Thankyou for all your help so far. [name]Just[/name] a little way to go: We’ve decided on [name]Alice[/name] [name]Helena[/name] [name]Rose[/name] for a girl and are now struggling to choose between [name]George[/name] [name]Nicholas[/name] [name]Rose[/name] and [name]Nicholas[/name] [name]David[/name] [name]Rose[/name] for a boy.
So, to help us decide: Who is [name]George[/name]? Who is [name]Nicholas[/name]? What sort of person do you expect named each of the names?
[name]Nicholas[/name], while a very nice classic name, has an 80’s/early 90’s feel to it. [name]George[/name] is more classic, not as popular in the last decades and feels a bit fresher. For what it’s worth, I teach college, and I have about several Nicks as students in my very small liberal arts department. I always have at least 2 Nicks in my 20-person classes every semester. I’ve yet to meet a [name]George[/name], but would be thrilled if I did.
I would expect that [name]George[/name] is well rounded, but average, he doesn’t particularly excel at anything, but he’s not really bad at anything either. He’s amicable, and easy to get along with, although not the most memorable person. He’d probably play a sport like baseball in high school, he’d be a pitcher or second baseman. I’d picture him being a redhead.
[name]Nicholas[/name] would be less academically concerned and so wouldn’t really bother with subjects he wasn’t really good at. When he is good at something though, he’s really good at it. He might have a little bit of an interest in extreme sports like snowboarding and skateboarding. He’d be a little harder to get along with, I would expect him to have a temper and get annoyed easily, but he’d be very loyal to people he considered his friends. Others would consider him an interesting person.
Haha, wow that was really fun! I never realized what image I had of those names until now. And by the way, [name]Alice[/name] is a very pretty name
My mom was a teacher and always told me to never name my kid [name]Nicholas[/name]. She is not the only teacher that has told me that either. I’ve asked a lot of teachers what names have a bad connection and that one is pretty consistent. They say that [name]Nicholas[/name]’ tend to be very much like rachileigh described. Only the thing they’re good at is distracting other kids with their poor behavior in school. Crazy that there are stereotypes for particular names.
For [name]George[/name], I don’t think of a stereotype, I think of famous [name]Georges[/name]: [name]George[/name] [name]Washington[/name], the 2 [name]George[/name] Bushes, and Curious [name]George[/name]. Whether or not that’s good is up to you, but the associations will definitely be there as your child grows up.
I love [name]Nicholas[/name]. I think of a attractive dude (though kind of a jock) who is easy going and laid back. Maybe not academic but smart when he applies. Tempermental but loyal and protective.
[name]George[/name] I’m not so fond of. I kind of imagine a sniveling nerd with huge glass and a snotty nose. Sorry. Please do [name]Nicholas[/name] for your childs sake
[name]Nicholas[/name] is a troublemaker through and through. [name]George[/name] hasn’t been used for so long that I think a boy could really make it his own. Go for [name]George[/name].
[name]Don[/name]'t forget that [name]George[/name] is a hero from the [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] stories. I prefer [name]Nicol[/name] to [name]Nicholas[/name] and as a teacher, I meet all kinds of Nicks/[name]Nicos[/name]. They run the gamut from skater boys to engineers. Other than in my own family, I’ve yet to meet a [name]George[/name]. [name]Don[/name]'t forget, there’s always the Scottish nn [name]Geordie[/name], which is adorable.
[name]George[/name] gets my vote, it’s lovely, strong, and underused, plus, it reminds me of [name]George[/name] Weasley, who is a total hero
I don’t agree though that [name]Nicholas[/name] is a troublemaker, in the sense that, I’ve met a [name]Nicholas[/name], and he was a total nerd who got A’s on every subject.
I do think there are so many [name]Nicholas[/name]’ that there isn’t really a stereotype for me. I’ve met all kinds of [name]Nicholas[/name]’ And there aren’t enough [name]George[/name]'s below a certain age to have a stereotype either.
Although I haven’t taught any [name]Georges[/name], the one young adult I have met in my life was actually quite a jock, and heartthrob. All the girls loved him - he was a highschool teacher and kind of preppy / golfer type. Very nice and funny. He’s probably in his mid-late 30’s now.
Interestingly, I have a brother named [name]Nicholas[/name] [name]George[/name]. I have always loved his name. He is definitely not a troublemaker or lazy student, so I have never made that connection with his name. I think of a [name]Nicholas[/name] as being laid back, but studious and responsible, which is just how my brother is. [name]George[/name] is my grandfather’s name. I think it is a great classic name that is ready for a comeback.
Elinor I just posted on the other thread and voted for Alice and Nicholas. You can’t go wrong with Nicholas it one of the handsomest of names, a true classic.
I always think of Nicholas as being a very handsome, charismatic person, classy, gregarious - almost perfect.
I think of George in a totally different way. I think George is a better middle name unless you like strong, plain names. I see George as being a solid fellow but not one to stand out from the crowd like Nicholas.
I married a [name]Nicholas[/name] ([name]Nick[/name].) He’s a musician, very technically minded, and the hardest working person I know. He’s very caring, loyal, funny, and a very hands-on dad.
I’ve never personally known a [name]George[/name] under 60, so hard to get an impression of it for a young person. I do think of both President Bushes and Curious [name]George[/name] (my son is a huge fan, lol.)
I know a young [name]Nicolas[/name] and he is absolutely amazing! Handsome as can be, smart, kind, giving, outgoing and friends are drawn to him, he is one of the most polite children I know! Also, he is naturally athletic, and has a love for learning, his teachers have NEVER had a problem with him. As far as a poster saying its dated 80’s/90’s…I disagree with that, if you look at the charts, its still in steady use, its a handsome classic with great nn options, [name]Cole[/name], [name]Nick[/name], [name]Nicky[/name], [name]Nico[/name]…
As far as [name]George[/name], it feels more unique since its a lot less used, and I imagine a nice guy, someone who is good in school and friendly.
Neither name really has a sterotype really so I guess you should just go with what you love. My favorite would be [name]Nicolas[/name] (this spelling). Good [name]Luck[/name]!
I know a lot of boys named [name]Nicholas[/name], from age 5 to 25! I agree that [name]Nicholas[/name] is a handsome, classic name - one that has been around a long time and will continue to be around, without being TOO popular.
I also know 2 boys named [name]George[/name] - ages 8 and 9. They are both blond and very outgoing and laid-back personalities. I think of [name]George[/name] [name]Clooney[/name] when I hear the name [name]George[/name] - you can’t go wrong with that association!
I would definitely go for [name]George[/name]! [name]George[/name] is such a wonderful, classic name. Like another poster mentioned there really aren’t a whole lot of preconceived notions about what a [name]George[/name] is like. The youngest [name]George[/name] I’ve met is in his early 20’s, I’d [name]LOVE[/name] to meet a baby
[name]George[/name]. Now [name]Nicholas[/name], I’m not a huge fan of. I have known far more [name]Nicholas[/name]’ than [name]George[/name]'s but, the last child I met named [name]Nicholas[/name]
was not well behaved, to say the least. So unfortunately I think of him when I think of the name! If you were to go for [name]Nicholas[/name] I would go for [name]Nico[/name] as a nickname. [name]Nico[/name] is the only thing I really like about [name]Nicholas[/name]!
That was very interesting! We’re going for [name]George[/name]. So, we will be: [name]Lucy[/name] [name]Matilda[/name], [name]Peter[/name] [name]Elliot[/name], [name]Joseph[/name] [name]Andrew[/name], [name]Sophie[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Mary[/name] [name]Elinor[/name], [name]William[/name] [name]Thomas[/name], [name]Edward[/name] [name]Matthew[/name] and [name]Alice[/name] [name]Helena[/name] or [name]George[/name] [name]Nicholas[/name]! Thanks for all your help. [name]Will[/name] let you know when he/she arrives!! [name]Elinor[/name] x
I love the name [name]Nicholas[/name], but I put pick [name]George[/name] over [name]Nicholas[/name]… it’s less common, still classic, and has a good meaning. The only thing that would hold me back from [name]George[/name] is the 2 previous [name]George[/name] [name]Bush[/name] presidents. But otherwise, [name]George[/name] is a wonderful underused classic name.
ETA: I just saw you picked George Nicholas… I LOVE it! Congrats!
I have to chuckle at these stereotypes of [name]Nicholas[/name]. I’ve never met a guy who fit that! Most [name]Nicholas[/name]’ I’ve met have been very kind, easy-going, and very responsible. Of course, St. [name]Nicholas[/name] is the epitome of kindness, creativity, and joy and is known as a protector of women and children. What a great historical connection! I’d vote [name]Nicholas[/name]; I even think it sounds better with your one-syllable last name.
[name]George[/name] is a fine name, but kind of stuffy and outdated sounding to me. Yes, I know old-sounding names are back “in” right now, but this one doesn’t do much for me. Then again, going back to historical references, there are some great [name]George[/name]'s including another [name]Saint[/name], St. [name]George[/name]. So I don’t think you can go wrong, but I greatly prefer [name]Nicholas[/name].
Eta: Ah, I see you picked George Nicholas! A nice strong, male name! Congrats!
