Garnet?

You guys have been so awesome helping me come up with some name combinations using [name_f]Edith[/name_f]…im so torn because of family history. [name_f]Edith[/name_f] is my grandmother’s name and I feel obligated to use it. But [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] was my great aunt and she was such an important part of my childhood, I would really love to use her name too. Im not feeling the names together though, I just wanted to ask what some other people think. [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f]? What if I did a double middle name to soften [name_f]Edith[/name_f] a little?

I think [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f] is perfectly fine, but I prefer [name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Garnet[/name_f].

If [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] doesn’t feel right to you, I think you could always name her using another semi-precious stone. It can still be an honor name but also give her her own name. I like [name_f]Opal[/name_f] and [name_f]Beryl[/name_f] and [name_f]Lapis[/name_f] and [name_f]Jade[/name_f] with [name_f]Edith[/name_f].

I actually love [name_f]Garnet[/name_f], I just never really considered using it bc my grandmother (edith) will be upset. She would be more upset if I used [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Edith[/name_f] though so I’m hoping if I use both it will be ok.

I was thinking of the nickname [name_f]Nettie[/name_f]/[name_f]Netta[/name_f] for [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] which I also love. I recently came across that as a suggestion and had never really heard that before. My [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] is the only one I’ve ever known and she was called [name_f]Garnet[/name_f].

I really like [name_f]Garnet[/name_f], actually! I think [name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] flows better than [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f], but if you would prefer [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] in the fn spot, you could consider some double mn combos to improve the flow.

[name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f]

Or maybe, to be fair, you could make [name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] the double mn and choose a fn that you just love for whatever reason. _____ [name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Garnet[/name_f]

I do like the idea of a double MN but my other 2 girls only have 1, I haven’t decided yet if that will bother me. I would prefer Garnet as the first name for a few reasons…first, i would like to call her Netta (I think). Second, my oldest is Elizabeth and I didn’t really want another E name. And third, if I use Edith as a fn I think most of our family would call her edie (be it’s adorable) but our elizabeth is almost exclusively called Elli and I think the names are too similar.

To me, [name_u]Garnet[/name_u] seems to fit a boy better. Especially comparing it to your other girls’ names that are such classic feminine names. What about [name_f]Garnetta[/name_f]? Its more feminine and I think it fits with your girls’ names better. But thats just my opinion.

I like the flow of [name_f]Garnetta[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f] better too.

Otherwise, for a second middle name, I like pp suggestion of [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f].
If you are open to a double mn:

[name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Alessia[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f]

I love the idea of you honoring your aunts however I do not like the fact that they are both just straight up honor names. So I found out that [name_f]Edith[/name_f] means prosperous in war. Whilst sadly no names mean that exact meaning a few have war in the meaning.

[name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Alessia[/name_f]
[name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Martina[/name_f]

Forgive me if I’ve misunderstood but it sounds like you actually [name_m]DON[/name_m]'T want to use [name_f]Edith[/name_f] as a first or middle at all?
If you are looking for permission to use [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] without adding [name_f]Edith[/name_f], you have it!
If you WANT to honour an [name_f]Edith[/name_f] w/o copying the name, how about [name_f]Edda[/name_f] or [name_f]Dita[/name_f]? Or [name_m]Edison[/name_m]?
Maybe search for names that contain “edi” or “dit” or “ith”?

I’m not sure what I want lol! I love [name_f]Edith[/name_f] but I definitely don’t want it as a first name since [name_f]Edie[/name_f] is out. I do feel obligated to use it because we’ve used every other grandmother’s name except hers. I am going to look for some other ideas to honor [name_f]Edith[/name_f] without using it, I considered meredith before but I’m not sure I really love it either. I’m not going to use a name i don’t love just to have [name_f]Edith[/name_f] in there but I might have to give up [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] (even though I do love it).

I do really like [name_f]Garnetta[/name_f], and it makes [name_f]Netta[/name_f] a more obvious choice for a nickname. Thanks!

Does anyone have any middle name suggestions for [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] if I just forget about [name_f]Edith[/name_f] for now?

DD1 is [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] (elli) [name_f]Frances[/name_f], named after DH’s grandmother and mine.
DD2 is [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Coraline[/name_f], named mary after DH’s other grandmother and my great grandmother and [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] to honor my husband, [name_u]Cory[/name_u]. So I do feel like both first and middle name should be meaningful in some way to us.

Is the name fitting with your other girls not of importance anymore?
What happened to all the other names you loved, are they also scrapped?

I personally think [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f] sounds awfully stuffy, not very feminine and very different to [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Mary[/name_f].
Maybe you can also find names that will honour these people while still being names you like (apart from [name_f]Nettie[/name_f] as a nickname, you don’t seem very enthusiastic about [name_f]Garnet[/name_f], and fwiw, [name_f]Nettie[/name_f] on her own fits in much better with the girls).

I think [name_f]Garnetta[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f] flows better than [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f]…but I’m not sure either fn matches well with [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Mary[/name_f]. Still, you should use the name you love regardless, I think.

They are definitely not scrapped!
The name fitting with [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Mary[/name_f] isn’t as important as it just being a name i really love and am happy with if it’s an honor name. If I decide to just pick a first name to go with [name_f]Edith[/name_f] or [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] I will most likely choose something classic like [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Mary[/name_f]. I agree that [name_f]Edith[/name_f] and [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] together are too much though.
I prefer the name [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] to [name_f]Edith[/name_f] really, I just haven’t decided if it’s worth it to use that name if it’s going to hurt my grandmother’s feelings.
What are your thoughts on [name_f]Garnetta[/name_f]? Or just [name_f]Netta[/name_f]? Or [name_f]Willa[/name_f]…it isn’t really the same as honoring [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] but her husband was [name_m]William[/name_m] and they both were very important to me and passed away last year.

I think [name_f]Netta[/name_f] is lovely. [name_f]Netta[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f] would also be wonderful.

Some practical ‘softening’ second middle ideas (I love [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] and [name_f]Edith[/name_f] but agree they’re slightly sharp together, styalisticaly at least)

[name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f] (fits in your [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] too!)
[name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f] (some reason the double E appeals to me)
[name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Faye[/name_f]
[name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Adeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Dulcie[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f]

It’s difficult to find a compromise between length and syllables (I’m don’t subscribe to the 3/1/2 nonsense but assuming it’s objectively the most pleasant).

[name_f]Garnet[/name_f] [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] would be pretty. What’s your middle name? What’s [name_f]Edith[/name_f]'s middle name?

Nothing I want to use haha, mine is [name_f]Chantee[/name_f] and [name_f]Edith[/name_f]'s is [name_f]Roberta[/name_f]. My husband has wanted to use [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] but I’m not sure.

You could use something with a similar meaning?

[name_f]Edith[/name_f] (“prosperous in war”):
[name_f]Louise[/name_f] (“renowned warrior”)

[name_f]Roberta[/name_f] (“bright fame”):
[name_f]Claire[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f] (“bright, clear”), [name_f]Helena[/name_f], [name_f]Elena[/name_f], [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] (“bright, shining light”), [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] (“famous friend”)

You could also use a color, word, or place name (or birth/favorite month name) to honor a family member. Hopefully some food for thought!

Personally, I don’t like the sound of [name_f]Garnet[/name_f]. If you can deal with your grandma being upset, then use it since you don’t want another “E” name and you love it.

I don’t think [name_f]Edie[/name_f] and [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] are too similar.
