Gender Specific Names

I love the name [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f]. When I first heard it, I thought it was a unisex name, but when I looked it up, I saw that it was a girl’s name. Should I go ahead and name my son [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] anyways, or should I give him a boy’s name?

The nameberry database only says [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] is female, but behindthename.com lists it as both male and female.
It’s a word that has’t been used as a name for long, and therefore doesn’t have an established gender the way other wordnames like [name_f]Hope[/name_f] do. So I’d say go for it. [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] isn’t a girls name, it’s a word, and can be given as a name to anyone.

If you’re still worried, you can level it out with a definitely male middle name, like [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] [name_m]George[/name_m].

Really helpful…thanks ”…im going for it 🖒

I prefer it for a girl, but I don’t think anything about it makes it specifically feminine or. masculine (perhaps it’s the whimsical touch that makes people think its girly… shrugs)

I think you could get away with it for either gender

Like a PP said, it’s just a word. I don’t know where you live, but according to this website, it was only used for 12 babies in 2015 in the US. It’s hardly popular enough to make a dent in the ratings for either gender, so it’s not like it’s an overwhelmingly feminine name.

I love [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] for a boy or a girl! I’m happy to hear your going for it :).

[name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] is super cute. [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] [name_u]Jameson[/name_u]?

I love [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f], and to me it doesn’t feel gender specific (as far as any name could be gender specific to begin with).

I love the name, and I’m happy you decided to go for it! I feel like most word names are by default unisex, unless there’s an incredibly strong history of use for a single gender (like [name_f]Rose[/name_f] for girls and [name_m]Clay[/name_m] for boys).

But I’m also not a fan of the gender binary, so take my advice with a grain of salt

[name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] is one of my guilty pleasures for a girl, but I think it can work for any gender. Same with [name_u]Winter[/name_u], which I’d always thought of as feminine because of a book character with the name but when I mentioned it to my S/O he automatically thought it would be for a boy.

[name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] is great! The nn [name_u]Sonny[/name_u] is great and works for any gender!

Thanks…Im going for it 🖒…really helpful…I’m from the US btw…thanks ”

Thanks for your input…appreciate it ”

Thanks…still haven’t decided on a middle name, but definitely going with something more masculine to balance the name out ”

Thanks everyone for your comments…I really appreciated it and took in your advice/suggestions ”

I’m afraid I can’t see this on a boy, It sounds exclusively feminine to me, like Song or [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] or [name_f]Iris[/name_f].

[name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] is not even a name for me but if you love it, you can use it. I don’t see why [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] wouldn’t work in an era when gender seems so “unimportant”
