Game of Thrones Character Name... Bad Idea? (I love a name)

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there!
I am here to ask whether or not it would be atrocious to name a real person after a fictional character.
The name I’ve fallen in love with is Visenya, and this is not a character that has ever been in the show or HOTD, it’s a historical figure in the books and I love her name. However, I know the chances of her era getting a show is pretty huge, so it might be awkward one day if we see her and her Targargyen habits lol. Also love the name [name_f]Alicent[/name_f] lol

It sucks because I also love the name [name_f]Circe[/name_f] but [name_f]Cersei[/name_f] from GoT was a big villain and I know most people won’t ever realize I mean [name_f]Circe[/name_f] not [name_f]Cersei[/name_f].

No, not atrocious - some of my fave names come from fiction characters - however, if it is a name very much associated with or invented for that one character, I’d want to like that fictional character, and feel happy to say yes, that character was part of the inspiration.

That’s what really gives me pause here because it doesn’t sound like she is your favourite character or one you’d be comfortable with saying your daughter was named after - right now, it’s not a big deal since she’s less know, but if she does feature in a future show if might make things feel awkward :person_shrugging:

idk - I think the [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] [name_m]Miller[/name_m] book has made more people familiar with [name_f]Circe[/name_f] maybe?

Going back to Visenya, you could consider something similar in sound:

[name_f]Ksenia[/name_f] / [name_f]Xenia[/name_f]
[name_f]Venetia[/name_f]
[name_f]Vesna[/name_f]
[name_f]Vespera[/name_f]
[name_f]Vienna[/name_f]
[name_f]Zenya[/name_f]
[name_f]Vivia[/name_f]
[name_f]Valencia[/name_f]
[name_f]Crescentia[/name_f] / Crescencia

I think they would! I’d argue that Greek myths is more known than GoT (or maybe I’m just a nerd lol). The mythological [name_f]Circe[/name_f] isn’t an amazingly positive association either, but I assume you’re aware of that and it doesn’t bother you or you like the feminism aspect.

I wouldn’t do it. It’s just kinda cheesy imo. [name_f]Enya[/name_f] on its own is really pretty, and it’s more established as a name!

I think it depends! If you’re asking this for some time in the far future, I’d tell you to wait and see if a show is made where this character features prominently. If a show with Visenya as a character is never made, then I don’t think it’s an issue that you found the name in GOT, since very few people will make the connection. But if there is a show about it someday I’d personally advise against using it – for the same reason I don’t like other GOT names, especially female ones, with how much the characters are sexualised it could be a bit uncomfortable as a child’s name.

Some other names with a similar sound: [name_f]Violetta[/name_f], [name_f]Vienna[/name_f], [name_f]Violaine[/name_f], [name_m]Sanya[/name_m], [name_f]Enya[/name_f], [name_f]Brynja[/name_f], [name_f]Fenja[/name_f]

As for [name_f]Circe[/name_f], I think it’s fine. As others have pointed out the mythological connection is fairly well known, especially with the book [name_f]Circe[/name_f] by [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] [name_m]Miller[/name_m] becoming extremely popular in the last few years. And the spelling difference is enough to differentiate it from [name_f]Cersei[/name_f] in my opinion!

Given the recent controversy with that little girl in [name_m]Wales[/name_m] called [name_f]Khaleesi[/name_f] not being able to get a passport because her name is trademarked, I would probably steer clear of GoT character names!
