Former name obsessions

I used to keep lists of my favorite names in this book of names I found on the street (I still love that thing), and I felt like sharing them because they are relatively different than what I like now. And please keep in mind I was 10, forced myself to do every letter until I gave up, and occasionally made up names.

[name_m]Feel[/name_m] free to share some of your childhood names!

I would always make lists of names for each letter. I remember putting [name_f]Rena[/name_f] for R and [name_f]Della[/name_f] for D a lot. I also remember putting [name_f]Queenie[/name_f] for Q and [name_f]Xena[/name_f] for X. I may have put [name_f]Freya[/name_f] for F.

I used to be obsessed with the name [name_f]Peggy[/name_f] because of [name_f]Peggy[/name_f] [name_m]Parish[/name_m], the author of [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] [name_f]Bedelia[/name_f] books. Later I was obsessed with [name_u]Kyle[/name_u] because of a character in a cartoon, and I wanted to be named [name_f]Gretchen[/name_f] because of two cartoon characters. At one point I saw Tootsie used as a name in a book of idioms and decided to use it for hypothetical scenarios myself. And a few years back when I was really into Wheel of [name_u]Fortune[/name_u] I loved the names [name_u]Pat[/name_u] and [name_f]Vanna[/name_f].

When I was VERY little, I named all my dolls Mama because I did not know any other names.

Later I liked very classic and common names. At age 5 I wanted my baby sister to be [name_f]Katie[/name_f] or [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] (she says she’s thankful that wasn’t my decision because she thinks those are boring names) and my dolls were [name_f]Katie[/name_f] and [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f].

My teenage style was very biblical: [name_f]Joanna[/name_f], [name_f]Miriam[/name_f], [name_m]Caleb[/name_m], and [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] were my favorites.

Later I liked unusual names to get to common nicknames, like [name_f]Emerald[/name_f] for [name_f]Emma[/name_f].

Lily and [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] - I still really like [name_f]Lily[/name_f] but it’s just too popular to use as a first name, which is a shame as it’s a family name. [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] feels very dated to me now (I liked it in the 00s)

Cassie/Cassandra- I still like it but it’s a bit dull in comparison to other names I like, and [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] seems dated and too closely linked to Only Fool’s and Horses. I updated it to [name_f]Cassia[/name_f], which seems a bit fresher.

Theodora - i actually really liked this until recently. I really love the name [name_f]Thea[/name_f] but thought it looked incomplete so adopted [name_f]Theodora[/name_f]. But in hindsight it’s really clunky sounding & old fashioned.
