[name]Hi[/name] berries, I have some names on my list for one reason or another that seem too similar to me. So I thought a good way to narrow it down would be by doing a this-or that type question.
If at all possible, I would appreciate some feedback on why you picked one over the other. Thank you!!
[name]Chiara[/name] vs. [name]Carys[/name] vs. [name]Charis[/name] — Too similar sounding/looking
[name]Edie[/name] vs. [name]Eleni[/name] ---- same as above
[name]Lettie[/name] vs. [name]Winnie[/name] — they have the same ending and a “old fashioned nickname” feel
[name]Lucia[/name] vs. Louna — both have “lou” sounds (Id pronounce [name]Lucia[/name] as loo-see-uh)
[name]Mabel[/name] vs. [name]Maple[/name] vs. [name]Maeve[/name] — all have [name]May[/name] sounds
[name]Marina[/name] vs. [name]Reina[/name] — If I used nicknames with them, it’d be [name]Rin[/name] and [name]Rain[/name]… obviously that would be too close
[name]Carys[/name] - this seems more classic to me. [name]Chiara[/name] to me, even though it is a legit name, is associated with the mega ‘K’ names, [name]Caitlin[/name]/[name]Katelyn[/name], [name]Kayla[/name], [name]Kylie[/name] etc.
[name]Eleni[/name] - gorgeous and sultry. [name]Edie[/name], my only association is [name]Edie[/name] Falco, but it seems too masculine to me.
[name]Winnie[/name] - I just think it is cuter.
[name]Lucia[/name]- I think Louna will have spelling issues and even though [name]Luna[/name] is a cute name it me I always hear lunatic.
[name]Maeve[/name] - [name]Maple[/name] is too out there for me and [name]Mabel[/name] is just ok to me.
[name]Marina[/name] - I think [name]Reina[/name] will have spelling/pronunciation issues.
[name]Chiara[/name] vs. [name]Carys[/name] vs. [name]Charis[/name] — I think for these, it’s going to depend on your geographical location. In my area, all of those names would be mispronounced. I however think of the three, [name]Carys[/name] is sweeter and more elegant.
[name]Edie[/name] vs. [name]Eleni[/name] ---- [name]Eleni[/name] sounds more classical, and [name]Edie[/name] just, doesnt? Almost comes off as [name]Eddie[/name] which I know sounds ridiculous, I’m sorry.
[name]Lettie[/name] vs. [name]Winnie[/name] — This one’s tough. I love [name]Winnie[/name], but you have to think of that stage where every child becomes familiar with [name]Winnie[/name] the Pooh and you never know what sort of repercussions will come with that name. That said, I think it sounds better then [name]Lettie[/name].
[name]Lucia[/name] vs. Louna — [name]Lucia[/name] is way lovelier then Louna, who people may pronounce [name]Luna[/name].
[name]Mabel[/name] vs. [name]Maple[/name] vs. [name]Maeve[/name] — I don’t want to be that person, but please don’t name your child [name]Maple[/name]. You have to remember kids are vicious (first hand experience there) and no one wants to be called [name]Maple[/name] syrup which is bound to happen. [name]Mabel[/name] is only slightly less horrifying in modern times. My next door neighbor’s name is [name]Mabel[/name]. She’s 93. I am not saying this for comedic effect, I am very serious. Only in the past year have I come to appreciate the name [name]Maeve[/name]. I think it’s very classical, and I love its Celtic roots.
[name]Marina[/name] vs. [name]Reina[/name]— [name]Marina[/name]? As in where you store your boats? Or maybe you pronounce it differently? Besides, [name]Reina[/name] sounds nicer.
ajh: That’s actually one of my worries about [name]Chiara[/name], so I’m glad you brought it up. It looks and sounds pretty, but then it also has that trendy sound that makes me have pause. [name]Edie[/name] for me doesn’t feel boyish, but rather… springy (I think it’s the eee~ at the beginning) but I appreciate the comment. Thanks for answering my question
redwillow: I think where I live the easiest one to wear would probably be [name]Carys[/name], though I’m not raelly sure. All I know is we do not have a large concentration of Italian folk here so [name]Chiara[/name] is probably not going to be intuitive. [name]Eddie[/name] isn’t ridiculous - that would be my one concern since it is only a letter different from [name]Edie[/name] and I could see someone who’s never heard of the name calling her “eddy.”
Louna is actually a French [name]Luna[/name], so they’d be the same more or less. I appreciate the [name]Maple[/name] comments even if they are negative. Gotta consider everything, after all. As far as [name]Mabel[/name] goes, I [name]LOVE[/name] old lady/old man names so that doesn’t really resonate with me. No, I pronounce it like the word [name]Marina[/name] but for me that would have a positive connotation.
PS- love the quote in your sig!
tfzolghadr: Yes, we do not want guidos, though, tragically, her grandparents did obsessively watch that one infamous show filled with them… [name]Rania[/name] I want to like, but I can’t get past “[name]Nia[/name]” as I grew up with a horrifying girl named that. [name]Reina[/name] I like for the sound and that it reminds me of a place I previously lived.
[name]Chiara[/name] vs. [name]Carys[/name] vs. [name]Charis[/name] — [name]Chiara[/name]. I love the element of opulence that it evokes. I just imagine a princess for some reason! I understand it may be seen as somewhat of a ‘trendy’ name due to the similarity with [name]Keira[/name], [name]Kylie[/name] and so on but it just has a richer feel to me. [name]Edie[/name] vs. [name]Eleni[/name] ---- [name]Eleni[/name] is lovely. So different and refreshing. A spunkier [name]Elena[/name] (which I also love!) [name]Lettie[/name] vs. [name]Winnie[/name] — It’s a close call as I’m not particularly fond of either… but I’d go with [name]Lettie[/name] purely because [name]Winnie[/name] makes me think of [name]Winnie[/name] the Pooh. [name]Lucia[/name] vs. Louna — Louna is lovely, though I’d prefer [name]Luna[/name] is it’s more simple. [name]Lucia[/name] would be my choice though. [name]Mabel[/name] vs. [name]Maple[/name] vs. [name]Maeve[/name] — [name]Maeve[/name] is lovely. [name]Marina[/name] vs. [name]Reina[/name]— I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Marina[/name], it’s one my favourites. The harbour reference doesn’t bother me at all.
My choices: [name]Chiara[/name], [name]Eleni[/name], [name]Lettie[/name], [name]Lucia[/name], [name]Maeve[/name], [name]Marina[/name].
[name]Chiara[/name] vs. [name]Carys[/name] vs. [name]Charis[/name] - strong but feminine and gloriously Italian!!!
[name]Edie[/name] vs. [name]Eleni[/name] - A lovely Greek gem. [name]Edie[/name] is fine for a nn of an [name]Edith[/name].
[name]Lettie[/name] vs. [name]Winnie[/name] - both are a little too cutesy for full names in my opinion but I think I like [name]Winnie[/name] better (full name [name]Winifred[/name]) [name]Lucia[/name] vs. Louna - [name]Lucia[/name] is gorgeous. Louna just looks like an odd misspelling of [name]Luna[/name]. [name]Mabel[/name] vs. [name]Maple[/name] vs. [name]Maeve[/name] - I love the vintage charm of [name]Mabel[/name] as a first name. The other two I would use in for the middle spot. [name]Marina[/name] vs. [name]Reina[/name] - [name]Marina[/name] has more substance. [name]Reina[/name] means “queen” in Spanish so it’s a bit cheesy.
romanticism: I can’t really decide on how I feel about it. Because my usual taste doesn’t extend to trendy names, I don’t want to go there if [name]Chiara[/name] truly is similar to them.
mischa: [name]Edith[/name] doesn’t really do it for me so if I used [name]Edie[/name] it’d be on its own I think. Nickname names aren’t bothersome to me. [name]Reina[/name] being a wordy name doesn’t bother me either, but it’s good to get honest feedback on how others perceive it.
[name]Chiara[/name] vs. [name]Carys[/name] vs. [name]Charis[/name] - I can see the other two having pronunciation problems
[name]Edie[/name] vs. [name]Eleni[/name]
[name]Lettie[/name] vs. [name]Winnie[/name] - [name]Lettie[/name] reminds me of lettice, [name]Winnie[/name] of [name]Winnie[/name] the Pooh. I don’t know which would be easier to live with. [name]Lucia[/name] vs. Louna - I like [name]Luna[/name], but the O looks out of place. [name]Mabel[/name] vs. [name]Maple[/name] vs. [name]Maeve[/name] [name]Marina[/name] vs. [name]Reina[/name]
