Giles?! Or am I totally out of my mind?

I have fully talked myself into this name as of last night and judging by some the reactions I’ve gotten by the few people I’ve told, I’ve apparently lost my mind. I already have a son named [name]Simon[/name] [name]Nathanael[/name] and [name]Simon[/name] was the only boys name I really loved so when I found out I’m having another boy I became a little stressed. I kind of paused on [name]Tobias[/name] and [name]Grady[/name] but I’m not in love with either. [name]Giles[/name] (pronounced [name]Jiles[/name]) has all of a sudden became the first name I’ve actually been excited about. I keep trying to convince people that it’s the next [name]Miles[/name]! Haha! I need some other opinions on this. It’s ok if you think it’s absurd, I’ve been charmed by absurd things my entire life!

[name]Giles[/name] is a saint name so it’s right up my alley! The image I have of [name]Giles[/name] is that of a refined, upper class, British gentleman sitting in front of the fire with his two faithful dogs at his feet. It may be too sleek and suave for some people’s taste and that’s fine. I quite like its gentility and classic simplicity. I’m glad to hear that another boys name is floating your boat at last!

[name]One[/name] of my friends commented on how British it sounds. She says she expects him to wear lots of driving caps and maybe carry a pocket watch!

There’s nothing crazy about [name]Giles[/name] at all! It’s not a favourite, but that’s mostly because I don’t like any ‘G’ names. It’s quite dignified, actually.

I have known 2 [name]Giles[/name] in my life and both were great! [name]One[/name] was an older gentleman…the super of my exes building an san fran & the other was young & a vry sexy musician & welder who met a tragic end. I have really positive associations with the name but I can tell you it really ages well & suits such differrnt types.

I think it’s a really great name!

Thank you so much! I came to know the name from playing in The Crucible where there is an older character named [name]Giles[/name] [name]Corey[/name]. I’m not sure I would have been associated with it otherwise but the more I say it the more I like it. Then I realized that [name]November[/name] marks 10 years since I did that production and my due date is also in [name]November[/name] so I thought that was kind of exciting. I don’t think I have a single person on board yet but they’ll come around! I’m just afraid my pregnancy brain might be getting the best of me or something and it might actually be a terrible choice for me to be entertaining!

I actually think [name]Giles[/name] fits right in with the recent up-rise of “old man” names for kiddos. I hate to use the term hipster, but I think a lot of “hipster” people would adore the name. It’s also just one letter off from the very popular and attractive [name]Miles[/name]. I think it’s a new up-and-comer, honestly. I can see if becoming quite popular in the near future. It’s not a bad name at all. It’s growing on me too!

Pregnancy brain made me consider some strange names but I think [name]Giles[/name] is great! The fact that it has special meaning gives it extra points imo!

I do think it’s a sophisticated sounding name for an infant & maybe that’s why people aren’t responding to it…names like [name]Milo[/name] are easy to say in baby-voice but [name]Giles[/name] does sound more adult.

You are not out of your mind at all! [name]Giles[/name] is a really lovely name!

I love the name [name]Giles[/name]! We considered it for this LO, but ultimately decided on [name]Simon[/name] instead.

I disagree with all of you…there is a quality to this name that really turns my stomach…it is most definitly NOT the next [name]Miles[/name]…I’m sorry but this name creeps me out and I really really hate it

That’s fantastic! [name]Simon[/name] is my 19 mo old and I love his name so much! Not too many people were sold on his name either but I’ve never been good at giving a hoot what people think!

My grandfather’s middle name was [name]Jiles[/name].
I am seriously considering it as a middle name for a son someday.

I am British, living in Australia and it is a great name to my ear, short, strong, masculine, familiar and historic but not overused. To English ears it is upper class but not ridiculously so, I’d put it in the same category as [name]Piers[/name], [name]Henry[/name], [name]Hugh[/name] and [name]Guy[/name].

I think [name]Giles[/name] is fantastic! For the non-Brits, there is also the “[name]Buffy[/name]” association, which for me, is a huge plus. [name]Giles[/name] is a brilliant name (could it be the new hipster [name]Miles[/name]?).

I love [name]Miles[/name] but not [name]Giles[/name]… It has slimy sound

I agree with a pp, I think of [name]Buffy[/name]. But the character was lovable, and I think [name]Giles[/name] is adorable. It is definitely a name that will stand out, but in a good way. Plus, it has plenty of growing room. It doesn’t sound childish or old man ish, imo.

[name]Giles[/name] [name]Corey[/name] is my hero. Instead of entering a plea he chose to be crushed to death. Because he was never found guilty of witchcraft the court couldn’t take his land. He was the only one whose farm was passed on to his sons according to his will. His last words were “more weight”.
[name]Simon[/name] and [name]Giles[/name] are perfect together.

I love [name]Giles[/name], but as a [name]Buffy[/name] fan, that’s easy to do. It does strike me as British, but your other son’s name, [name]Simon[/name], is on my [name]Brit[/name] list too, so I like the sound of them as a sibset.

I much prefer [name]Giles[/name] to [name]Miles[/name] and [name]Giles[/name] and [name]Simon[/name] make a great sibset, I say go for it.
