Gemila or Gamila

Hello! I am looking for arabic or indian baby names. I really love the sound of the arabic name jamila, but I would love the nicknames gigi or gem. Gemila and Gamila are alternative spellings with the same pronunciation. I do not like too many alternative spellings for other names, but I don’t mind these. Which one would you prefer? I also like the names [name_f]Soraya[/name_f] and Inara.

Assuming [name_f]Jamila[/name_f] is pronounced ja-MEE-lah or something similar, I would go with Gemila. From my perspective, I would be more likely to pronounce Gamila with a hard G sound at the beginning. Granted, I don’t know where you’re from, so people might be likely to know the alternative spellings are pronounced the same where you are.

Thank you for your reply. I was thinking the same. It is pronounced ja-mee-la.

Does anyone else have an opinion on gemila? Is it too trendy? I think it is gorgeous. I am trying to find middle eastern, indian/pakistani names that fit our culture. My partner likes the names jade, [name_f]Leila[/name_f], and [name_f]Soraya[/name_f]. [name_f]Leila[/name_f] is too popular for me. Any suggestions? Is Gemila usable? I live in [name_f]Florida[/name_f]. Families are from the middle east, india and Pakistan.

I think [name_f]Soraya[/name_f] and Inara are gorgeous.

I think Gemila is fine, though I do prefer the spellings [name_f]Jamila[/name_f] or [name_f]Jameela[/name_f] (like [name_f]Jameela[/name_f] [name_m]Jamil[/name_m]). I wouldn’t recommend Gamila because people are likely to pronounce it with the hard G sound (as in “garden”).

Suggestions:
[name_f]Nadia[/name_f]
[name_f]Amira[/name_f]
[name_f]Inaya[/name_f]
[name_f]Yara[/name_f]
[name_f]Parisa[/name_f]
Soheila
[name_f]Amina[/name_f]
[name_f]Aya[/name_f]
[name_f]Halima[/name_f]
Malaika
[name_f]Sahar[/name_f]

Thanks for the suggestions. I really like [name_f]Amina[/name_f] too. My dad loves [name_f]Yara[/name_f]. [name_f]Jameela[/name_f] [name_m]Jamil[/name_m] is my favorite actress! That is one reason that I love the name. It is arabic as well. Can you get the nickname gigi from [name_f]Jameela[/name_f] or is that a stretch? I hesitate to pick a j name because all 3 of my siblings have ‘J’ names, an I am the only ‘S’.

I much, much prefer [name_f]Jamila[/name_f], sorry. Gemila and Gamila look harsh and the latter looks as if it’d be pronounced with a hard g. I don’t see why you can’t still use the nicknames [name_f]Gigi[/name_f] and [name_f]Gem[/name_f]? The sounds are there, you’d just have to spell them JeeJee (Jiji?) or [name_u]Jem[/name_u] as nicknames for [name_f]Jamila[/name_f], which is beautiful btw. Inara and [name_f]Soraya[/name_f] are lovely too.

I prefer [name_f]Soraya[/name_f] and Inara to both Gemila and Gamila, but out of the latter two, I prefer Gemila - it sounds softer!

I really like [name_f]Soraya[/name_f] and [name_f]Indra[/name_f] of your options. I have a friend, Suraiya, which is also a lovely spelling.
