My husband and I both like the nickname [name]Cal[/name] but we need some help on ways to get there. I really don’t like anything about [name]Calvin[/name] so we are looking for other alternatives. (I have this same issue with loving [name]Dex[/name] and hating [name]Dexter[/name]). Any ideas are appreciated. My favorite is [name]Callahan[/name] but I think [name]Callahan[/name] might be too much name for a little boy. We are toying with [name]Michael[/name] [name]Callahan[/name] Crummings and calling him [name]Cal[/name]. [name]Michael[/name] for my husband’s late father and our last name is spelled without the R. So I guess my questions are
What is your favorite name for the nickname [name]Cal[/name]?
[name]Do[/name] you like [name]Callahan[/name]? Is it too much name for a little boy?
I like [name]Callahan[/name]! I’ve never heard it before but I think it’d work.
What about:
[name]Caleb[/name]
[name]Callum[/name]
[name]Calhoun[/name]
[name]Calloway[/name]
[name]Calen[/name]
I love the name [name]Callum[/name] with the nickname [name]Cal[/name].
I don’t like [name]Callahan[/name]. It is too much of a name for a little boy. It is a last name. I think of [name]Noah[/name] [name]Callahan[/name] from The Notebook… which isn’t a bad association at all…
I love [name]Callahan[/name], but I myself may use [name]Halloran[/name], which rules [name]Callahan[/name] out. I don’t think it’s too much for a little boy.
I think [name]Callahan[/name] is nice if a little heavy / surnamey. If I met a [name]Callahan[/name] I would assume he came from a welthy Irish American family and it was his great-grandmothers maiden name or something
I too [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Cal[/name] but hate [name]Calvin[/name]. I think [name]Callahan[/name] is super cute though! [name]Callum[/name] is cute and so is [name]Calloway[/name]. I think just calling him [name]Cal[/name] would be perfectly fine as well.
I like [name]Callahan[/name], and I’m not usually big on surnames. I think [name]Michael[/name] [name]Callahan[/name] ‘Crummings’ nn [name]Cal[/name] is a great name.
I also like [name]Callum[/name] and [name]Callen[/name]/[name]Callan[/name].
P.S. [name]Dex[/name] can be a nn for [name]Declan[/name], as in Decs… there’s also [name]Dez[/name] for [name]Desmond[/name], if you like?
I love [name]Cal[/name]! My favorite way to get to it, ironically, is [name]Calvin[/name]. But I also like [name]Callum[/name], [name]Callan[/name], [name]Pascal[/name], [name]Calder[/name], and [name]Calloway[/name]. I think [name]Callahan[/name] is fine–it’s not that it’s too much name for a little boy–it’s that it’s too surnamey for an actual person, imo. Which is ironic, seeing that I love surnames so much. [name]Do[/name] you have any Callahans in your family tree? Does the meaning of [name]Callahan[/name] have any meaning to you personally? Without any connection to the name other than “we liked it”, I don’t think most people will really “get” [name]Callahan[/name]. I like surnames, and I have to admit, I don’t really get it. It just sort of comes off as looking for a less-common, more-out-there hipster sort of version of [name]Calvin[/name] (and subsequently, [name]Callum[/name] and [name]Callan[/name], because they seemed too common for you, too…). I’m assuming that really wasn’t your thought process, but I think that’s how it’ll come across to some people.
Good luck!
ETA: I feel like a dufus for not suggesting Caleb! I love the idea of Caleb nn Cal, and if I ever use a nn for Caleb (if I’m lucky enough to have a Caleb!) Cal will likely be his nn. I don’t like Cale.
I like [name]Callahan[/name] to get to [name]Cal[/name], I don’t think it’s too much for a little boy to handle. The other name that I really like the nn [name]Cal[/name] with is [name]Callum[/name].
Our son is named [name]Caleb[/name] and [name]Cal[/name] is one of our nn for him. (The non embarrassing one that will carry through hopefully.) I love it! His big sister couldn’t pronounce his name at first so called him Calbie, which couldn’t have been cuter. He’s 17 mo and we have never regretted our choice, if anything we’re happier with it as time goes by.
So I highly recommend [name]Caleb[/name] but also really like [name]Callum[/name] & [name]Callen[/name], although sometimes people seem to get a bit mixed up between the two.
My husband’s name is [name]Caleb[/name] and he goes by [name]Cal[/name]. But my favorite “[name]Cal[/name]” name is definitely [name]Callum[/name]–so cute! I do like [name]Callahan[/name] as well, though. I think it is a bit “heavy” as some other posters were saying, but not impossible to pull off.
I’ve wondered if [name]Cal[/name] could work as a nickname for [name]Charles[/name]. [name]Callie[/name] and [name]Cal[/name] can be used for [name]Caroline[/name] which is a feminine form of [name]Charles[/name] so maybe it could work.
If you have Irish roots to honour (or if you just like Irish names!) what about [name]Cathal[/name] ([name]CA[/name]-hal), with [name]Cal[/name] as a kind of “contracted” nickname? Conceivably you could also use Cahill (usually pr. [name]CAY[/name]-hill), but it might have the same problems as [name]Callahan[/name]. We’ve been toying with all of these suggestions as well, partly in homage to Dh’s father, [name]Calvin[/name], and partly to honour a valued mentor with the last name [name]Callaghan[/name]. So far [name]Callum[/name] is our top pick for “[name]Cal[/name]” names, but all the suggestions above have been on our list at one point! Good luck with the search
