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]
[name_f]Riona[/name_f]
[name_f]Olive[/name_f]
[name_f]Melody[/name_f]
[name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f]
[name_f]Giada[/name_f]
[name_f]Bridget[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Stella[/name_f]
[name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]
[name_f]Jolie[/name_f]
[name_f]Zoe[/name_f]
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f]
[name_f]Athena[/name_f]
[name_f]Claudia[/name_f]
[name_f]Olympia[/name_f]
[name_f]Anya[/name_f]
[name_f]Maya[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsbeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Layla[/name_f]
[name_f]Portia[/name_f]
[name_f]Corrine[/name_f]

I think [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] and [name_f]Isla[/name_f] are a little too close to me, but [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] sounds great!

[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]! Totally!

P.S. [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_f]Belle[/name_f]!

I like [name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]. It would be a four letter first name and a five letter middle name like [name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_f]Belle[/name_f]. I dislike [name_f]Lucy[/name_f].

What about [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] for short?
Not the biggest fan of [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], makes me think of Shrek.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] more, but it is adorable that your daughter picked [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is a sweet sibset!

Your dilemma got me to actually join the Nameberry community after being a “voyeur” for several years!
I only had two children and my youngest is 31 but, there were SO MANY lovely names out there that all the family cats for three decades have borne people names I loved but never got to use. One of them was [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] - a lovely tabby who lived 18 years!
That being said- there’s IS something that feels very important to me about your [name_f]Isla[/name_f] feeling so sure that “[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]” is already with her on some level.
[name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_f]Belle[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] feel like a pair of sisters who were meant to be together.
I love names - and feel deeply connected to those I have chosen so I really get that this is a decision that will be with you forever! It’s my humble opinion that between [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] you really can’t go wrong! Best of luck!

[name_f]Fiona[/name_f] is a great choice for several reasons -

  • [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] is a great name; timeless, elegant, but adorable for a little girl
  • [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] sounds beautifully poetic but still flows well
  • [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] both end in -a so they share an ending but still are different names
  • [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] are both Scottish names which is a lovely touch

I feel that [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is slightly “nothingy”, especially compared with [name_f]Isla[/name_f].

They are both great fits. I’ve always liked the idea of [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] for sisters, though [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] do sound super cute together. I don’t have a problem with [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] being too similar at all though.

You guys are all great, and I’m definitely going to read all these responses to my husband tonight.

@millyby - I actually love [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] and then [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] for short, but the different pronunciations kind of throw me off, especially since we have to correct people on [name_f]Isla[/name_f]'s name so much in our midwestern town.

@mgk - Ha, love that I inspired you to join after years! I just reread your response and got chills when you mention how [name_f]Isla[/name_f] feels that “[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]” is already with her on some level. That is definitely something not to overlook.

I’m still not sure where to go from here; I’m debating just bringing both names (and maybe [name_f]Rose[/name_f] too, if I can swing it) to the hospital and just see what happens. That is so not me but I feel pretty confident in both names now so thank you all for that!
