If you live in [name_f]Russia[/name_f] or an English speaking country, choose [name_f]Yulia[/name_f] (my pick).

I know other countries in Europe (eg Germany and Scandinavia) pronounce their j’s as y’s so Julia would be acceptable in those places.

Very few people would get [name_f]Iulia[/name_f] correct.

Everyone would think [name_f]Julia[/name_f] is the regular [name_f]Julia[/name_f]. [name_f]Iulia[/name_f] would be ok if you like that better (I do) but most people wouldn’t get it outside of Nameberry. [name_f]Yulia[/name_f] is the best choice for a real kid but since it isn’t, [name_f]Iulia[/name_f] is the best.

Since in [name_m]Britain[/name_m] 99% of people will pronounce [name_f]Julia[/name_f] with the English J sound, [name_f]Yulia[/name_f] seems the best choice to me. I do like the look of [name_f]Iulia[/name_f], but I think people outside of Romania/Moldova aren’t going to know what to make of it.

My friend from Bulgaria pronounces her name like that and she spells it [name_f]Yulia[/name_f]. I honestly think that’s your best bet if you live in an English speaking country, because it’s phonetic and still easily recognizable. If you use [name_f]Julia[/name_f], you run the risk of people pronouncing it with a hard J sound, and I don’t think most English speakers would recognize [name_f]Iulia[/name_f] at all.

Also, Spanish speaking countries are prone to pronounce [name_f]Julia[/name_f] more like Hoo-lee-uh. I would still go with [name_f]Yulia[/name_f] even if you do live in a non-English speaking country.

I have a Romanian American coworker named [name_f]Iulia[/name_f]. Pronounced YOO-lee-ah. Nobody has any trouble with it, and I’m pretty sure I had it figured out before I met her, but others, I’m not so sure. It was pretty much just the managers introducing her as [name_f]Iulia[/name_f], and everyone followed suit. I love [name_f]Julia[/name_f], but would say it JOO-lee-ah. [name_f]Yulia[/name_f] is nice, as well, but [name_f]Iulia[/name_f] is more familiar to me, so that’s what I prefer (I think!). All three are really lovely, although I agree it would be a HOO- beginning for [name_f]Julia[/name_f] in Spanish, not YOO-, although I think it would be in [name_m]German[/name_m] (and Germanic languages?). I’ve known several Russians who are [name_f]Julia[/name_f]–one said with the JOO beginning, and the other with the YOO- one. I think [name_f]Yulia[/name_f] or [name_f]Iulia[/name_f] would be easiest to get the pronunciation you want.

Good luck!

If I lived in [name_f]Russia[/name_f] I’d spell it Юли”.

If it helps, this is for a middle name. I’m happy to hear people don’t struggle saying [name_f]Iulia[/name_f]. To me, [name_f]Yulia[/name_f] has always just felt like a transcription of Юли” rather than a separate name.

Thank you all!

If I heard this name in an English speaking country, I’d assume it was spelled [name_f]Eulia[/name_f], which wasn’t a choice :frowning:

Oops! I accidentally voted for the wrong option–[name_f]Julia[/name_f]. If you are going to pronounce it too-lee-ah, I would spell it [name_f]Yulia[/name_f].

Thank you for the suggestion! Sorry, it never occurred to me.

I prefer [name_f]Iulia[/name_f] but I think most people will understand [name_f]Yulia[/name_f] the best with your pronunciation.
