[name_m]Hi[/name_m], berries i’d like to get your opinions on the name [name_m]Austin[/name_m] or [name_u]Austen[/name_u] for a daughter. I know many of you dislike gender bending names or boy names “stolen” and given to girls however just like liking classics or unique names liking gender bender names is just another style. That being said what do you think of it?
I prefer [name_u]Austen[/name_u] since it reminds me of [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Austen[/name_u], but I don’t think it sounds pretty or attractive on a girl at all.
It’s alright, I would prefer [name_u]Ashtin[/name_u] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] or [name_u]Arden[/name_u] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_u]LOVE[/name_u] it. I’ve always liked more traditional names (I wouldn’t love [name_m]Austin[/name_m] on a boy) but I quite like boys names for girls. My Mum always secretly has and I think somehow I knew and copied her haha. I think I prefer [name_m]Austin[/name_m] but [name_u]Austen[/name_u] does remind me of [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Austen[/name_u] whom I adore. Though [name_m]Austin[/name_m] looks better for a first name. It reminds me of [name_u]Arden[/name_u], my husband named his daughter [name_u]Arden[/name_u] because [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m]'s mother was [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_u]Arden[/name_u] (he’s an English lit professor). I say go for it!
I like [name_u]Austen[/name_u] on any gender, especially in that spelling it works for girls because it comes off as a literary reference.
I always think of [name_u]Austen[/name_u] as feminine, thanks to [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Austen[/name_u]. I don’t mind it for a girl. [name_m]Austin[/name_m] on the other hand is all boy.
Of the two, I think [name_u]Austen[/name_u] would be the way to go on a girl.
I like [name_u]Austen[/name_u] because of the [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Austen[/name_u] reference. I think it works nicely!
This name has recently been on my mind for a girl. One of my favorite songs is [name_m]Austin[/name_m] by [name_u]Blake[/name_u] [name_m]Shelton[/name_m] and every time I hear it, I think I like it. [name_u]Austen[/name_u] would be a nice literary connection but I feel like it would always be misspelled. In which case, I’d go with [name_m]Austin[/name_m].
In my opinion, [name_u]Austen[/name_u] is for both genders (more so girls) and [name_m]Austin[/name_m] is all boy.
I don’t really like categorizing things into styles and whatnot…it’s so limiting. I prefer to just think about names individually…and people and everything else. Though I guess it’s human nature to label things. That being said…I don’t mind [name_m]Austin[/name_m] or [name_u]Austen[/name_u] on a girl, though it has never been my favorite name either way. But I can see it’s appeal.
Still loathe the style, but then a lot of people hate word names too, so to each their own.
This! I think of the song as well - so love it for a girl. Though it is my #1 choice for a boys name I like the spelling [name_u]Austen[/name_u] for a girl.
DH and I love that sound that’s one reason why we love the name [name_m]Austin[/name_m].
[name_m]Austin[/name_m]/[name_u]Austen[/name_u] are great names for a girl ! I think it has a very windy sound, makes me think of horses too haha. [name_u]Free[/name_u]-spirit vibes maybe ?? But also intelligence. And [name_m]Austin[/name_m] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] is a great combo… they’re both classic names and putting them together in that manner gives it a unique spin while still sounding familiar. Great choice !!
I’m all for gender bending and I’ve actually seen [name_u]Austen[/name_u] used as a girls name. I think it’s a wonderful name.
[name_u]Arden[/name_u] and [name_u]Auden[/name_u] are also alternatives. I think [name_u]Austen[/name_u] works best for a girl. Some other names that fit the style is
[name_u]Ash[/name_u]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f]
[name_u]Aspen[/name_u]
[name_f]Agusta[/name_f]
I really love “[name_u]Austen[/name_u]” for a girl. Like [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Austen[/name_u] so it has that hint of femininity. That version is on my list as well!
From my opinion, I don’t think it’s a question of style. We talk about style for classic, vintage, popular, boho,… names.
I would go with Austine with an -e or Austen. Not Austin.
Thanks everyone for the feedback.
