Hello everyone! As I have mentioned previously, I am looking to change my name. For those who have not seen my other post:
My current name is [name_f]Amy[/name_f], but I have always seen it as not quite right and disconnected from the rest of me. I am starting at a new school next year, giving me the perfect chance to go by something else. The forms are coming in and many of them include the “nickname” field I dread filling out, due to my indecision.
I would prefer to keep A as my first initial. (My last name is a single syllable and starts with Z.)
I want to find a name with a virtuous or poetic meaning. (Connections to science or literature also appeal to me, but that’s not a top priority.) It should be uncommon, but preferably not too difficult to spell or pronounce. I’d also like something that doesn’t sound informal. I’d prefer not to use word or place names, or names that otherwise come up too often in daily life.
For some reason, I don’t like names that start with [name_m]Ab[/name_m]- or end with -aa, -ba, -ma, or -la. It’s a bit of a random list, but it’s a preference of mine. I do especially like names with -ia endings and more than two syllables.
Over the years, I have gathered some favorite names, but none of them are exactly what I need:
[name_f]Aletheia[/name_f] (usually spelled [name_f]Alethea[/name_f]) - This name means “truth” in Greek, and I especially like it because honesty is one of my core virtues. It also reflects a crisis of faith I am going through and the truth I seek. The -ia ending appeals to me as well. My only qualm about it is the sound–it’s clumsy and a bit lispy when I say it. Otherwise it’s more or less perfect, and I’m disappointed that my closest match still isn’t quite right.
[name_f]Cambria[/name_f] - I love the professional sound and the connection to evolutionary science (and again, -ia ending), but it’s too common as a place name and it doesn’t start with A. However, it’s easy to say and spell. There’s also the bonus of using “[name_f]Amy[/name_f]” as a nickname (despite it being a stretch).
[name_f]Avalyn[/name_f] - Meaning “beautiful breath of life”, I like [name_f]Avalyn[/name_f] but feel as if it would be better suited as somebody’s middle name.
With a definite “deadline” looming ahead, I need help choosing a new name in time. For that reason, I turned to Nameberry’s vast body of expertise yet again.
Comments and name suggestions would be vastly appreciated. Thank you all in advance!
