Fiona = Shrek ?!?!?!?!

Real Talk:

Is [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] “tainted” because of Shrek??
Does anyone think it’s ruined because of the ogre??

Please be honest!

I was in the prime age group for the Shrek series growing up, so for me yes the name is tainted.

No it’s not tainted at all. That’s not a huge memorable movie and the movie is way past it’s prime.

I think the Shrek movies are pretty much out of the pop culture mainstream at this point.

Not at all. [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] is beautiful!

I honestly don’t think of Shrek at all when I hear the name [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] (besides you mentioning it here!).

Not at all. This name is absolutely beautiful. [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] from shrek is also a good character, despite being an ogre, so to me, it’s not really a bad connotation.

But also no, I don’t associate the name [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] with shrek movie.

I was a little kid when the first Shrek movie came out and still watch the movie even as an adult, so my mind does draw the association. However, I’d hardly say the name is tainted because of [name_f]Princess[/name_f] [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]. Conflicted yet strong female lead? Could be worse things to share an association with  and I’m not sure how relevant an 18-year-old movie would be for the peers of a [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] born these days.

That said, I think that the association would be less strong if there were several other pop culture [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]'s in the pool. I guess there is the girl on Shameless, but that’s a bit iffy.

Yes, totally. Sorry.

Depends on where you live I think. In the UK Fiona has been a fairly common name since about the 1970s and there are number of famous Fionas here so in my view it hasn’t been tainted.

But if you live in another country where the name was unknown before Shrek, then maybe it is synonymous with Shrek.

I wouldn’t say it’s tainted, but it’s definitely the first thing I think of.

For me, Shrek is the only association I have. So [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] is as much Shrek/ogre to me as Shrek is. Sorry.

Shrek is definitely the first thing I think of, but I don’t think [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] is unusable.

No! I love [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], it’s a top contender for baby #3 (should we have a 3rd) and I’ve been trying to convince my husband of the same thing.

Thank you, everyone! Your responses are as split as me and my husband. About 50/50 yes and no.

I was so desperately to get on board but Shrek is all I can think of.

You have excellent points: this generation might not associate it as much as I do… And she is a great character.

And you are right that if more pop culture characters were named [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], it would dilute the association. When DH and I were mulling it over at first, it was several weeks before I remembered, “oh yeah, there was a singer named [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_f]Apple[/name_f]!” My brain forgot any other association.

Like others have said I was in the prime age group for Shrek when it came out, so I do make the association when I hear the name [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]. However, I still think it is a beautiful and totally usable name, and for those like me who do think of Shrek I think it will be an overwhelmingly positive association.

That said, I suspect I am part of a certain demographic group that would most strongly associate it. Kids born now are almost two decades past the original movie, so it won’t mean much to them. And depending on what your demographics of friends are many parents would have been too old for Shrek when it came out. Essentially I think Shrek is a cultural touchstone for those born in the 90s, but probably hardly anyone else.

I was also the prime age for Shrek, but living in the UK I already knew several Fionas before the film came out, so despite really loving Shrek the name has never been massively associated for me.

Yes, Shrek is the first thing that comes to mind, but I don’t see it as bad. It depends how sensitive you are. You are going to get an ogre comment. If you’re the type that’s going to cry over it, it’s not the name for you. If you can smile and say yeah, we like that movie and move on, then it’s totally useable. My son shares a name with a red nose reindeer, and we get comments. I totally embrace it- we did his nursery like the [name_u]North[/name_u] Pole and he was a reindeer for Halloween. It’s all about your confidence in the name. I think it’s worth saying that [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] was ranked 181 in 2017. It’s not super common and I’m sure the Shrek association deterred some people from using it…but it’s in the top 200, above [name_u]Eloise[/name_u], [name_f]Adaline[/name_f] and [name_u]Payton[/name_u]. People are clearly using it. Shrek is close to 20 years old, I would much prefer to see [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] used than another [name_f]Elsa[/name_f].

When i hear [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], i think of the little girl from Nurse [name_u]Jackie[/name_u] and a girl i went to school with. I watched Shrek when i was younger but i don’t really associate the name with it. And that being said, [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] was a decent character in the film, it’s not like she’s cruella de vil
