I thought I was looking for a flower name, but It turns out I’m very attracted to ‘D’ names… My name is Davena, so maybe it’s familiarity that draws me to them.
I have loved the name [name]Daisy[/name] for as long as I can remember, but it is fairly set that the middle name will be ‘[name]May[/name]’… it has been used for the eldest girl for the last three generations… and weirdly, my husband’s grandmothers name is [name]May[/name] also, so…
[name]Daisy[/name] [name]May[/name] (but I’m worried that maybe it sounds a bit ‘Dukes of [name]Hazzard[/name]’, or ‘[name]Beverly[/name] Hillbillies’-esque.)
(apprently I also love names that end in ‘a’ or the ‘ah’ sound!)
I’m also tempted by [name]Myrtle[/name], I had a Great Aunt [name]Myrtle[/name] that I remember very fondly, and I love [name]Myrtle[/name] for it’s nn’s ([name]Millie[/name], [name]Tilly[/name])… but [name]Myrtle[/name] [name]May[/name] is a no go… also is it too old fashioned still?
I’ve recently fallen for [name]Maisie[/name], but again [name]Maisie[/name] [name]May[/name]… blurgh.
Anyways, so does anyone have any suggestions for flower/d/ends in ‘ah’ names that I might like? My husband has crossed [name]Iris[/name], [name]Willow[/name], [name]Violet[/name] and [name]Poppy[/name] off the flower names list.
The middle name will be [name]May[/name], so it has to go with that, and the last name sounds like Finnmore.
Unfortunately, I think you’re right about [name]Daisy[/name], [name]Myrtle[/name] and [name]Maisie[/name] not going well with the mn [name]May[/name]. I like them all though (but [name]Daisy[/name] is very popular), and I think [name]Myrtle[/name] would be a great choice in future - yes, it is old-fashioned, but she can always be nicknamed and it is highly unusual.
[name]Delilah[/name] ([name]Lilah[/name]/[name]Lily[/name]) [name]May[/name] - a nice name with a good sound, and [name]Lily[/name] [name]May[/name] is cute.
[name]Dahlia[/name] [name]May[/name] - nice and unusual.
[name]Daria[/name] [name]May[/name] - I don’t think this is as pretty as some of your other choices, and is curiously hard to say with [name]May[/name].
[name]Lena[/name] [name]May[/name] - this has a nice flow to it. You could use [name]Lena[/name] as a short form of [name]Helena[/name] to increase the length.
[name]Eva[/name] [name]May[/name] - a lovely name, although very short to go with a very short mn … you would have to keep other children’s names to this length, too, which could be limiting.
[name]Freya[/name] [name]May[/name] - another nice name, but too repetitive with the mn [name]May[/name].
[name]How[/name] about :
[name]Ambrosia[/name] nn [name]Amy[/name]/[name]Rosie[/name]
[name]Daffodil[/name]
[name]Tulip[/name]
[name]Posy[/name]/[name]Posey[/name]/[name]Posie[/name] - I have been looking for a full name which offers this as a nn for a friend, and [name]Mariposa[/name] (Spanish for ‘butterfly’) has been suggested to me, which I think is beautiful
[name]Peony[/name]
[name]Poppy[/name]
[name]Pansy[/name]
[name]Tansy[/name]
[name]Flora[/name]
[name]Verbena[/name] nn Bean (a flower, never used as a name)
Celandine (another flower)
[name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Dorothea[/name] nn [name]Dotty[/name]/[name]Thea[/name]/Dodi
[name]Narcissa[/name] (obvious negative connotations from the myth)
[name]Magnolia[/name] (people might think ‘Bakery’)
[name]Marigold[/name]
[name]Daphne[/name] (means ‘laurel’ in Greek, and one of my personal favourites)
[name]Amaryllis[/name] (it means ‘to sparkle’, as well as being a flower)
[name]Ianthe[/name] (means ‘violet’ in Greek)
[name]Clover[/name]
[name]Dolora[/name]/[name]Dolores[/name] (I advise against this, as it means ‘sorrow’)
[name]Heather[/name]
[name]Hyacinth[/name] (still very ‘Keeping Up Appearances’ to me)
[name]Jasmine[/name]
[name]Delphia[/name]/[name]Delphine[/name]
[name]Lavender[/name]
[name]Mimosa[/name]
[name]Azalea[/name]
[name]Diantha[/name] (from the dianthus flower)
[name]Primrose[/name]
[name]Amarantha[/name] nn [name]Amy[/name]?
[name]Calanthe[/name] ([name]Cal[/name]-an-thee - a type of orchid)
Chrysanta/[name]Anthea[/name] (a derivative)
I’ve seen [name]Briar[/name] and [name]Briar[/name] [name]Rose[/name] on here a lot, too.
While [name]Rose[/name] is uber-popular, other variants there-of could be used, e.g. [name]Rosanna[/name]/[name]Roseanna[/name], [name]Rosamund[/name], [name]Rosalind[/name].
All the M names I’ve mentioned still have the alliteration problem with [name]May[/name], but I thought I’d throw them in there anyway.
I hope that helps!
Twinkle, thanks for your suggestions, I just wanted to throw in that my son (from a previous marriage) has a very long, unusual name, but we always call him ‘TK’.
From your list, I particularly like [name]Daphne[/name] (another ‘D’ name!), [name]Ianthe[/name] and [name]Anthea[/name].
[name]Rose[/name] for a first name by itself hasn’t been above the 200 spot in popularity for almost 40 years. It’s currently at 344. More popular as a middle name than that, I would guess. [name]Rose[/name] [name]May[/name], though, is kind of short, I do like the longer variants.
I think you listed enough flower names, I have no more ideas.
For D names. Oddly, I like [name]Darcy[/name] and [name]Deirdre[/name], also [name]Delaney[/name], [name]Donnelly[/name], [name]Dylan[/name].
It seems impractical, but I love [name]Dulce[/name] or [name]Dulcie[/name], [name]Dulcinea[/name], and for some reason, most people can’t get on board with [name]Doris[/name], but I think that’s a cute name. There are a lot of D names to look at here, I don’t love most of them, but maybe something will call out to you from the big list. [name]Delphine[/name] and [name]Daphne[/name] seem to be popular recommendations.
I agree with justthinkin about [name]Bryony[/name] [name]May[/name]! Also love [name]Daphne[/name] and [name]Daria[/name].
What about [name]Dasha[/name]?
Thanks everyone for the suggestions, my husband and I went through all the names suggested and my shortlist now stands as:
[name]Daisy[/name] (I’m keeping it on for now)
[name]Delilah[/name] ([name]Lilah[/name]/[name]Lily[/name])
[name]Dahlia[/name]
[name]Lena[/name]
[name]Anthea[/name] (Thanks twinkle, both my husband I and I love this.)
unicorngal – My name is Davena [name]May[/name], so Davinia [name]May[/name] could be confusing. LOL
Does anyone have any suggestions of names along these lines that aren’t flower or D names?
[name]Briar[/name] [name]May[/name]
[name]Adelia[/name] [name]May[/name] nn [name]Delia[/name]
[name]Rosaleen[/name] [name]May[/name]
[name]Rosalie[/name] [name]May[/name] nn [name]Rosie[/name]
[name]Roma[/name] short for [name]Rosemary[/name], I love [name]Roma[/name]!
[name]Corabelle[/name] [name]May[/name]
and I love the name [name]Fern[/name], but not so much with [name]May[/name]
Another vote for [name]Daphne[/name] [name]May[/name] and [name]Bryony[/name] [name]May[/name]
I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Danika[/name] [name]May[/name]
[name]Amaryllis[/name] is one of my favorite flower names. Also: [name]Laurel[/name], [name]Lilac[/name], [name]Lavender[/name], [name]Zinnia[/name], Rosabella
What a bummer about [name]Daisy[/name] with [name]May[/name]. Honestly, I might still be tempted to use it. [name]Daisy[/name] Finnmore has such lovely appeal.
Otherwise, I like [name]Daphne[/name] (means laurel).
