For Zelda's sister - your opinion on our shortlist?

Context: We live in [name_m]French[/name_m]-speaking Québec, my partner speaks Spanish and our daughters (will) have a Spanish last name, we speak [name_m]French[/name_m], Spanish and English at home.

Our shortlist at the moment and their 'but’s…

[name_f]Frida[/name_f] - the frontrunner at the moment, but I’ve always said I wouldn’t give rhyming name to siblings… what do you think? is it cutesy? are they too similar?

[name_m]Sol[/name_m] - close second, but in the Spanish-speaking world, it’s the nickname for [name_f]Soledad[/name_f], so I’m worried it would be seen as incomplete, thin. Also in [name_m]French[/name_m] and English, it tends to be seen as more masculine.

[name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] - an old love of mine, but it doesn’t quite flow as well in [name_m]French[/name_m] as it does in English, which bugs me a bit.

[name_f]Juno[/name_f] - a new addition I can’t get out of my head, but it would mean using the English pronunciation even when speaking [name_m]French[/name_m] and Spanish to her - I always said I’d only choose names that could be seamlessly pronounced in our 3 languages.

[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] - another newbie. I love it and surprisingly so does my partner, but like [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] it doesn’t flow quite as well in [name_m]French[/name_m].

[name_m]Feel[/name_m] free to make suggestions if our list inspires you. :slight_smile:

Thank you!

I love [name_m]Sol[/name_m] and [name_f]Juno[/name_f]! [name_f]Frida[/name_f] might be too similar with sister [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] but I do like it. [name_m]Sol[/name_m], [name_f]Juno[/name_f], and [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] all go the best with [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]. Again, [name_f]Frida[/name_f] is too close in my opinion and I think [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] is too different from [name_f]Zelda[/name_f].

I really like [name_f]Frida[/name_f] with [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]! [name_m]Even[/name_m] though they both end in the “da” sound, the beginning sounds are so different that the names feel very distinctive to my ears.

Hello, and congrats! My favorite, hands down, is [name_f]Frida[/name_f]. I don’t think it’s frilly at all: I find it strong, distinctive, and artistic.

[name_f]Soleil[/name_f]: This was my first thought for you. [name_m]Sol[/name_m] is the first syllable, which has a really bold, dynamic sound. However, you have a preference for longer names, and this one adds a syllable that reminds me a lot of [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f].

[name_f]India[/name_f]

[name_f]Zelda[/name_f] and [name_f]Frida[/name_f] or [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] and [name_f]Juno[/name_f] are fantastic!

Zelda is fabulous and Frida and Juno would make a stunning sibset.

What about Soleil “Sol” ?

[name_f]Frida[/name_f] or [name_f]Juno[/name_f]!

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.

This is tricky! Here are my thoughts:

[name_f]Frida[/name_f]-I think this is perfect w/[name_f]Zelda[/name_f]. It fits, but isn’t overly matching in my opinion.

[name_m]Sol[/name_m]-I definitely see this as a boy name. What about [name_f]Soleil[/name_f]? That’s gorgeous, & you could use the [name_m]Sol[/name_m] nn.

[name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]-I love this, but if it doesn’t work in [name_m]French[/name_m], you may be asking for trouble.

[name_f]Juno[/name_f]-Hm. Super sweet, but the whole ‘J’ being said differently in Spanish could get weird.

[name_f]Winifred[/name_f]-I don’t love it, although I adore the nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]. [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] just sounds frumpy to me. It must be the ‘fred’ part.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps. :slight_smile:

I adore [name_f]Frida[/name_f] and don’t think it’s too similar to [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] at all; I also love [name_f]Juno[/name_f].

[name_f]Agatha[/name_f]
[name_f]Anouk[/name_f]
[name_f]Petra[/name_f]

I think [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] and [name_f]Frida[/name_f] would make an absolutely gorgeous sibset, and I like [name_f]Juno[/name_f] with [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] too. Your entire short list is really lovely.

My favorite is [name_f]Frida[/name_f]! Such a great name and it goes really well with [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], it’s not too matchy at all.

I don’t think it’s cutesy, actually for me [name_f]Frida[/name_f] is a bit like [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] on that matter; feminine but not frilly and a bit spunky and cool.

[name_f]Frida[/name_f] and [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] are two of my favorite names. I personally wouldn’t use [name_f]Frida[/name_f] if I already had a [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], but I also wouldn’t think it’s a terrible choice if someone else decided to…
I think [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] is perfect. Different enough to be distinctive, bit so different it’s jarring. And it’s such a beautiful name. It’s normal to prefer it’s pronunciation in 1 language over another but I think it’s nice it can be applied to all the languages spoken in your house.
I find [name_m]Sol[/name_m] very masculine and [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] is a name that just has never appealed to me much. But I do think [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] is pretty with [name_f]Zelda[/name_f].
[name_f]Juno[/name_f] is probably my 2nd choice. But if you pronounce [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]'s name in different languages it does bug me that [name_f]Juno[/name_f] would only get one pronunciation across 3 languages. Still, it’s a spunky, feisty choice to match [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]. Good luck.

Oh thanks so much for your replies!

A few of you mentioned [name_f]Soleil[/name_f] as an alternative for [name_m]Sol[/name_m]. Because we live in a [name_m]French[/name_m]-speaking community, I think it’s connotated differently here, like extra-extra-hippie. ^^

So many beautiful suggestions - I’m surprised how many of you actually found names that were on our longer list, you “read” our style very well!

@babies123456
[name_f]Cecily[/name_f] doesn’t work in [name_m]French[/name_m] and Spanish as much but I’ve always thought it was lovely.
[name_f]Nova[/name_f] would be on our list but really doesn’t work with the last name, sadly!

@minkling
[name_f]Greta[/name_f] is striking, I’ve thought about it. It has a similar feel to [name_f]Frida[/name_f] for me. I would consider it if it wasn’t for the [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation.
[name_f]Cleo[/name_f] I really like too, it was on an early list of mine. I think what’s not quite right for me is that it sounds like a lot of popular names at the moment, and I guess I like a bit of an offbeat choice.

@danakatherine
[name_f]Agata[/name_f] I love. It has come in and out of our list in the last weeks; my partner is not sure of the “gata” bit (cat in Spanish). Maybe I should insist! hehe
[name_u]Indigo[/name_u] I’ve been fascinated with for a while, but I can’t quite get to the place of considering it, like it’s not quite an actual, possible name in my head yet. It also doesn’t sound as great in [name_m]French[/name_m].

@wilkie8709
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] was on our list until recently - the [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation once again dissuaded us. Absolutely gorgeous name.
[name_f]Serafina[/name_f] comes to my mind once in a while, I really like it. But my name is [name_f]Sarah[/name_f], so it feels a bit too close.
[name_f]Esme[/name_f] I adore, it was on my list before my partner got to it :stuck_out_tongue:
[name_f]Lux[/name_f] not so much but it reminds me of [name_f]Luz[/name_f] I really like. Doesn’t work in [name_m]French[/name_m] unfortunately.
[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] was on my list also. Here the problem is the last name that starts in “N-”, the “nd-N” doesn’t flow.
[name_f]Leona[/name_f] is very pretty, I’ll bring it up to my partner.

@michellem
Thank you for taking the time to review every idea - it helps a lot. [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] is definitely pronounceable in [name_m]French[/name_m], it’s just that [name_m]French[/name_m] 'R’s are much “dryer” or “stiffer”, I’m not sure how to describe it, and so names tend to lose some of their charm in translation. In the case of [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f], though, apparently not enough for me to get it out of my head!

From your suggestions I quite like [name_f]Beatriz[/name_f], the subtle link of the 'Z’s between sisters is appealing to me. It would constantly need to be spelled here though, people would hear and write Béatrice automatically.
[name_f]Freya[/name_f] is very pretty and strong, not ideal in [name_m]French[/name_m] unfortunately because of sound-alike words.
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] is beautiful, but not great in [name_m]French[/name_m] either unfortunately (“en solde” is [name_m]French[/name_m] for something being “discounted”).

@lunette
[name_f]Agatha[/name_f] (spelled [name_f]Agata[/name_f]) has come in and out of our list in the last weeks. I really like it, but my partner is not sure of the “gata” bit (cat in Spanish). I would go for the Spanish-friendly spelling for the sake of harmony with the last name, but it does mean the English pronunciation changes, and I miss the soft “th” a little.
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] is beautiful, but not great in [name_m]French[/name_m] unfortunately (“en solde” is [name_m]French[/name_m] for something being “discounted”).

@books_and_tea
Thank you! It seems [name_f]Frida[/name_f] and [name_f]Juno[/name_f] are distinct favorites on this thread, interesting!

@llbaby22
Thank you! It’s nice to read enthusiasm for [name_f]Winifred[/name_f]. :slight_smile: There’s something witchy about both [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] and [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] in my mind, I think that’s why I see them make a good pair.

I really like [name_f]Frida[/name_f], it seems like the natural choice for you. Personally, I don’t see it as too similar to [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]. The only similarity is they both end in -da. Sure, there might be some instances where you call for one of your daughters and they both come because they only heard the “da”, but I don’t think the two names are dysfunctionally similar by any means.

I also think [name_f]Frida[/name_f] complements [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] very well. They have the same bold, slightly clunky yet fashionable style.

My second choice would be [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f], as it also pairs nicely style wise with [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]. But I think [name_f]Frida[/name_f] is really a gem and you should roll with it!

I would love to see [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] or [name_f]Frida[/name_f] with [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Solene[/name_f] as a longer form for [name_m]Sol[/name_m]? or the scandi [name_f]Solveig[/name_f]?

Some more suggestions I love with [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]:

[name_f]Zelda[/name_f] & [name_f]Odette[/name_f] <3 <3

Zelda & Inez

Zelda & Rosalba

Zelda & Astrid

Zelda & Eliza

Zelda & Lucia

Zelda & Luna

Zelda & Jade

Zelda & Edith

Zelda & Freya

Ok so I actually really love [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] with [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]. It’s a new one that’s been on my radar too. I love it as a whole name, I also love nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f], [name_u]Freddie[/name_u], I think even [name_f]Frida[/name_f] could be stretched out of. [name_f]Freida[/name_f] (this spelling but [name_f]Frida[/name_f] is nice too). It does end in Da so slightly much for me but definitely not a deal breaker…it’s not like they rhyme. I second the [name_f]Inez[/name_f] suggestion as I like it in ENGLISH and Spanish, but I’m not sure how it works in [name_m]French[/name_m].

I like [name_f]Frida[/name_f] with [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]. [name_f]Juno[/name_f] is the second runner up for me.

For what it’s worth, my girls are [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] and [name_f]Jemima[/name_f], which don’t really rhyme. [name_f]Frida[/name_f] and [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] don’t sound rhyme-y to me because of their different first syllables.

[name_f]Susan[/name_f]

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there,

I live in the US and my good friend’s daughters are named [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] and [name_f]Ramona[/name_f]. :slight_smile:

From your list, I do like [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] and [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] (with previous poster’s suggestion of [name_f]Frida[/name_f] as a nickname - brilliant!).

I also adore another pp suggestion of [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] and [name_f]Saskia[/name_f] - a perfectly spunky and bright sib set!

Good luck!
[name_f]Jenn[/name_f]

I have to agree with most here that [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] and [name_f]Frida[/name_f] make a stunning set! Both fresh, funky, feisty and feminine.

My other favourites from your list are [name_f]Juno[/name_f] (I have one!) and [name_m]Sol[/name_m] (on my list too — I think it’s fabulously bright and sunny for either sex).

I also adore the [name_f]Saskia[/name_f] suggestion, as well as [name_f]Greta[/name_f], [name_f]Astrid[/name_f], [name_f]Ramona[/name_f], [name_f]Inez[/name_f], [name_f]Beatriz[/name_f], [name_f]Gaia[/name_f], [name_f]Cleo[/name_f], [name_f]Oona[/name_f] and many others.
