Frederick/Frederic - weird without the accents?

We are due any day, and if baby is a boy his name will be Frederick or Frederic. I’m stuck on the spelling. We are Canadian, but Anglo and our daughter has a French name (Delphine). I find the spelling without the k cleaner and visually more appealing, but I do think there’s a benefit to having the most common spelling of a name (Frederick where we live). I’m not hugely swayed either way. Also, is it weird to spell it Frederic (French version of the name) but leave out the accents on the e? We definitely will not use accents if we go with that spelling. Would appreciate everyone’s thoughts!

I really like Frederic! I think it goes slightly better with [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] than [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] does, as it is more French. despite the lack of accents. I agree it’s more visually appealing, and I don’t see any issue with leaving the accents out!

I love [name_m]Frederic[/name_m], especially with this spelling! As someone whose name is [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], I understand your concern of using the less common spelling. However, if [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] is the spelling you love, you should definitely use it! I’d much rather say “Catherine with a C” than be Katherine.

Also I agree that [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] goes better with Delphine. I don’t think it’s a big deal to use this spelling but not the accent marks. Then again, I’m from the US, so it’s not uncommon to use names from different cultures and modernize them. If you live in a heavily French-speaking area, it might confuse some, but I don’t think it’s a big enough deal to not use the name and spelling you love. Plus [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] and [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] are just perfect together!

Personally, [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] is my preferred spelling of the name, and I think it works perfectly fine without the accents. Besides, the name is great and works perfectly with Delphine!

I prefer Frederick.

I usually prefer [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], but [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] is wonderfully dashing with [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] and I don’t think leaving out the accents is an issue at all.

If it isn’t the most common spelling where you live, you are likely to get some misspellings or need to clarify, so I suppose you have to consider if that’s worth it for the spelling you prefer.

Because I realise that’s not a helpful answer at all  I will also add that if it were me, I’d go with [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] — it’s perfect with [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] and sounds like your favourite.

I think [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] is lovely with [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] and I’d say it’s fine to leave out the accents. I know that sometimes it is beneficial to have the most common spelling in the area, but I would prefer to use the less common spelling so there’s an element of standing out!

[name_m]Frederic[/name_m] is charming! I think it fits well with [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] and is has a softer look

I wouldnt know they were missing

Normally I prefer [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] but I agree with others that [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] fits better with Delphine! I do think some people will spell it with a “k” but for the most part it would be pretty easy to correct.

I would choose [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] usually, but [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] is so cute!! And I prefer it with Delphine. Both are so dreamy. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I think it works well enough without the accents, and if that’s the spelling you prefer then by all means go for it!

As someone who left the accent off [name_f]Séraphine[/name_f] and the fada off [name_f]Róisín[/name_f] when it comes to her own kids names, I can definitely say it’s never been a problem. In fact it’s easier for filling in forms and dealing with people whose languages don’t have accents. I prefer [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] as a rule but in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] and with [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] as a sister I think [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] is just fine

I am with you on this one! I much prefer the Frederic. Something about the K on the end doesn’t look right to me. I also have a problem with the E in the middle FredEric/FredErick.
[name_m]Fredric[/name_m] or [name_m]Fredrick[/name_m] without the E also looks cleaner. But either way it is a lovely name.
