First or Middle name?

We have been set on naming our son after our Grandfather’s for years. But now I can’t decide which name should be the first and which should be the middle. The name is:

[name_m]Edward[/name_m] [name_m]Lockwood[/name_m]

I think we will want to call him [name_m]Lock[/name_m] (not totally set on that yet). However, I have lots of friends who are called by their middle name and say it’s been such a hassle growing up correcting people. What do you think? Should it be [name_m]Edward[/name_m] [name_m]Lockwood[/name_m] or [name_m]Lockwood[/name_m] [name_m]Edward[/name_m]? Thanks for your input in advance!

I think if you are going to call him [name_m]Lock[/name_m], just go with [name_m]Lockwood[/name_m] [name_m]Edward[/name_m]. I never understood why people choose to call their kids by their middle name instead of their first and if that’s the case, why they didn’t choose to just go with the middle as the first. I’ve heard some people say it is for family reasons or for flow. I do prefer [name_m]Edward[/name_m] [name_m]Lockwood[/name_m]'s flow, but think it’s totally worth it to forgo the flow and go with [name_m]Lockwood[/name_m] [name_m]Edward[/name_m], which is nice too  By the way, [name_m]Lock[/name_m] is a really cool name!

I agree - if you plan to call him [name_m]Lock[/name_m], use [name_m]Lockwood[/name_m] as the first name. I agree that [name_m]Edward[/name_m] [name_m]Lockwood[/name_m] sounds a bit better than [name_m]Lockwood[/name_m] [name_m]Edward[/name_m], but the middle name doesn’t often see a lot of use anyway. As long as [name_m]Lockwood[/name_m] sounds OK with the surname, I’d say put it in the first name spot.

I think [name_m]Edward[/name_m] [name_m]Lockwood[/name_m] sounds better, and I think [name_m]Lockwood[/name_m] seems more fit as a middle. You still get the fun/quirky nickname “[name_m]Lock[/name_m]”, with a more traditional first name to fall back on. Good luck!

Totally agree with emsky!

I actually prefer [name_m]Lockwood[/name_m] [name_m]Edward[/name_m] more. Plus he will still have the more conservative [name_m]Edward[/name_m] in the middle to fall back on, or even the nickname [name_m]Lock[/name_m], than with the name [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m] nn [name_m]Loch[/name_m] isn’t too out there.

Thanks everyone so much for your feedback! I had written this on another baby forum as well, and the contributors on that site were not near as tactful or kind with their responses. I appreciate all the people on this site!
