found this site via the guardian- am an avid reader of the british telegraph birth announcements but this (in terms of exciting choices) seems even more fruitful a place
we’re expecting a daughter and have found ourselves at a bit of a stalemate.
our boys are [name]Caius[/name] and [name]Otto[/name].
My partner’s choice for a daughter is either [name]Polly[/name] or [name]Estelle[/name]. I’m not sold on either.
First pregnancy we picked out [name]Romy[/name] for a girl but now I’m not 100% on it.
Looking for something a little offbeat- whilst I like both, [name]Polly[/name]/[name]Estelle[/name] are a little cutesy for me.
I love [name]Sorcha[/name] (more anglicised version of [name]Saoirse[/name]), but really any suggestions would be great!
[name]How[/name] about [name]Elodie[/name], [name]Dahlia[/name], [name]Ophelia[/name], [name]Eloise[/name], [name]Isla[/name], [name]Christabel[/name], or [name]Isadora[/name]?
I should have been a bit clearer- [name]Sorcha[/name] isn’t actually an Anglicised derivation of [name]Saoirse[/name], it’s just easier to pronounce. It’s a separate name, also Gaelic, prn Sor-ka.
I have just seen how often people mispronounce [name]Saoirse[/name] as Sor-sha.
I love [name]Isla[/name] and [name]Cora[/name] ([name]LOVE[/name]) but both are just so popular!
Names we’ve been considering other than [name]Romy[/name] and [name]Sorcha[/name] are (my choices) [name]Minerva[/name], [name]Nola[/name], [name]Pallas[/name] (I adore this name).
Something unusual, but not unpronounceable.
we also both like [name]Sosie[/name] but can’t think of a more formal name for it, plus aren’t sure how it suits our boys’ names!
[name]Just[/name] throwing a couple of extra Gaelic names in the mix…
[name]Clodagh[/name] (nn [name]Chloe[/name]?)
[name]Tullia[/name] (could get nn [name]Tully[/name] which has a similar ring to [name]Polly[/name])
[name]Aisling[/name] (nn [name]Ash[/name]!)
I do like [name]Sorcha[/name], but I prefer [name]Saoirse[/name]
Mmm [name]Minerva[/name] and [name]Pallas[/name] - wonderful names.
[name]Caius[/name] and [name]Otto[/name] are such little ancient emperor names. I think [name]Polly[/name] (oddly) has some of the same stout strength and the Germanness of [name]Otto[/name], but she is too cute as a full name. You definitely need something old and unfrilly.
[name]Sabine[/name]
[name]Augusta[/name]
[name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Claudia[/name]
[name]Doris[/name] - I find this oh so evocative of ancient Greek architecture and sea nymphs, but DH says I just like it because it sounds like the name of someone who might serve me pie. Perhaps it’s a happy medium between [name]Pallas[/name] and [name]Polly[/name]?
Too bad [name]Nike[/name] is completely unusable. Could be great in your sibset.
[name]Astrid[/name]
[name]Tacita[/name] - love this name. “TA-sit-uh” (so mysterious and whispery)
[name]Anthea[/name]
[name]Clio[/name]
[name]How[/name] about [name]Pallas[/name] nicknamed [name]Polly[/name]? Oh yes!
theclocktowerofjoy- I love [name]Ottilie[/name] but I have an [name]Otto[/name] so it would be too much [name]Ott[/name] to trot! I have never considered [name]Sanne[/name] (Sann-ah?) and like the sound of that
lauren-kay- I love all these names but my partner is strongly ambivalent about any names he sees as liable to be mispronounced. I so love [name]Aisling[/name]. I would be on that one in a flash otherwise.
thanks caspar. I love the name, and really love the meaning. I like a girls name with a feisty/lofty meaning!
emmabobemma- You are dead on the mark with my tastes. I want to steer clear of the frill if possible. Not a fan of [name]Astrid[/name], but I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Nike[/name] if not for the brand (and [name]Calypso[/name] if it weren’t for the nigh identical brand Calippo).
I don’t know if I have the guts to use [name]Doris[/name] but I love [name]Sabine[/name], [name]Clio[/name] and especially [name]Tacita[/name].
Slight reservations on the first two- unsure if [name]Clio[/name] sounds a little too…neat? alongside [name]Caius[/name]?
And [name]Sabine[/name] has the slightly discouraging association of the [name]Sabine[/name] women. [name]How[/name] much do you think this should matter?
But [name]Tacita[/name]! I’ve never come across it before- my heart leapt a little. [name]Will[/name] bring it up with my partner tonight
What about [name]Sable[/name], [name]Eulalie[/name], Sosia/[name]Zosia[/name], [name]Zuzanna[/name], [name]Zenobia[/name], [name]Lilou[/name], Lieve (lee-vuh), [name]Liesl[/name], [name]Sybil[/name]/[name]Sybilla[/name], [name]Sybella[/name], or [name]Saskia[/name]?
As for [name]Sosie[/name], you could use [name]Susannah[/name] (and then you could also get [name]Sanne[/name] as a nn!).
Yes, I think you’re right - [name]Clio[/name] might be a little too on-the-nose next to [name]Caius[/name] and [name]Otto[/name] (like a smoosh of the two.)
[name]Sabine[/name] makes me think of the book [name]Griffin[/name] and [name]Sabine[/name], and vaguely of ancient [name]Rome[/name], [name]Romulus[/name] and [name]Remus[/name], etc… I suppose some people might hear it and think “Abduction of the [name]Sabine[/name] Women,” which is not the best association.
[name]Tacita[/name] is a really magical name. I’ve considered it myself, but husband couldn’t get behind its meaning (being a bit of a loudmouth!) Check out the British artist [name]Tacita[/name] [name]Dean[/name]. She’s great.
