Forbidden Lily

[name_f]Lily[/name_f] has been for many years one of my favourites for a real-life child (as opposed to my guilty pleasures which I discuss way more on the boards) but it’s unfortunately the name of my partner’s ex, so if I have children with him I can never use it :sob:

I am struggling to come up with an alternative for [name_f]Lily[/name_f] that I love.

Here’s what I like about [name_f]Lily[/name_f] :white_heart:

  • classic, timeless, ageless, and won’t date
  • cute and elegant at the same time
  • looks pretty when written down and sounds nice when spoken
  • common enough to provide internet anonymity (important for me for an actual child)
  • easy to spell and pronounce
  • crisp and clear kind of vibe… hard to explain? haha
  • feminine and lyrical
  • beautiful meaning / association (such a gorgeous flower)

I’ve also for many years used [name_f]Lily[/name_f] as a ‘fake’ name when meeting strangers in a bar or ordering starbucks etc., and it always gets a positive reaction. I feel like I’ve worn the name myself and I know from experience it’s a good one to have.

I fear there’s no name that can match up to it! But it’s 10000% off the cards for me and my partner. Help me berries! What alternatives to [name_f]Lily[/name_f] would you suggest?

For some more unexpected alternatives, here are the other names I can remember my parents were considering for me before they named me [name_f]Lily[/name_f]

[name_u]Ariel[/name_u]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Ariana[/name_f]
[name_u]Ivy[/name_u]

When I was little, I would have liked to been named [name_f]Zoey[/name_f] or [name_f]Stella[/name_f]. Both feel spunky, which [name_f]Lily[/name_f] feels to me, although I think that may just be personal bias lol.

Are names with the [name_f]Lily[/name_f] sound in it not an option?

[name_f]Lily[/name_f] is my favorite name.

I think you could still use it as the memories of the ex will fade and in the end no one will think you named your daughter after her. You could also change the spelling to [name_f]Lillie[/name_f] or [name_f]Lili[/name_f] so it won’t be so obvious. But if you don’t want to I understand. [name_f]Do[/name_f] what feels right for you and your partner. I’ll try to list many names that I love because as we both love [name_f]Lily[/name_f] we might have a similar style.

I really love [name_f]Lilou[/name_f] and I think it’s quite similar to [name_f]Lily[/name_f] as well as being a combination of [name_f]Lily[/name_f] and [name_u]Louise[/name_u].

[name_u]Or[/name_u] you could use: [name_f]Lilia[/name_f], [name_f]Liliana[/name_f], [name_f]Liliane[/name_f], [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], [name_f]Lilwenn[/name_f], [name_f]Lilouenn[/name_f].

To answer some of your concerns:

Most names will date. [name_f]Lily[/name_f] will too and so will [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] and other names that are popular now. These names were really unfashionable between about 1950 and 1990 and they will be unfashionable again. It is pretty much impossible to find a name that won’t date unless you go for uncommon or for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] (even though that is falling so might sound dated in the future). But I don’t think it’s a terrible thing at all!

I would also consider the internet anonymity issue. No one is really anonymous on the internet if they choose to upload information. It is an illusion. Much better to teach her how to be responsible than to reject a name just for this reason. I have an uncommon name and ask to be listed with my first initial and surname and everyone has respected my wishes. It is really not possible to be anonymous on the internet, if someone wants to find you they will, especially with the new features like image search etc. I learned about this in class. Creepy, I know, I am scared too, but true! I know it’s scary but a common name won’t change this.

I feel like people will react positively to most names. [name_f]Lily[/name_f] sure is a nice name to have, I agree as it’s my favorite. But people will hardly ever not be nice in order to be polite. When I worked in a cafe back in the day as a student I also would have reacted in a nice way if the name had been [name_f]Fanny[/name_f]. So I wouldn’t put too much of an emphasis on this. People’s opinion can change easily. [name_f]Pretty[/name_f] sure 20 years ago most people thought that [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] and [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] were hideous but now they’re cool again. The important thing is that you love it!

I’ll give my best:

[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Opal[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Rose[/name_f]

I wish you all the best and many blessings and I hope you find the perfect name for her

That’s devastating :sob:

[name_f]My[/name_f] first thought was [name_f]Calla[/name_f]! Kind of a little tie to [name_f]Lily[/name_f] without being [name_f]Lily[/name_f]. And [name_f]Calla[/name_f] still has that soft, lyrical, feminine sound. :white_heart:

I also like the suggestions of [name_f]Stella[/name_f], [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] and [name_f]Opal[/name_f]. They all have the same feel too with beautiful meanings!

I don’t think anyone has said [name_f]Nola[/name_f], [name_u]Alma[/name_u], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_f]Vera[/name_f], [name_u]Celeste[/name_u], or [name_f]Nina[/name_f] yet.

Ik exactly what you mean. What I also like about [name_f]Lily[/name_f] is that you never get the sense that it’s short for something, even though it’s short and sweet.

Also two people said [name_f]Calla[/name_f] above. Back this enormously. The lyrical Ls carry through and you still have the floral association.
