Fresh or Bygone?

I have a bunch of names I absolutely loved 5-10 years ago. Names that felt fresh and totally Nameberry then.

I still love these names. I still see them mentioned all the time. But I wonder whether, as a longtime [name_u]Berry[/name_u], they have lost some of their charm through overexposure (either real life use or just lots of [name_u]Berry[/name_u] love).

Many of these have been used by our beloved members and I should disclaim that I’ve never come across an announcement and thought, “Well that’s bygone… the era is over.” If your child’s name is here, I love their name (and you’re probably one of my most respected members because you have great taste)! But now that I consider these names myself I question whether their moment has passed, if that makes sense. They’ve been “done” before, or at least made the shortlist many a time…

I feel the same way about [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] and maybe [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] too. But I still really like both.

The only ones from your list that don’t seem quite as fresh to me are [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] (but I’d still use it), [name_f]Viola[/name_f], [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], and [name_f]Persephone[/name_f].
These names are all great though and if they have special meaning to you I would 100% still use them.

So many of these are personal favourites, so I certainly hope they aren’t bygone, especially by the time I hope to be actually having children of my own. [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] is lovely, but so popular on NB, that it doesn’t feel like an exciting choice anymore. [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] seems entirely mainstream now, too. That isn’t a bad thing, but especially for you, doesn’t feel completely fresh or NB. The ones that I hope don’t end up bygone are [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] (no longer only-NB, but still not bygone), [name_f]Alcyone[/name_f], and [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f].

An interesting exercise. Of course the earlier votes were the more critical ones (perhaps because the very people surfing Nameberry to find the post quickly, depending on time zone of course, are also those to whom the names seem the most bygone via overexposure?).

I’d say 15+ votes for each name gives me pause.

I don’t quite understand how names like [name_f]Vespertine[/name_f] and [name_f]Ernestine[/name_f] could be overexposed…but maybe I’m missing something :woman_shrugging:t2:

@whatchamacallit Part of me feels like [name_f]Vespertine[/name_f] was the [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] of 2010-2015. I feel like every other post back in the day suggested [name_u]Vesper[/name_u] or [name_f]Vespertine[/name_f]. Or, [name_f]Vespera[/name_f]. I also associate it with a longtime trusted member who was outed as a fake way back when.

[name_f]Ernestine[/name_f] I feel like has never been adored the same way the [name_u]Vesper[/name_u] girls have been gushed over. I have never seen a baby [name_f]Ernestine[/name_f] come up in announcements, but I do associate it more with an earlier version of Nameberry than the present… Hmm, I also strongly associate the name with @coffeeorangecats for some reason. Perhaps, [name_f]Alice[/name_f], you could help illuminate why I have this impression of [name_f]Ernestine[/name_f] as potentially belonging to an earlier time in Nameberry history??
