[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] has been a personal favorite for years, but I would be more likely to use [name_m]Gideon[/name_m]. It has a strong, rolling, amiable sound, and [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] is much less common.

I voted [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]. I like the sound better. Plus, you can shorten it to [name_m]Gabe[/name_m],and I’m big on nicknames.

I picked [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]… [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] has a icky sound… I hate it

I much prefer [name_m]Gideon[/name_m].

[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] is fine but I dislike the nn [name_m]Gabe[/name_m] and with the popularity of girls names like [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f] and [name_f]Brielle[/name_f] and [name_f]Avril[/name_f] and the like, the sound combination is sounding more feminine. I do think a more modern nn might be [name_m]Abe[/name_m].

I voted [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] - [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] just has such an unattractive sound to me.

[name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] (there may be an actor…etc), [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] less so, mostly because of a girl I know with that name, nn. ‘Gids’ >.>.

[name_m]Gideon[/name_m] has a cool factor in its uncommonness, but I’d have to go with [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]. It has a more positive meaning and [name_m]Gabe[/name_m] is such a cute nickname.

I agree that [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] wins in the coolness category, but it has an odd meaning. [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] is handsome-r, I think.

I really like both of them, so to me it depends on what type of vibe you’re going for. [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] to me is straight biblical, while [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] also has kind of a western, cowboy-ish feel to it. [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] is more popular, while [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] is less so. I voted for [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m], because I like having nickname options, but in my opinion you can’t go wrong with either!

I like both names but my preference is [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]. It’s one of those “softer” boys names that appeal to me and I love the archangel connection with the name. I also like the fact that its versatility allows it to crossover cultures and races. [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] is certainly less popular but it has a different vibe. It has more of a country and western twang to it (giddy-up!) and would probably blend into all of the other names that end in “n”.

I strongly prefer [name_m]Gideon[/name_m]. It has a much stronger, masculine feel to me than [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m].
I find it’s slightly awkward sound very appealing in comparison to the more sing-songy [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m].
I also really like nn’s Gid or [name_m]Eon[/name_m] over [name_m]Gabe[/name_m].

I voted for [name_m]Gideon[/name_m]. [name_m]Both[/name_m] are fine names, I just have a strong dislike for the name [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]/[name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f]/[name_f]Gabriella[/name_f]. I don’t know what it is, I just don’t like the sound of it.

I’ve had this conversation with my husband… we both love the story of the Biblical Gideon, and when I hear it, I LOVE it-- but as a name, I definitely prefer Gabriel over Gideon. It seems more approachable somehow. I think we’ll end up using Gabriel as a first name, and perhaps Gideon as a middle.

I think I’ve only met/know of one Gideon in my entire lifetime (other than Biblical). It created a great conversation of Christian witness between his mom and I that we certainly would not have had otherwise. So in that way I can clearly see it’s value. I can honestly say that if a person uses Gideon, there are so few in the world that you’d pretty much know his namesake was Biblical. I find it awkward that taiki_bansei knows a girl named Gideon… probably the same people who’d name their daughter Genesis.

I love the name [name_m]Gabe[/name_m]. I’ve only known a few, but they were always awesome people. [name_f]One[/name_f] is a dear friend of mine & in my age group it was such a unique name. I prefer the name [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] over [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] though as it feels stronger. I dislike the lack of nickname, but if it’s [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] vs [name_m]Gideon[/name_m], [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] gets my vote!

I know a man in his 50’s who’s name is [name_m]Gideon[/name_m]. He’s a college professor and very polite and professional. So I think of him first when I hear the name, rather than the Biblical character. But that’s definitely a strong association, though these days fewer and fewer younger people know those stories.

That is the question isn’t it! Gabriel forever has my heart (and my vote) but over the past few months I have been massively crushing on Gideon as well and trying to find hypothetical ways to use it as a middle name somewhere. Gabriel is much softer and more lyrical, which is something I’m often drawn to in boys names. Gideon does feel stronger, but also more biblical to me (simply because it is less common and I think it has fewer references) and as I’m not religious I think I would feel a bit more uncomfortable using this choice. Here’s to boy-boy twins and throwing out all the rules to prevent matchiness! Haha. I’m so glad you made this poll, it will be interesting to see everyone’s preferences. =]

[name_m]Gideon[/name_m]! I love the Biblical namesake (not that I don’t like the angel namesake but the human one is one to strive to live up to that could be reached if you know what I mean) [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] is also much less common.

I’m torn here. Because while I never really loved [name_m]Gideon[/name_m], right now I’m going through a stage of really not liking [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] at all. So with them paired next to each other, I prefer [name_m]Gideon[/name_m]. But the personality and feel of each name taken into consideration, I like [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] better (plus, I love the Biblical significance of [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]). I think it would depend on the combo it’s in, too, for my final say. But here I’ve voted for [name_m]Gideon[/name_m].

I chose [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] because it seems “fresher” to me. IDK. I have always liked [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m], but I think it was a better name maybe a decade ago.
