Frances or Francesca?

My DH and I have absolutely fallen in love with the name [name_f]Mae[/name_f] (we’re not TTC for a few more months, but I’m a definite planner). It was his grandmother’s name, it fits my naming style and it’s not overly popular in our area. His other grandmother was named [name_f]Frances[/name_f], and my grandfather’s middle name was [name_m]Francesco[/name_m], so we’d like to use a form of that as a middle name for [name_f]Mae[/name_f].

We can’t decide between [name_f]Mae[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f] and [name_f]Mae[/name_f] [name_f]Francesca[/name_f]! Would love some opinions! (Last name rhymes with Dimmer)

[name_f]May[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f] is on my list of possibilities too, and I do prefer [name_f]Frances[/name_f]. The combo sounds quaint and sweet. [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] is pretty too!

Personally I think that [name_f]Mae[/name_f] [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] is the cuter of the two combos.

I prefer [name_f]Francesca[/name_f]

[name_f]Mae[/name_f] [name_f]Francesca[/name_f]!

Oh, [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] by far! [name_f]Frances[/name_f] sounds nasally to me, but [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] is very pretty!

[name_f]Mae[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f] has an old fashioned charm, and [name_f]Mae[/name_f] [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] sounds frilly and elaborate. I don’t think you could go wrong with either choice!

I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Mae[/name_f] [name_f]Francesca[/name_f]. It’s beautiful!

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] @lissylou,

My personal choice would be [name_f]Mae[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f] {nickname [name_u]Frannie[/name_u] [name_f]Mae[/name_f] :)?} for maximum vintage charm.

[name_f]Mae[/name_f] [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] is my favorite, too. It’s a perfect balance in regards to their lengths and simplicity.

Another [name_f]Mae[/name_f] [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] -[name_f]Frances[/name_f] is really fine but [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] is more than a frilly name -it has heritage, standing-I don’t know what word I want, in the U.K and [name_f]Italy[/name_f] for generations. [name_m]Author[/name_m], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] Wilde, a favorite of mine, of satire, anyway- his mother was also writer, Lady [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] Wilde- love that name, sounds very like [name_f]Mae[/name_f] [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] and [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] will be our daughter’s ( due Dec.) 2nd name. I’m a tad biased. Best wishes.

I love both equally, although [name_f]Mae[/name_f] [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] has an added bit of whimsy that the traditional [name_f]Mae[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f] doesn’t. Perhaps that is a +1 for [name_f]Mae[/name_f] [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] to you?

[name_f]Mae[/name_f] [name_f]Francesca[/name_f], definitely.

I prefer [name_f]Francesca[/name_f]

[name_f]Francesca[/name_f] definitely

I prefer [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] over [name_f]Frances[/name_f] however [name_f]Mae[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f] is a sweet combo, all in all I would say [name_f]Mae[/name_f] [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] although you can’t go wrong with either

Thanks for the feedback! I tend to lean more towards [name_f]Mae[/name_f] [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] myself because [name_f]Frances[/name_f] ends with the same sound out last name begins with. It’s not super obvious since you don’t use the middle name all the time.
(And also, I love that its the female form of my grandfather’s middle name - I just found that out last week! I love the idea of honoring 3 of our grandparents with 1 child’s name. :))
