I forgot [name_m]Stanford[/name_m] and [name_m]Stafford[/name_m]!

While I doubt I would name my son one of these names, there are two things I find appealing about them.

One, they sound solid. [name_m]Rock[/name_m] of Gibraltar solid. Isn’t Hartford even an insurance company? There is something sturdy and dependable about such names, unlike say, [name_u]Blue[/name_u] or [name_m]Hogan[/name_m] or [name_m]Zeke[/name_m]. Sure, they sound collegiate ([name_m]Oxford[/name_m], [name_m]Stanford[/name_m]) or literary ([name_m]Stafford[/name_m]) or English ([name_m]Milford[/name_m], Mitford), but there is a substance to them, a bankerish quality which is not the worst thing for a name (particularly a middle name) to possess.

Such a name could moor a wilder companion name. Think [name_u]Zaire[/name_u] [name_m]Rutherford[/name_m] or [name_m]Stafford[/name_m] [name_u]Tangier[/name_u].

Two, there are some great nicknames embedded here: [name_m]Ford[/name_m] mostly, but also [name_m]Hart[/name_m], Mit, [name_m]Cliff[/name_m], [name_m]Brad[/name_m], [name_u]Sandy[/name_u], [name_m]Stan[/name_m], [name_m]Rock[/name_m] or [name_m]Roc[/name_m] or [name_m]Rocky[/name_m], even the leap to [name_m]Edsel[/name_m] (I may be alone in loving that one!).

I went with Hartford because I like nn [name_m]Hart[/name_m]. I wouldn’t use [name_m]Bradford[/name_m]. I’m from the UK and [name_m]Bradford[/name_m] is a city you definitely wouldn’t want to name a child for.

My vote went to the names that wouldn’t sound silly if the “[name_m]Ford[/name_m]” was removed… so [name_m]Redford[/name_m], [name_m]Clifford[/name_m] and Hartford were my top choices, [name_m]BEDford[/name_m] and [name_m]OXford[/name_m] are my least favourite.

Makes sense. That’s the advantage of using them as middles - few of us get nicknamed from our middles. For me, [name_m]Bedford[/name_m] is a not-so guilty pleasure due to my love of It’s a Wonderful Life and [name_m]Bedford[/name_m] Falls - and I think a great dog name! Only a dog would like being nicknamed Beddy or Bedster!

The only one of those I would use would be [name_m]Redford[/name_m], because he could go by [name_u]Red[/name_u], which is pretty cool.

I know a [name_m]Redmond[/name_m] that goes by [name_u]Red[/name_u] and I think its super cute. [name_m]Redford[/name_m] nn [name_u]Red[/name_u] is great.

[name_m]Bradford[/name_m] is the only one I truly like. I’m intrigued by just [name_m]Ford[/name_m] and want to like it, but I’m rather “meh”. I also love [name_f]Fjord[/name_f] for a middle, but I guess that’s technically not a [name_m]Ford[/name_m] name. I also like [name_m]Edsel[/name_m] a lot.

Hartford and [name_m]Ford[/name_m]

[name_f]Fjord[/name_f] is lovely, though I prefer it for a girl. [name_f]Gladys[/name_f] [name_f]Fjord[/name_f] I love! [name_f]Glad[/name_f] to know there’s at least one other [name_m]Edsel[/name_m]-lover out there!

PS I also forgot Rexford and Wexford. I love the nn or short name Rex.
