Thoughts please! Leaning towards [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] for our boys name (sister’s name is [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] NN [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]). I adore [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] in full (which we’ll try to hold on to as long as we can) but concerned with NN [name_m]Fred[/name_m]/[name_u]Freddie[/name_u], not a fan. Therefore thinking of going with [name_m]Fritz[/name_m] as a nn. [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] feels the most classic + chic yet also a lovely throwback. And [name_m]Fritz[/name_m] feels a bit more youthful but also fresh and good for a younger kiddo. We live in the US so we understand this choice could be a bit polarizing but it’s our favorite. Any thoughts on [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] nn [name_m]Fritz[/name_m]? I really don’t want him to feel we gave him a stale / outdated name when he’s older. Thanks!
I love [name_m]Frederic[/name_m], [name_m]Fred[/name_m], [name_u]Freddie[/name_u], [name_m]Fritz[/name_m], all of them!
I can see that you might go with [name_m]Fritz[/name_m] to ward off [name_m]Fred[/name_m] or [name_u]Freddie[/name_u].
An awful lot of kids these days start out as [name_u]James[/name_u] and stay [name_u]James[/name_u]. The thing with [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] is that it is only human with a friend or co-worker, etc. to occasionally shorten their name. [name_m]Hence[/name_m] while my nickname has never been [name_u]Les[/name_u], I do end up getting called it at times by people who like me well enough to do so.
I can’t see anything polarizing about [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] or [name_m]Fritz[/name_m]. [name_m]Adolph[/name_m] or Meat Cleaver, yes, but [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] and [name_m]Fritz[/name_m] are hardly psycho names!
I love [name_m]Frederic[/name_m]! My recent obsession. Also not a fan of [name_m]Fred[/name_m], though I have a soft spot for [name_u]Freddie[/name_u] because of [name_u]Mercury[/name_u]. Among all diminutives, I like [name_m]Fritz[/name_m] the most and would use it myself if I ever had a [name_m]Frederic[/name_m].
Thanks all! Feeling better about it! And thoughts on how a teenager, young man could take this name? I have no idea! I love it but don’t want him to feel its stale / old fashioned when he’s a teenager? Hoping [name_m]Fritz[/name_m] fixes that as a hipper + younger alternative, but really just don’t want him to dislike the name we give him.
I think a teenager or a young man would love to be [name_m]Fritz[/name_m]. It’s a little edgy and rock and roll. And then if he decides he needs to be more buttoned up, he can go back to [name_m]Frederick[/name_m].
As someone who never shortens their name, I get it. Other people’s urge to nickname is strong. But coming up with a nickname you like/love, even if it’s not the one that people are used to, I think is a great way to please those outsiders. Great choice.
I think it’s great! I prefer [name_m]Fritz[/name_m] over [name_m]Fred[/name_m]. I’m in the US too, and I think it’s great! Nice way to update a classic.
I love it! [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] with nn [name_m]Fritz[/name_m] is actually our front runner if this baby ends up being a boy.
As for wearability, I don’t know where in the US you are, but up here I’ve come across two little boys named [name_m]Fritz[/name_m] (one is [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] and the other [name_m]Friedrich[/name_m]) and they are both adorable! I think the name is catching on as a more wearable vintage name.
I hate to throw a fly in the ointment, but I don’t like [name_m]Fritz[/name_m]. [name_m]Fritz[/name_m] was a name given to Nazi Germany troops by the British and others in the Second World War, and I just can’t overlook this association.
[name_m]Just[/name_m] FYI, there is a bedding company called [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] & [name_m]Fritz[/name_m].
Haha! that’s kind of hilarious actually. Doesn’t really bother me though, never heard of it and seems obscure enough. Thanks for the callout though.
I looove [name_m]Fritz[/name_m]! So adorable.
[name_m]Fritz[/name_m] is a great nickname! I feel like it would definitely stick. I agree with the above poster that a teenager is likely to really vibe on this nickname.
I named a dog [name_m]Fritz[/name_m]/ Fritzy in [name_f]England[/name_f] back in 91 (my childhood doggy) and came across no issue wrt to word for Germans. Obviously had to call it out lots and lots.
