Ok. Almost there. We decided on a first name for our baby boy, now we just have to find the right one for his twin sister. And middle names. Maybe not quite finished, but still. We have a shortlist of four names for the girl:
[name_f]My[/name_f] husband REALLY likes [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], and I like the sound too. It’s really a pretty name. But when I was in school there was a girl named [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] who loved to pick on me, and apparently I just can’t get past that. I’m curious what first impressions others have with the name [name_f]Daphne[/name_f]. What about the others? What kind of a girl can you picture those names on?
Thanks for all the help
When I hear [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], I think of the Netflix show Bridgerton and the main character. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite from your list is [name_f]Diana[/name_f], then [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], then [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], and finally [name_f]Frieda[/name_f]. All cute though.
Oooo I love [name_f]Diana[/name_f]! [name_f]My[/name_f] associations with [name_f]Diana[/name_f] are the [name_f]Princess[/name_f] of [name_m]Wales[/name_m] (which is a great association imo) and [name_f]Dianna[/name_f] Agron from Glee (even though she spells it different). When I heard [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], I think of a character from a Netflix series; [name_f]Frida[/name_f] [name_u]Kahlo[/name_u] is my main association for [name_f]Frieda[/name_f]; and with [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], I don’t really have an associations, it’s a cute name.
Daphne - I think of the actress [name_f]Dafne[/name_f] [name_m]Keen[/name_m] from His Dark Materials and Logan … She is pretty badass and this association has increased my love of [name_f]Daphne[/name_f]. I used to think of Scooby Doo, but no longer. I love its sparky energy and connection to nature.
Adelaide - I think of the city of [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] in Australia, which I visit often, as well as a few little girls I know of with this name. I love the sounds in [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], it’s beautiful and strong sounding.
Diana - This is [name_u]Wonder[/name_u] Woman/Anne of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables/Princess [name_f]Di[/name_f] all rolled into one … Quite a diverse mix of first impressions! I’m loving it more and more since the [name_u]Wonder[/name_u] Woman films came out. Elegant and strong.
Frieda - I think of [name_f]Frida[/name_f] [name_u]Kahlo[/name_u], as well as a character from the Netflix show and graphic novel series Hilda … Both great namesakes. Because of this I get artsy, studious and slightly witchy vibes.
[name_f]Dianna[/name_f] is my MIL. She just got her PhD, is super organized, an author and overall very successful. Wish I was more like her!
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] is beautiful. Seems sort of trendy with all the various Addies I know though.
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f] is pretty. I would swoon if I met one in real life. I think of Scooby-Doo and some of the other pop culture references other people have mentioned. Kind of a neutral association for me. But the name itself is lovely.
[name_f]Frieda[/name_f] just doesn’t strike me as a very pretty name. [name_f]Frida[/name_f] [name_u]Kahlo[/name_u] comes to mind and while she was a really amazing person, her life was rather troubled. Kind of gives me sad vibes.
I’m curious what you picked as your boy name as that might sway which of these names I would choose.
I would avoid [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] if it has a bad association for you!
How about [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], or [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] instead?
Impressions:
[name_f]Diana[/name_f] - elegant and dramatic
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] - lacy and old-fashioned
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f] - bold and quirky
[name_f]Frieda[/name_f] - [name_f]Frida[/name_f] [name_u]Kahlo[/name_u], I like it but not as much as the others
Daphne reminds me of spring for some reason. It feels light hearted, jubilant, and fun. To a lesser extent I do assume a [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] would be attractive (probably from watching too much scooby doo as a kid). The more recent Bridgerton reference is also positive in my opinion
Diana - I think of a ~50 year old woman
Adelaide - I picture [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] [name_m]Kane[/name_m]
Frieda - I just think [name_f]Frida[/name_f] [name_u]Kahlo[/name_u]
From your list I like [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] best.
If you have negative associations to [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], I would suggest not using it. And hopefully your husband can understand your reasoning, I would think so at least.
Similar names to [name_f]Daphne[/name_f]:
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_u]Delaney[/name_u]
[name_f]Liberty[/name_f]
[name_f]Delphine[/name_f]
Diana - I think of my friend [name_f]Diana[/name_f] before anyone else, like [name_f]Princess[/name_f] [name_f]Diana[/name_f].
Adelaide - It reminds me of a fancier version of [name_f]Adeline[/name_f], and I think of someone smart for some reason? I don’t know anyone with the name [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]!
Daphne - I think of [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] from Scooby-Doo, and also a girl that was my student. The girl I had in my class was a shy fashionista.
Frieda - I think of [name_f]Frida[/name_f] [name_u]Kahlo[/name_u]. It is not my style but I like it for others. I prefer this spelling to [name_f]Frida[/name_f].
If you can’t get past the [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] association, it’s okay not to use it! It’s a pretty name, but you have a good reason to not want to use it. Though I do not imagine [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] as a bully off the top of my head. I like [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] the most!
Diana - elegant/classic, under-used, [name_f]Princess[/name_f] [name_f]Di[/name_f]
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] - feels kind of heavy to me for some reason, though nickname [name_f]Addie[/name_f] is cute and trendy
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f] - Scooby Doo/60’s, pretty, whimsical
[name_f]Frieda[/name_f] - [name_f]Frida[/name_f] [name_u]Kahlo[/name_u]…how about [name_f]Freya[/name_f]?
All the names listed are nice. I think knowing the name you picked for your son would help. Personally, I would avoid a name I have a bad association with…some things just aren’t meant to be.
I like [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], but I also have no negative association with it. I think there’s some merit to the thought that once you apply a name to your own child the association changes. I will say [name_f]Delphia[/name_f] and [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] are close to [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] and might be a better suit for you guys.
