We are excitedly expecting our second daughter this [name_u]August[/name_u], but can’t come up with a name. I feel like I spend all my spare time on Nameberry these days looking for inspiration!
Our older daughter is named [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] and it just fits her perfectly. We usually tend toward more unisex/naturey/unusual names for girls (like [name_u]Scout[/name_u], [name_u]Sloane[/name_u], Teagen, [name_u]River[/name_u], [name_f]Tess[/name_f], [name_u]Aspen[/name_u], [name_m]Cole[/name_m], [name_u]Drew[/name_u]), but for some reason I just am sensing that this little girl needs a more feminine name. Still strong, but more feminine.
The name [name_f]Colette[/name_f] came to me the other day, but it is so far from anything that I would ever choose, that I just don’t think we could name her that. (even though [name_m]Cole[/name_m] or [name_f]Coco[/name_f] would be cute nicknames!). What are some other ideas of feminine but strong names?
[name_f]My[/name_f] mother’s middle name is [name_u]Jean[/name_u] so we would probably go for that as the mn for this baby, or use her first name which is [name_f]Marilyn[/name_f]. Our last name begins with an M and is two syllables. Some ideas but not sure any of these are really “the one.”
I think [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] and [name_f]Colette[/name_f] make a nice pair I could also [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] with a little sister named…
[name_u]Fifer[/name_u]
[name_u]Spencer[/name_u]
[name_u]Hadley[/name_u]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_u]Arden[/name_u]
[name_u]Shiloh[/name_u]
[name_f]Harlow[/name_f]
[name_u]Emery[/name_u]
I love the suggestion of [name_f]Gemma[/name_f] and I think [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u] is absolutely fantastic! It’s not insanely frilly so it pairs great with [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] but it’s still strong and feminine. [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_f]Brynn[/name_f]. Gorgeous
Thanks for the suggestions jsharris18! I like a lot of those names-- in fact we almost named our first daughter [name_u]Emery[/name_u]. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband liked [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] off your list, but I know someone with that name and I don’t love the association! [name_u]Hadley[/name_u] was on my list for a little while, but I’m feeling like it’s a little too much of a surname for this baby. I also like the suggestion of [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] [name_u]Jean[/name_u], but I think ultimately wanting something less unisex.
Please keep them coming people! There are so many names I like, but still not finding the “one.” Only 8 weeks to go!
Is [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u] too “country” sounding?
Well I love all of the names in your original list so I probably won’t be much help
I don’t think [name_f]Colette[/name_f] is bad - I like the NN [name_f]Coco[/name_f] but don’t really like [name_f]Colette[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u] or [name_f]Colette[/name_f] [name_f]Marilyn[/name_f].
I definitely don’t like [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] - anything with liz makes me think of '[name_u]Les[/name_u]'bian. Yes - weird I know.
It’s funny because my friend has 3 girls and their names are [name_u]Teagan[/name_u], [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] and [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] so I think either of those choices are perfect!
Ha! Great suggestions! Funny that your friend (cengel173) has daughters with three of the names on our original list! They definitely go well together.
I totally love [name_u]Avery[/name_u] [name_u]Jean[/name_u] actually but our neighbor up the street has a daughter named [name_u]Avery[/name_u], and she plays with [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] sometimes. I always automatically disqualify a name if I know anyone who has named their daughter that.
But I do think [name_u]Avery[/name_u] & [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] sound like a great pair, and [name_u]Avery[/name_u] [name_u]Jean[/name_u] works well! I also kind of like [name_u]Dakota[/name_u] but not feeling it for this baby.
I realize I’m all over the board, but what about [name_u]Harley[/name_u]? That name just came to me this morning too. Is that too masculine? I used to think of [name_u]Harley[/name_u] [name_m]Davidson[/name_m] when I heard that name, but it’s striking me more as a cool, and even feminine girl’s name: [name_u]Harley[/name_u] [name_u]Jean[/name_u]. And one more: What about [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] with the nickname [name_u]Scout[/name_u]?
Would [name_u]Everly[/name_u] [name_u]Jean[/name_u] work? Close to [name_u]Avery[/name_u] but not the same…
I adore [name_u]Scout[/name_u] so I think the [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] with NN [name_u]Scout[/name_u] would work but I would just use [name_u]Scout[/name_u] on it’s own.
I totally love [name_u]Scout[/name_u] on its own too but think it takes a certain kind of girl to pull it off. [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] totally could have rocked that name. She is spunky and cute, not too girly. I really feel like I need to give this baby #2 a more feminine name so I don’t think we can just use [name_u]Scout[/name_u]. I feel like I need to give her an out for when she’s older or if she just turns out to not fit the name. BUT>…… I don’t love [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] on its own so it feels kind of funny to name her [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] just to get the [name_u]Scout[/name_u]. It’s similar to naming her [name_f]Colette[/name_f] just so I can call her [name_m]Cole[/name_m] or [name_f]Coco[/name_f]!
What about [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] and [name_f]Jade[/name_f]?
[name_f]Jade[/name_f] is feminine without needing the typical female endings, almost unisex ([name_u]Jaden[/name_u]), has nature origins, very pretty and similiar in style but different in sound and spelling from [name_f]Brynn[/name_f].
[name_u]Delaney[/name_u] [name_u]Jean[/name_u] nn [name_u]Laney[/name_u].
[name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] [name_u]Jean[/name_u]
[name_f]Michaela[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u]
[name_f]Jocelyn[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u] (not the best combo but you could call her [name_u]Jo[/name_u]/[name_u]Josie[/name_u] or JJ)
[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u]…[name_f]Ally[/name_f], [name_u]Lexi[/name_u], [name_u]Alex[/name_u], AJ…the list could go on
OOh, I like [name_u]Delaney[/name_u], nm [name_u]Laney[/name_u]! But… it makes my husband think of some NFL football player by that name, [name_u]Delaney[/name_u] [name_u]Walker[/name_u]? boo.
I also really like [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] but my husband thinks it’s “meh.” He’s harder to please than I am!
Thanks for all the great suggestions-- keep them coming!
Thank you all who have responded so far! [name_f]My[/name_f] list of favorites seems to keep changing, and you all have given me lots of good ones to consider-- I just haven’t found the one yet.
The way that the name [name_f]Colette[/name_f] came to me out of nowhere, and is SO far from any name I would ever choose makes me kind of feel like that’s the one the baby is choosing for herself…. That may sound strange, but I just keep coming back to it, even though it feels almost pretentious to me (and again, is just so unlike our normal faves like [name_f]Brynn[/name_f], [name_u]Scout[/name_u], [name_u]Sloane[/name_u], etc).
Have any of you had dreams where your baby chose his or her name?
Also, what is the general feeling on [name_f]Colette[/name_f]? Is it too stuffy or hoity toity or old fashioned or something? And, could I get away with having her nickname be [name_f]Coco[/name_f] or [name_m]Cole[/name_m]? [name_f]My[/name_f] husband even likes [name_f]Letty[/name_f] as a nickname, so we are all about the nicknames on [name_f]Colette[/name_f]! [name_m]Just[/name_m] can’t imagine announcing [name_f]Colette[/name_f] as her full name to people. Why am I so resistant to it? Is it really that bad?
