Okay, so the background for [name_m]Crow[/name_m] (I’ll be referring to him as [name_m]Crow[/name_m] throughout this) is that he’s a teen necromancer-for-hire who most people don’t know exists and those that do don’t know who he really is because he uses various aliases in order to keep the identity nobody knows a complete secret. In fairness to him, he’s also not entirely sure what his name really is anymore, since the only people who know it don’t use it and he’s spent enough time referring to himself with his own aliases that he just tends to be a random word related to death.
[name_m]Crow[/name_m] is not his actual surname. It’s the alias he chooses to use during his most recent job, and when things go wrong he ends up needing to stick to using it. However, the person he resurrects during said job ends up pointing out – pretty early on – that it’s probably not good for blending in, which is an issue considering the whole ‘things go wrong’ bit. It’s a little hard to explain the in-story motivations behind why [name_m]Crow[/name_m] ends up picking a first name, mostly because I haven’t entirely worked them out myself yet, but for me it’s because I don’t really want the main characters to be [name_m]Crow[/name_m] and [name_m]Matteo[/name_m], because they both share the same ‘o’ sound at the end.
...
And also because [name_m]Crow[/name_m] is slightly too weird for me when it comes to character naming. Most word names are. I mean, I’m toying between whether I do want a book when the main characters are mostly called ‘Babe’ and ‘Dude’ (they are called [name_u]Henry[/name_u] and [name_m]Eugene[/name_m], if anyone’s wondering) or whether I’d lose my mind trying to read it because of those nicknames. Not quite sure, but I think it’s the former.
Anyway. I have a very brief list of information about him set up: he has pale yellowish-grey eyes, black hair which may or may not end up having a white streak through it (it currently does in my visual representation of him because all-black hair never quite sits right with me there, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll end up on the page), has a tendency to wear a mask over the lower half of his face because of the whole ‘keeping his already very secret identity secret’ thing… you know. He wears clothes. All of the characters do that, because otherwise that would be very weird. Personality wise, he’s not exactly the most social creature in the world – I mean, [name_m]Matteo[/name_m] is the first friend he really makes ever, and that happens solely because raising him from the dead revealed an interesting little complication that should have made the whole thing impossible – and he can seem mildly unhinged, reacting to things in ways that don’t appear reasonable to ‘outsiders’, which is basically to say everybody. He’s basically self-trained when it comes to his necromancy, so his methods tend to be wild and reckless and also ‘why did that work, how did you make that thing you just did work, that is not how these things work’. When someone seems to be treating him decently, or better than usual, he’ll put everything into pleasing them because, you know, humans are social creatures and while he’s not really aware of it he’s desperate for that sort of connection.
I, uh, think that’s where I’ll leave it. It’s actually kinda difficult to work out what a character might name themselves when they have to do that, and all I’ve established is that word names would probably sound really weird with ‘Crow’ as a surname.
