What do you think of Giles?
It isn’t like I hadn’t heard the name before, but the last time I heard it, it really hit me how awesome it is.

[name_m]Giles[/name_m] is wonderful. Short, strong, simple, intelligent, sexy.
Unfortunately, it will always sound like a surname to me personally (because of [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Giles[/name_m] from Buffy). With that said, [name_m]Giles[/name_m] could still work! There are lots of surname-y first names that work wonderfully. [name_m]Giles[/name_m] sounds sophisticated and intelligent to me.
I think it’s nice! I always want to go “yeah it’s great” but there’s something about it I don’t like & I’m not quite sure what it is.
As a [name_u]Brit[/name_u], I’m not quite ready for a [name_m]Giles[/name_m] revival yet, but I can see the appeal. It’s got a kind of suave old school feel, like [name_m]Roger[/name_m].
[name_f]My[/name_f] primary association is [name_m]Farmer[/name_m] [name_m]Giles[/name_m], which is a character from a Tolkien fable (apparently) but is familiar to me as a silly character my dad used to do when we were little! To this day, he still calls his oldest, grottiest, holey-est jumper his “Farmer [name_m]Giles[/name_m] jumper”
I agree with @katinka. [name_m]Giles[/name_m] is very dated here, it’s a grandad name. I don’t think it’s ready for revival yet.
Oddly enough, because he’s so often referred to as just [name_m]Giles[/name_m], I feel much more endeared to it as a first (or middle). I can’t quite imagine using it upfront myself, but I’d love to meet a little [name_m]Giles[/name_m]. [name_m]Giles[/name_m] comes across as intelligent, bookish, kind, gentle, and caring, which I really like in a name.
I find [name_m]Giles[/name_m] a bit clunky and heavy but i can also see thr vintage appeal
Interesting that you call it clunky! [name_m]Just[/name_m] curious, is that more of an image of the name to you? I always think of clunky as more of a sound thing, and [name_m]Giles[/name_m] is so smooth sounding to me likes [name_u]James[/name_u] or [name_u]Miles[/name_u].
I think it must be an image thing, as you’re right the sounds are smooth
[name_m]Giles[/name_m] does feel kind of stuffy and distinctly British to me, but there are appealing qualities to it!
I really like [name_m]Giles[/name_m]. For me it’s stuffy and clunky in a good way, although I was a massive buffy fan so that’s probably why.
It’s not a name I’d pick as I love a long name but I’d be delighted to me a little [name_m]Giles[/name_m] on the playground.
[name_m]Giles[/name_m] sounded like a surname not a first name.
