I need your help! We are expecting and we want to honor our parents and I have a way to honor three of them but not the mother in law! Her name is [name_f]Molly[/name_f] and thats so difficult for me to fit into a middle name and I don’t like it for a first name!! Help me!! We really like feminine southern names and have zeroed in on [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f], [name_f]Tessa[/name_f], [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] or [name_m]Shephard[/name_m], [name_m]Rhett[/name_m], [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m]… So we’d like names that go with names like that. ALSO if you have suggestions for first names along those lines feel free!!
[name_f]Molly[/name_f] is a diminutive of [name_f]Mary[/name_f], so I think any [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-name could be used to honor her.
There’s a ton of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] variations there. You could also use her maiden name, which is a very Southern tradition.
[name_f]Molly[/name_f] is a nickname for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], so how about that, or [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f]?
[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]?
Like @tuppence42 said [name_f]Molly[/name_f] is a nickname for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], and [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] is very similar to [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] and other [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] derivatives ([name_f]Megan[/name_f], [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] etc…). It is also a flower name like [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] and a feminine name very evocative of the South.
Too bad you don’t like [name_f]Molly[/name_f]. I love it! I agree that [name_f]Mary[/name_f] or [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] would work.
There are hundreds of forms of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], so I’m afraid you have a lot to consider! If you just want to consider diminutives of them, like [name_f]Molly[/name_f], then you have:
[name_f]Maggie[/name_f]
[name_f]Maisie[/name_f]
[name_f]Polly[/name_f]
[name_f]Peggy[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Margo[/name_f]
[name_f]Megan[/name_f]
[name_f]Mae[/name_f]
[name_u]Marion[/name_u]
[name_f]Margery[/name_f]
Personally, I see [name_f]Molly[/name_f] as more of a [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-based name then a [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]-name - although it certainly has a long history as a nickname of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] as well.
Of course, I’m a [name_f]Molly[/name_f] myself so I’m a little biased towards just using that
I know a family whose little [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] goes by [name_f]Molly[/name_f], so that’s a way to get the [name_f]Molly[/name_f] sound without using the name itself.
