Gender Neutral Names -- Picking one name to use for a boy or girl

Is it crazy to pick one name to use either way if you aren’t finding out what you are having? I love the name [name_u]Skyler[/name_u]/[name_u]Skylar[/name_u] (using the [name_u]Skyler[/name_u] spelling for a boy, and [name_u]Skylar[/name_u] for a girl), but I am worried that it just seems too crazy to pick out one name to use either way (I personally have not known anyone who did that). I am also more concerned about how the child would feel if it turned out to be a boy, would people tend to think that a “[name_u]Skyler[/name_u]” was a boy or would he frequently be mistaken for a girl? Also, what about sibling names – if he ended up having brothers with clearly male names would it bother him to have a gender neutral name? Thanks for your help and input!

It’s not crazy. My parents did that with my sister. They fell in love with the name [name_m]Brogan[/name_m], but could not agree on a girl’s name. Then my mom saw a female [name_m]Brogan[/name_m] in a magazine and that was the end of that. She was [name_m]Brogan[/name_m], no matter what. Never really had any problems. I think [name_u]Skyler[/name_u]/[name_u]Skylar[/name_u] falls in the same line. I don’t automatically think either gender when I hear the name.

We kinda did that. I knew I was having a girl and naming her [name_u]Avery[/name_u] but towards the end of my pregnancy I kept having dreams she ended up being a boy and I got really stressed out by it. We just decided that if the ultrasound was wrong and she was a boy we’d still name the baby [name_u]Avery[/name_u] and pick a different middle. But happy ending, she was exactly what we were expecting.

I’ve thought about doing this as well with [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]. But I just don’t like it on a girl as much.

If I had been a boy, my parents would have picked the masculine version of my name, so no I don’t think it’s crazy

It’s not crazy. At least you’re doing it with a unisex name and not say “I love [name_m]Fred[/name_m] but if this is a girl, I’m still naming her [name_m]Fred[/name_m].” That would be different. I think people do it all the time but with feminizations like “If this is a boy he’ll be [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] and if it’s a girl she’ll be [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]” and there are plenty of unisex names to do it with so it’s not crazy.

For what it’s worth, I find [name_u]Skyler[/name_u] to be more masculine anyway because I’ve never met a girl [name_u]Skyler[/name_u], just girl [name_u]Skye[/name_u] or [name_f]Skyla[/name_f]. I don’t think anyone will think one way or the other, though, since it’s pretty common on both and isn’t obviously one or the other. Are you planning on using a unisex middle to because I would advise against that.

My top names aren’t really unisex, but I would probably go that way for Makoto, [name_u]Quinn[/name_u], [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], or [name_m]Knox[/name_m], which are unisex names that I like.

Hmm…I’ve always been a fan of [name_u]Riley[/name_u] on a boy, but when my boyfriend suggested [name_u]Rylee[/name_u] for a girl, I shut it down very quickly. I hate boys names on girls, so I don’t think I could ever really do that, even if the name is most commonly unisex. I tend to like names for girls that are more clearly feminine.

If it’s a legitimately unisex name, I don’t see why not.

It’s not crazy if you love a unisex name. On the show Pretty [name_m]Little[/name_m] Liars one of the characters was pregnant and picked the name [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] for her child gender unknown. I think it’s kind of sweet, but doesn’t work for me as I am not a fan of unisex names most of the time.

I think it works fine.
As for if a [name_u]Skyler[/name_u] would care about siblings with masculine names, I’m a [name_u]Kasey[/name_u], which is very unisex, and my siblings are [name_f]Lauren[/name_f], [name_f]Hailey[/name_f], and [name_f]Hope[/name_f], and it never bothered me that my name was less feminine. Truthfully, I hadn’t even thought about it until just now.

where I live is a male name, though it peaked some time back.
