[name]Hi[/name] all. My name is actually [name]Julia[/name], and I dislike it - it’s boring and stern, to my ears at least. My middle name is [name]Rose[/name] (hence my user name) and I much prefer it. My question is, how do I get people who have known me as [name]Julia[/name] to start calling me [name]Rose[/name]? I’m moving cities soon so now seems like a perfect time to start introducing myself as [name]Rose[/name], but how do I persuade my family and my friends? Or should I just be [name]Rose[/name] to some, [name]Julia[/name] to others?

Well, like you said, I’d just introduce myself as “[name]Rose[/name]” to the new people in your life, nuy short of repeatedly asking the people who’ve known you as [name]Julia[/name] to call you [name]Rose[/name], I don’t know what else you can do.
I do know someone who changed her name, and when people accidentally called her by the old name, she simply corrected them (gently) until the new name (her middle name) stuck! In the end, it all worked out, though I still think of her as the old name.

What you’re going to need is another [name]Julia[/name]. I never get a good, solid ‘[name]Jenny[/name]’ out of people until there’s a [name]Jenn[/name] or [name]Jennifer[/name] around from whom I need to be distinguished.
