First Nameberry Post! - Need Some Ideas Please

Hello,

This is my first post on Nameberry, as the title says, and I am in need of some suggestions for a sibling name for my son, [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] who we call Hugo on occasions. [name_m]Matthew[/name_m]'s name has a lot of special meaning for my husband and I. However, we do wish [name_m]Matthew[/name_m]'s name wasn't so popular but of course it's a classic. We are looking for boy and girl names that would compliment [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] but is more uncommon. Maybe a classic you don't hear anymore? We would also like a name with different or unusual nicknames, maybe even using the meaning as a possible nickname. An example is [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] with the nickname [name_u]Kit[/name_u]

Here is our list so far, none of them feel like the one…
Boys
Fritzgerald nickname [name_m]Fritz[/name_m]
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] nickname [name_m]Rowe[/name_m] - might be too popular?
[name_m]Espen[/name_m](family name)
[name_u]Winslow[/name_u] - nickname Wins
Girls
[name_f]Clara[/name_f] - too popular?
[name_u]Winter[/name_u] - is it weird?
Azula
[name_f]Elowen[/name_f] - pronunciation issues

Any more I should add? Thanks for helping me add to our list!

I would avoid Fritzgerald - I kept reading it wrong as [name_m]Fitzgerald[/name_m], and I’m sure people will his whole life!

[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] is on my short list for my number two and I adore it. It’s not insanely popular yet- but I’m eyeing that trend as well.

Of your girls, I like [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] best. [name_f]Clara[/name_f] is pretty, too, and I for one never hear it anymore.

The names I like most from your list are [name_u]Winslow[/name_u] for a boy and [name_f]Clara[/name_f] for a girl. They both have a classic sound to them and would go well with [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] [name_m]Augustus[/name_m].

Right now, [name_u]Rowen[/name_u] is getting very popular. I actually know 3 couples that used the name over this past year for their babies…(2 boys and 1 girl) and I live in a somewhat small town. [name_m]Espen[/name_m] is quite unusual in a good way and I’d definately consider using it if it has special family meaning. I also think [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]/[name_u]Kit[/name_u] is a great choice!

Some other classic names you might consider combining to go with
[name_m]Matthew[/name_m] [name_m]Augustus[/name_m]

[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f]

[name_m]Just[/name_m] a few that I really love.

Thanks you two for your opinions and suggestions! I’m loving the names so far, any more out there?

Also, another question, this one about pronunciation. [name_m]How[/name_m] is [name_u]Willoughby[/name_u] pronounced? Is it like willow-bee? Thanks!

Yes, [name_u]Willoughby[/name_u] is pronounced like “willow-bee”. I think [name_m]Peter[/name_m] and [name_m]Dominic[/name_m] might be good pairings with [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] [name_m]Augustus[/name_m].

[name_m]Matthew[/name_m] [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] is dashing. I like [name_u]Winslow[/name_u] and [name_f]Clara[/name_f] from your list. You’ve gotten some fantastic suggestions already. I’m in love with the idea of [name_m]Dominic[/name_m] [name_u]Winslow[/name_u] for a second boy. I also like:

[name_m]Thomas[/name_m]
[name_m]Dominic[/name_m] - this is wonderful with [name_m]Matthew[/name_m]'s name
[name_m]Peter[/name_m]
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m]
[name_m]Alexander[/name_m] - consider [name_m]Evander[/name_m] or [name_m]Leander[/name_m] as alternatives if [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] is too popular
[name_m]Ezekiel[/name_m]
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m]
[name_m]Zachary[/name_m]
[name_m]Timothy[/name_m]
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m]

[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f]
[name_f]Frances[/name_f]
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]

Thank you! Unfortunately I can’t use [name_m]Dominic[/name_m] as that’s my cousins name. I guess I’m looking for an really uncommon, vintage name. We love [name_u]Everett[/name_u] but wonder if it’s too popular. I know, [name_m]Matthew[/name_m]'s mama, worrying about popularity. We’re thinking of using [name_m]Samson[/name_m] as the middle name, as it’s a family name. Any ideas? Thanks again!

[name_m]Matthew[/name_m] [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] is a wonderful name, I adore it!

From the choices you discussed I particularly like [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] or [name_u]Winslow[/name_u] for a boy and [name_f]Clara[/name_f] for a girl.

Ooh, just realized you said you would possibly use Samson as a middle name for a boy, I love it!

sorry for repeats!

I think [name_u]Willoughby[/name_u] [name_m]Samson[/name_m] sounds great but is a little out there compared to [name_m]Matthew[/name_m]! I think [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] and [name_f]Clara[/name_f] are perfect together, and [name_f]Clara[/name_f] isn’t at all common really. I do like [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] & [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] together too.

Other ideas…
[name_m]Matthew[/name_m] & [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] [name_m]Samson[/name_m]

I think [name_f]Clara[/name_f] is too popular, at least in my area. You can look on the social security website by state and see how it is in your region. But it is a really beautiful name.
[name_f]Polly[/name_f] and [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] have an old-fashioned charm, I’m not sure if you like them (originally nicknames for [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Sarah[/name_f])
[name_f]Tahlia[/name_f]
[name_f]Eve[/name_f]
[name_f]Corinne[/name_f] (cor-IN)

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_f]Claudia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f] (called [name_u]Sunny[/name_u], Susu, [name_f]Sanna[/name_f])
[name_f]Flora[/name_f]
[name_f]Camille[/name_f]
[name_f]Nora[/name_f]

I know! I feel because we used such a popular first name, like [name_m]Matthew[/name_m], we need to use someone really similar in popularity so they don’t look out of place. We would’ve loved to use something more uncommon; we were actually looking at names out of the Top 1000! However, [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] was named after a dear family member who had a wonderful presence in our lives. We just got over the popularity and used it as we LOVED the name anyways  Plus we use a different nickname than other Matthews, Hugo. We love unique nicknames.

Thank you everyone, I’m loving so many of y’alls suggestions so far!

For a girl I love [name_f]Elowen[/name_f]. Obviously I love Azula, but maybe not as a sister to [name_m]Matthew[/name_m]!

Boys: I love [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]. [name_u]Winslow[/name_u] & Fritzgerald are great names too.
