We had all but decided to name our baby [name_m]Gideon[/name_m], have been calling him that for weeks. Lately, I have been having cold feet. [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] is a grandfather’s name and I have always loved it, but DH always vetoed it. I brought it up again and he admitted it had grown on him. We still do like [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] though. We have a common, one syllable last name.
Which first name do you like better?
I love both names, with a slight preference for [name_m]Gideon[/name_m]. I don’t think you can go wrong either way.

Wow, I love both of those names. I think I have a slight preference for [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] because I love [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] and [name_m]Hobbes[/name_m], but really, I don’t think you could go wrong with either.
I prefer [name_m]Gideon[/name_m]. It feels rugged and energetic to me, whereas [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] is more preppy and brainy. If you like your names to feel outdoorsy (as I do), then [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] is the way to go. Have you decided on a middle name? [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] sounds nice to me.
I prefer [name_m]Calvin[/name_m], but I imagine [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] would flow nicely with a common, one-syllable last name.
[name_m]Gideon[/name_m] is also a favorite of mine - I love it! Not super keen on [name_m]Calvin[/name_m], although it’s also a nice choice! Perhaps wait until you meet him…he’ll most likely help you to decide!
I prefer [name_m]Calvin[/name_m]. I don’t know what it is about [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] that I don’t like, but I just can’t see actually using it on a child myself although it’s nice in theory.
[name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] and the nickname [name_u]Cal[/name_u]. [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] has a very evangelical religious feel to me.

I say stick with [name_m]Gideon[/name_m]. It’s a strong name, and since he’s only had it for a few weeks, you have to give him time to grow into it. I’m sure he will! [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] is gorgeous, I think you should stay with your gut instinct.

I think [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] is a really lovely name, although [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] is a more unique.
Thank You for your help! I am having the hardest time deciding still. I think it is easier for me to picture a little boy named [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] than [name_m]Gideon[/name_m]. I would have a hard time giving [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] up though. I wish there weren’t so many great names in the world!

I am a huge fan of [name_m]Calvin[/name_m]! I want to pick [name_m]Gideon[/name_m], because it honestly seems like you favor it–you’re just having a bit of last-minute jitters. I love the classic, laid-back, down-to-earth, kind, strong image of [name_m]Calvin[/name_m], though. Any [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] I know (or know of) has been pretty great, and I can’t imagine a [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] not being awesome! I’m sure he’d be on my own list if [name_m]Caleb[/name_m] wasn’t already. [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] has grown on me, though, and it is a really cool name, and I do know an adorable little toddler named [name_m]Gideon[/name_m]. I personally like [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] best, but either would be great. If it was for me, though, I’d easily vote [name_m]Calvin[/name_m]. Good luck!
[name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_m]Gideon[/name_m]! [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] reminds me of the mischievous [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] & [name_m]Hobbes[/name_m], and the meaning isn’t all it could be. NN’s [name_u]Cal[/name_u] and [name_m]Vin[/name_m]/[name_u]Vinny[/name_u] aren’t that appealing to me either. But somehow they almost tie : )
