Still a few months off TTC but I am after first name ideas for middles [name_f]Mimosa[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u].
[name_f]My[/name_f] husbands favourite girls name for a couple of years has been [name_f]Mimosa[/name_f] and I have come to like it and enjoy the flower connotations & the fact it was used in Victorian / Edwardian times(didn’t know it was a cocktail-it’s not quite as popular in Australia). It’s also the name of a star in the Southern [name_m]Cross[/name_m].
His favourite Nannas name was [name_f]Jeanette[/name_f] passed away 8 years ago, hence [name_u]Jean[/name_u]. We also like the name of its own merit but its too similar to my husbands name to use as a first! I see it as being colourful, retro and spunky. So exciting that we both really like it!
I like the idea of having a non flower name with some history and maybe a little flair up front. For example DH thinks [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is awfully daggy & [name_f]Thisbe[/name_f] too strange but likes [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] & [name_f]Flo[/name_f](I think he only likes 4 girls names!). Our surname starts with an F and has two syllables and ends with ing, so lets pretend its [name_m]Fielding[/name_m].
First name [name_f]Mimosa[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u] [name_m]Fielding[/name_m]… Go!
Maybe it’s not an Australian thing but I’d stay away from [name_f]Flo[/name_f]…here in the states we have a code word Aunt [name_f]Flo[/name_f] which which means a woman’s monthlies ( but maybe it doesn’t matter in Australia). [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] is lovely. What does daggy mean anyway?
Suggestions to go with [name_f]Mimosa[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u] [name_m]Fielding[/name_m]:
[name_f]Avril[/name_f]
[name_f]Ada[/name_f]
[name_f]Bonnie[/name_f]
[name_f]Briony[/name_f]
[name_f]Leora[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] (like [name_f]Violet[/name_f], but ending in an -a, not the instrument)
[name_u]January[/name_u]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Olive[/name_f]
[name_f]Fern[/name_f]
[name_u]Sage[/name_u]
[name_f]Sienna[/name_f]
[name_f]Thea[/name_f]
[name_f]Holly[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Verity[/name_f]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f]
[name_f]Zelda[/name_f]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f]
I love PP’s suggestions of [name_f]Cleo[/name_f], [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], and [name_f]Annabel[/name_f]. I would add these suggestions:
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f]
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f]
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
[name_f]Augusta[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Camille[/name_f]
[name_f]Zoe[/name_f]
I would never have thought to use [name_f]Mimosa[/name_f] as a name, but it does sound very lovely! I think it could also make a delightful first name, if its true as you say that the cocktail is not popular is Australia. Here in the US, it is universally known and the name wouldn’t be separated from it. I didn’t even know it was a type of flower too!
geeknamezyo - I think you suggestions of simple of short I think it would be a grounding force with [name_f]Mimosa[/name_f]. Here what I think of some…
[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] - [name_u]Love[/name_u] but my good friends named their dog that last year!
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] - sweet and simple
[name_f]Celia[/name_f] - I don’t like the meaning unfortunatley
[name_f]Cleo[/name_f] - cute
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f] - Appreciate the love here and I like this name a lot! However my best friend named her dog this only a few months ago! And if you knew her you’d know her dogs are like her children!!:-o
[name_f]Eira[/name_f] - nice
[name_f]Isobel[/name_f] - love this spelling but too popular with [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] etc.
[name_f]Laurel[/name_f] - demure
[name_f]Thea[/name_f] - strong and feminine
oliviasarah - Thank you for your suggestions and I’m so glad you like [name_f]Mimosa[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u]! Have had a bit much [name_f]Mimosa[/name_f] bashing due to the cocktail to use it as a first name unfortunately. You are spot on with our style though…
[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] - so so pretty, adore the O and ie ending
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] - Was considering this one! Have loved [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] for as long as I can remember
[name_f]Hebe[/name_f] - very cool, love the flower
[name_f]Celeste[/name_f] - DH dislikes
[name_f]Tessa[/name_f] - lovely understated
[name_f]Phaedra[/name_f] - adore!
[name_f]Esmerelda[/name_f] - like the idea
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] - it’s my new guilty pleasure! Lots of drama and elegance
[name_f]Delilah[/name_f] - I like it
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f] - very sweet and I like the nickname [name_f]Mae[/name_f]
[name_f]Mae[/name_f] or [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] - yes!
[name_f]Elske[/name_f] - never heard, will have to look into this. Appreciate the letters
[name_f]Milla[/name_f] - too popular in Australia
[name_f]Opal[/name_f] - I love this one but am not sure how it would be perceived in years to come (I’m thinking of how [name_f]Crystal[/name_f] & [name_f]Jade[/name_f] are viewed now)
[name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] - very pretty!

Thanks for your suggestions! I love [name_f]Eleanore[/name_f] and its the name of my gorgeous rabbit! I also had a mouse named [name_f]Odette[/name_f] so you have suggested some names that I love. [name_f]Clara[/name_f] has always reminded me of the poor girl in [name_f]Heidi[/name_f] in the wheelchair. But thinking about it now I think it would be a sweet classic and pure first name. [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Mimosa[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u].
anaxandra Thanks for the below names. I agree about flo although its less commonly known as that here, I’ve only seen it on forums. Really not a nice association. Imagine how I felt when my husbands only 2 girl names he liked unbeknownst to him referred to a cocktail and that time of the month!
Ada - very likeable, short and sweet
Briony - I do like it but reminds me a bit much of Brian
Leora - My darling sister in laws name!!
January - so lovely. reminds me of January Jones
Olive - great grandmas middle name
Sage - spunky
Sienna - very popular here
Thea - Yep!
Holly - DH dislikes
Iris - DH dislikes (reminds him of an old lady in his church when he was a kid)
Verity - I see this as very whimsical for some reason
Willow - I love this but its a bit trendy for my liking
Zelda - So cool. I will suggest this to DH!
Jesslyn - I agree Mimosa does sound lovely, thank you for saying so. The world is becoming a smaller place and I wouldn’t want to leave our daughter with a first name thats seen as tacky or alcoholic!
I enjoy Cleo and Maeve (the more I think about it the more I like it!). Luna was on my list but some friends used it last month on their darling daughter.
carolinemchd - thank you for your quiet suggestions they are beautiful! Nice to see the whole name like that. Tallullah is one I haven’t thought of for a while… need to revisit.
You’re not sold on [name_f]Mimosa[/name_f] in the first name spot? It’s lovely. She could always go by [name_f]Mimi[/name_f], which has some of the retro spunk you like in [name_u]Jean[/name_u]. [name_f]Mimosa[/name_f] is my favorite flower. Well actually [name_f]Acacia[/name_f] dealbata, which is commonly known as mimosa… so I considered [name_f]Mimosa[/name_f] at one point, but [name_f]Acacia[/name_f] took its place on my list. It’s a wonderful fragrant plant, grows wild on hillsides in parts of [name_f]Italy[/name_f] and has these delicate leaves that fold up when you touch them.
I prefer [name_f]Jeanette[/name_f] to [name_u]Jean[/name_u], next to [name_f]Mimosa[/name_f]. [name_f]Mimosa[/name_f] is so feminine and feathery, and [name_u]Jean[/name_u] kind of clunks imho. [name_f]Jeanette[/name_f] is soft and more in keeping with [name_f]Mim[/name_f]. If you want a different first name, I agree it should be something short and crisp, to counter the sweetness of the rest of the name.
[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Claire[/name_f]? Or [name_u]Clare[/name_u]. Simple and beautiful and [name_m]French[/name_m].
[name_f]Claire[/name_f] [name_f]Jeanette[/name_f] [name_f]Mimosa[/name_f] F….
[name_f]My[/name_f] favorite of the names in your signature is [name_f]Winifred[/name_f]. I want to toss it in with [name_f]Mimosa[/name_f], but fear the combination is way too jumbly. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_u]Wynne[/name_u]? It makes me think of wind - wind blowing through mimosa trees.
[name_u]Wynne[/name_u] [name_f]Mimosa[/name_f] [name_f]Jeanette[/name_f] F…
[name_m]Just[/name_m] saw Oliviasarah’s suggestion of [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] [name_f]Mimosa[/name_f]. Fun!
emmabobemma you’re an angel! I also love the flower [name_f]Mimosa[/name_f] (acacia) and the smell reminds me of my first year of school and a tree we used as a cubby house.
[name_f]My[/name_f] husband thinks our [name_f]Mimosa[/name_f] would be called [name_f]Mim[/name_f] or M so I agree with you there.
[name_u]Jean[/name_u] does kind of clunk and I think that’s why I liked it? [name_f]Jeanette[/name_f] is nice but I don’t think hubby will agree. There’s a [name_f]Nanette[/name_f] in his family who he dislikes & the ‘ette’ ending sounds old lady to him.
I do personally love your suggestion of [name_f]Claire[/name_f] [name_f]Jeanette[/name_f] [name_f]Mimosa[/name_f]. I’ve always had a soft spot for [name_f]Claire[/name_f].
[name_u]Wynne[/name_u] [name_f]Mimosa[/name_f] [name_f]Jeanette[/name_f] is beautiful I love it! It has the meaning ‘friend’ which is a big plus.
