Does anyone have personal experience with the name [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]? I’ve really fallen in love with this name for many reasons. However, I have read some comments that little Gabriels get teased because kids emphasize the [name_u]Gay[/name_u] pronunciation at the beginning of the name. It seems like a popular enough name that I’d hope this would not be the case. But with all of the increase in bullying and other peer issues that kids face now I really don’t want to set my son up for unnecessary struggles. It’s the only name I have really felt was right for our son but I’m very hung up on the potential teasing. Thanks for your help.

I agree. If you were asking about [name_m]Gaylord[/name_m] for example I’d have concerns, but not with [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] (which I love by the way).
I doubt anyone would ever think of that. [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] is a great name, and its pretty popular also. I’m sure he won’t have any issues.
I’ve actually never thought of gay when heading [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]. I don’t think it will be an issue, it’s such a known name
I’ve known a number of Gabriels and I have never heard of anything like this happening. When I first saw your heading I couldn’t imagine what a [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] would get teased about.
The name has been popular for a long time now, so kids will be familiar with it–I doubt it will cause your son problems.
If kids are going to be cruel, they’ll find a way no matter what name a child has (sadly!). It depends where you are, but I’ve also noticed that the kind of homophobic name-calling and bullying that was common when I was a kid is much less common now–kids, even little ones, will call out that behaviour in their peers and stop it (I’ve heard it happen in the library: one of the kids playing at our summer lego table called another kid’s creation “gay”, and a third boy came back with something along the lines of “even if lego could be gay, what is that even supposed to mean? Cause people are born gay. Being mean to other people is way worse”. They were all about 8 years old, and my co-worker and I were SUPER impressed).
