My wife and I have our first baby on the way and haven’t decided on his name yet. We both really like the name [name_m]Greyson[/name_m] but I’m concerned with how it sounds with our last name [name_m]Barns[/name_m]. If we use the name [name_m]Greyson[/name_m] it is inevitable people will call him [name_u]Grey[/name_u], making his name “[name_u]Grey[/name_u] [name_m]Barns[/name_m]”.
When I hear that I’m worried that it is giving the mental image of a grey barn in a pasture. Am I overthinking this or is it a legitimate issue?
I think it’s borderline. Obviously [name_u]Red[/name_u] would be worse…and [name_m]Barns[/name_m] is such a common last name many people won’t think of the building at all. But color names do tend to have the affect with a lot of last names.
I agree with the previous poster, it’s borderline. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you want a name that could turn into an adjective and a noun? I have a similar issue, our last name is [name_m]Eddie[/name_m] and I love the first name [name_m]Harrison[/name_m]. [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] would definitely become [name_m]Harry[/name_m] and the name [name_m]Harry[/name_m] (hairy) [name_m]Eddie[/name_m] is just ewwwww. So I can commisserate with your situation. I would keep exploring name possibilities.
I do picture a gray barn when I hear the name, and also when I read [name_m]Grayson[/name_m] [name_m]Barns[/name_m] it makes me think of someone storing up “grace in barns”.
I personally wouldn’t do it. It depends on how much you love the name and how much it bothers you. It’s nothing terrible, a gray barn isn’t exactly a prime teasing metaphor, so it could never be an actual issue.
It isn’t the worst naming situation in the world but with a noun last name, I would avoid adjective firsts names.
What about [name_m]Graydon[/name_m] [name_m]Barns[/name_m] -[name_u]Grady[/name_u] [name_m]Barns[/name_m] - as an alternative. Or [name_m]Gregory[/name_m] [name_m]Barns[/name_m] - [name_m]Greg[/name_m] [name_m]Barns[/name_m]? Or. [name_m]Gordon[/name_m] [name_m]Barns[/name_m] - [name_m]Gordy[/name_m] [name_m]Barns[/name_m]?
