Ok, so I am here w/ another question. [name_f]Flora[/name_f] has ALWAYS been my most favourite girl name. it was the name of my late Great Aunt who I admire more than anyone. My husband had originally vetoed this name as he didn’t like it. Once our second daughter was born and we named her [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], he told me actually loved the name [name_f]Flora[/name_f] and was sorry it took him so long to realize. What upsets me now is that [name_f]Flora[/name_f] and [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] are pretty close. Are they too close? Keep in mind I would always call her [name_f]Florrie[/name_f] as that’s what my Aunt went back. We have a Mhairi and [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]. So is [name_f]Florrie[/name_f]/[name_f]Flora[/name_f] too similar to [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] to work? Please be honest as I do have other ideas for names but if [name_f]Flora[/name_f]/[name_f]Florrie[/name_f] is an option then I would like to consider it now that my husband likes it!
They are both lovely names and I don’t think they’re too similar for sisters:)
[name_m]Both[/name_m] are beautiful. It would be too close for me.
While I love them both, they would be too close for me as well. I think it would get confusing around the house.
If she went by [name_f]Florrie[/name_f], I don’t think it would be too close at all. Really cute names!!
It could be fine. [name_f]Do[/name_f] the yell test a few times.
ha Yell test. I like that. I grew up with just one sister and we are [name_f]Melissa[/name_f] and [name_f]Mallory[/name_f]. [name_u]Mel[/name_u] and [name_u]Mal[/name_u]. Very close. But honestly never bothered us at all. But it seems it does both people more often than not when names are too close. When I say [name_f]Flora[/name_f] and [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] out loud it kind of makes me think of [name_f]Flora[/name_f] and [name_f]Fauna[/name_f] woops! Anyway, I had ruled it out entirely this time as felt it was too close to [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]. But considering we’d always call her [name_f]Florrie[/name_f], it’s not that bad. I don’t mind matching letters as I come from a long line of M’s. haha I think I will add it back to my final list anyway. [name_f]May[/name_f] not use it.
It is too close for me personally; same number of letters, same starting and ending sound…just too much.
[name_f]Flora[/name_f] as a middle would work wonderfully though.
If we choose not to use as first then I may very well put in the middle b/c it is a beautiful name. But I agree it is quite close! Really close haha
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f] and [name_f]Flora[/name_f] are different names. They merely share a first initial.
[name_f]Flora[/name_f] is a much stronger, more attractive name than [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], so by all means, use it.
I simply adore [name_f]Flora[/name_f] and would very much encourage you to use it.
Personally I’m not too fond of matching letters but if I loved both names, it wouldn’t matter that much.
I think they’re pretty borderline in terms of similarity! Yes the first initial and last letter are the same, but the sounds are very different. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you nickname your [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]? Fi/[name_f]Fia[/name_f] and [name_f]Florrie[/name_f] are very distinguishable!
Visually they look alike, but spoken they’re not all that similar. I think you’re fine, especially if she’s usually [name_f]Florrie[/name_f]
I really love them together! The are completely different, but go really well.
Hmm. I actually just reread an old British children’s book (1940s) called ‘Highland Twins at the Chalet School’ by [name_f]Elinor[/name_f] [name_m]Brent[/name_m]-Dyer, which had a set of Scottish twins called [name_f]Flora[/name_f] and [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] in it. In the book they are quickly nicknamed ‘[name_f]Flora[/name_f] and [name_f]Fauna[/name_f]’ by everyone. I think it is actually very cute, and the starting syllables ‘Fi’ and ‘[name_f]Flo[/name_f]’ are really quite different. My only thought would be that having two such close names might make Mhairi (lovely name btw!) seem a bit incongruous? It could work well as a middle perhaps if you decide against it? Also, I think [name_f]Flossie[/name_f] is a very cute nickname too!
We don’t nickname [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] right now. I’ve tried but nothing felt natural yet. She’s only ten months so a nickname still may develop. Though with [name_f]Flora[/name_f] I would be using nickname [name_f]Florrie[/name_f] from the start as that’s why I love the name so much.
Maybe you could use [name_f]Flora[/name_f] as a middle name?
I thought of flora and fauna when I read it as well, which would bother me if I were [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] (one of my favorite names btw). I like it in the middle though!
