We’re expecting in [name_u]January[/name_u] and I’ve always really liked the name [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] for a baby boy (we already have a DD, [name_f]Cecily[/name_f]) and the best part is that the name’s meaning–son of a red head–is perfect as my husband does indeed have red hair! My issue with it is that it’s so similar to [name_u]Finn[/name_u] and all those [name_m]Fin[/name_m]-y that are super popular right now. We know like three families that have Finns or Finleys or some variation. I think [name_u]Finn[/name_u]'s a lovely name, but I don’t like names that are in any way popular or trendy. So my question is:
1-Does [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] sound too similar to [name_u]Finn[/name_u] (or any of its variants)? Or is it distinct enough that people won’t be confused? I don’t want it lumped in with all those trendy Irish names…
2-[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think, with the rise of [name_u]Finn[/name_u], that [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] is likely to gain a lot more popularity? Anything inside the top 200 is kind of a turn off for me (it’s currently at 600-something).
I think [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] is distinct enough from [name_u]Finn[/name_u].
[name_u]Flynn[/name_u] seems to have held steady in it’s rankings. Still, it’s admission to the top 1000 was sudden and it will likely become a generational name. I don’t think it will rise as much as all of the [name_u]Finn[/name_u]'s, largely due to [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] sound a lot like Phlegm.
I’ve always thought it sounded like phlegm. I wouldn’t say that [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] is too trendy, but it’s recent popularity is definitely the result of the Irish name trend.
Well, [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] HAS been rising in the US, but not as fast as you would think. When “Tangled” came out, it entered the charts and has jumped about 300 spots in 5 years. However, [name_m]Fin[/name_m] and fin-names have been rising steadily for a while.
I would say that if [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] were to crack the top 200 it wouldn’t be for a while.
I personally prefer [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] to almost all fin-names (except [name_m]Fintan[/name_m]). So, I approve and think it’s a great choice for you.
(if it helps, phlegm never entered my mind… [name_m]Errol[/name_m] [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] did though!)
I think it’s a great name, and definitely distinct from [name_u]Finn[/name_u] (as well as nothing like phlegm, imo!). I do however see it climbing the charts, maybe not top 100, but top 200 is a definite possibility. Celebrities having used it for their kids definitely helps, but it also fits the bill of what’s in right now.
I love [name_u]Flynn[/name_u]. I do think it is different enough from [name_u]Finn[/name_u]. It’s so hard to predict popularity…it may reach the top 200 someday, but not immediately if it does.
I did know it was the name of a Tangled character but that doesn’t bother me – I think it’s cute and Tangled, while popular, is [name_m]WAY[/name_m] less popular than some other Disney movies, so I don’t consider the names from it ubiquitous (i.e. [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] and [name_f]Anna[/name_f] – I love the name [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] but would NEVER use it now, sadly!).
Celebrity kids to spring to mind – I know [name_m]Orlando[/name_m] Bloom and [name_f]Miranda[/name_f] [name_u]Kerr[/name_u] have a son named [name_u]Flynn[/name_u]. In any case, I think I’ll keep it on our list, if not in the top spot. If baby happens to really look like a [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] when he pops out, then that’s what we’ll go with!
Resurrecting this thread bc [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] has recently moved to the top of our list… We’re considering [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] [name_m]Edward[/name_m] [name_u]Elliot[/name_u]. Anyway interested to hear more opinions on [name_u]Flynn[/name_u]'s trendy quotient and opinions in general on the name!
I love [name_u]Finn[/name_u], [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m], [name_u]Finley[/name_u], [name_m]Finnick[/name_m], [name_m]Griffin[/name_m], etc. I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the name [name_u]Finn[/name_u] but popularity really bothers me so I most likely won’t use it. I also love [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] and I know it’s gaining popularity but I don’t think I’d consider it trendy. I think [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] [name_m]Edward[/name_m] [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] is a charming combo!
I definitely don’t think it’s too trendy or close to [name_u]Finn[/name_u] and [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] [name_m]Edward[/name_m] [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] is a great combo. My husband wants to use [name_u]Flynn[/name_u], but our last name is too close to [name_m]Rider[/name_m], so I refuse because it will sound too much like the Tangled character.
I think [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] and [name_u]Finn[/name_u] are two totally separate names. I do not find them all that similar and can easily differentiate between them. Further, I much prefer [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] to [name_u]Finn[/name_u]. I don’t think [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] is going to get too trendy or popular, even though it’s popularity is going up, I don’t see it exploding any time soon. It would be a fine, solid choice.
It’s also known Breaking Bad name. I know it gained some popularity because of that but I do not consider this a trendy name whatsoever. I rarely see it mentioned on name forums and never hear it [name_m]IRL[/name_m]. I think it’s absolutely distinct from [name_u]Finn[/name_u]. Totally different.
