I really like the nickname [name_m]Fitz[/name_m], but all the variations, [name_m]Fitzgerald[/name_m], [name_m]Fitzhugh[/name_m], [name_m]Fitzpatrick[/name_m]…, I can only see as a last name not a first.
So, If a child is name after his father or both parents, would [name_m]Fitz[/name_m] as a nickname work? Considering that the meaning of [name_m]Fitz[/name_m] is “son of”. Or the name would need to have [name_m]Fitz[/name_m] somewhere?
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m] can be shortened to [name_m]Fritz[/name_m] but I think [name_m]Fitz[/name_m] can work for it too.
For me, the name would just have to start with an F and I think [name_m]Fitz[/name_m] could work. I don’t think [name_m]Fitz[/name_m]'s meaning is well known enough for ppl to just get what you’re going for. [name_m]Fitz[/name_m] isn’t an all around nn like [name_m]Buddy[/name_m], [name_m]Buck[/name_m], etc. in my mind.
But I find [name_m]Fitz[/name_m] to be darling so do what you want and ppl will probably go with it.
I actually had no idea that that’s what it meant!
I think that most people won’t know either, so in my opinion it could stand on its own.
Though the suggestions of using [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] or other F- names is nice and could also work!
Some ideas: [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m], [name_m]Finnian[/name_m], [name_m]Fraser[/name_m], [name_m]Fidel[/name_m], [name_m]Phillip[/name_m], [name_u]Francis[/name_u], [name_m]Phineas[/name_m]
I think it works as a name on its own, but would more likely use it as a nickname for [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] or [name_m]Felix[/name_m].
Also, if I remember rightly [name_m]Fitz[/name_m] specifically means ‘illegitimate son of’ so I wouldn’t use it as a nickname for a son named after his parents. Obviously there’s nothing wrong with being illegitimate, and it’s an outdated idea, but it could quite easily lead to teasing.
