Hello! I’m posting on the behalf of someone else today. A young family member reached out to me about the possibility of finding a less gender binary name in order to match their gender identity better.
We talked about possible names for a while, and they eventually came up with this list from my suggestions:
Do you have any general thoughts or impressions on these names? (I know they’re not all perfectly gender neutral, and that’s okay). Any suggestions for names that may fit the style?
I like these names in general! [name_f]My[/name_f] least favorite is [name_m]Newt[/name_m]- it seems like a fun nickname but I have a hard time seeing it as a given name. Otherwise, I like them all, with my favorites being [name_u]Eden[/name_u], [name_u]Beck[/name_u], [name_m]Elio[/name_m], and [name_u]Noah[/name_u].
In my opinion, the most gender-non conforming names on this list are [name_u]Eden[/name_u], [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], and [name_u]Elliot[/name_u]. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorites are [name_u]Eden[/name_u], [name_u]Elliot[/name_u], [name_u]Noah[/name_u], [name_u]Billie[/name_u], and [name_u]West[/name_u]. Congratulations to your friend and good luck!
Those are all great choices, my first impression is that some of those lean a bit more masculine, but that’s ok! They should choose whatever they decide fits them. Here are some others that feel similar to me:
Word names will less gender association
[name_u]Athens[/name_u]
[name_m]Cosmo[/name_m]
[name_u]Ember[/name_u]
[name_u]Indigo[/name_u]
[name_u]Indiana[/name_u]
[name_m]Spero[/name_m]
[name_u]Quill[/name_u]
I really love [name_u]River[/name_u], [name_u]Beck[/name_u], [name_m]Elio[/name_m] and [name_u]Elm[/name_u]!
The first three read more masculine to me, and [name_u]Elm[/name_u] feels entirely neutral, but all work perfect well for any gender identity, I think.
River and [name_u]Elm[/name_u] are particularly appealing to me — the first for a more familiar name, the second for something surprising.
River, [name_u]West[/name_u], [name_u]Elm[/name_u], [name_u]Elliot[/name_u], and [name_u]Noah[/name_u] all get my vote.
Elliot and [name_u]Noah[/name_u] will probably be assumed to be a male name, so keep that in mind. The others I feel like are more truly gender neutral so might make them feel more comfortable.
Eden, [name_u]River[/name_u], [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_u]Beck[/name_u] and [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] are my favorites! [name_f]My[/name_f] least favorite is [name_m]Newt[/name_m], it sounds more of a nickname than a first name to me. What about…
