My husband and I fell in love with the name [name]Lydia[/name]. We have been calling our baby (due in [name]August[/name]) by the name for 2 months but then we found out that my brother and his wife are calling their daughter (also due in [name]August[/name]) [name]Lydia[/name] as well. We want to change the name but stick with a Bible name. Any suggestions?
Ohh, [name]Lydia[/name] would have been lovely! That’s too bad. I love that she was the first European [name]Christian[/name].
Erm, what about:
[name]Rachel[/name]
[name]Eve[/name]
[name]Susanna[/name]
[name]Tabitha[/name]
[name]Hannah[/name]
[name]Miriam[/name] (not my thing, really, but [name]Miri[/name] is adorable!)
[name]Mary[/name]
[name]Elizabeth[/name]
[name]Ruth[/name]
[name]Naomi[/name]
[name]Dorcas[/name]
[name]Anna[/name]
Would you consider variants, like [name]Lillian[/name] and [name]Isabelle[/name] for [name]Elizabeth[/name], or [name]Annabel[/name] for [name]Anna[/name], etc.?
Good luck!
Thanks [name]How[/name] would you pronounce [name]Miri[/name]? I think [name]Miriam[/name] sounds like an older name but maybe if the nickname is cute. We are considering variants. [name]One[/name] possible choice we are thinking of us [name]Elisa[/name] (short for [name]Elizabeth[/name]). I love [name]Ruth[/name] but I also have a niece with that name.
[name]Leah[/name] could be a similar alternative. [name]Leah[/name] is a beautiful name! My personal favorite Biblical names for girls are: [name]Miriam[/name], [name]Eve[/name], [name]Susannah[/name], [name]Martha[/name], [name]Ruth[/name], [name]Magdalene[/name], and any form of [name]Mary[/name].
My favorite Biblical names
[name]Naomi[/name]/[name]Noemi[/name]
[name]Esther[/name]- love her story
[name]Vashti[/name]- love her story too
[name]Eve[/name]
[name]Rebecca[/name]
[name]Sarah[/name]
[name]Dinah[/name]/[name]Dina[/name] -it’s my own name, so I might be a little biased.
[name]Miriam[/name]
[name]Elizabeth[/name]
[name]Mary[/name]
[name]Miri[/name] would be pronounced like “mee-ree”. I think it’s very cute!
Other suggestions
[name]Abigail[/name]
[name]Bethany[/name]
[name]Claudia[/name]
[name]Delilah[/name]
[name]Joanna[/name]
[name]Joy[/name]
[name]Rebecca[/name]/[name]Rebekah[/name]
[name]Sarah[/name]/[name]Sarai[/name]
Get out your Bible Maps! I think Biblical place names, such as [name]Lydia[/name], have potential… even though my hubby nay-say’d all of them
Some stand-out place names are [name]Eden[/name], [name]Joppa[/name], [name]Bethany[/name], {Mt of}[name]Olive[/name]{s}, and [name]Lydda[/name]
I say MEER-ee. Since [name]Miriam[/name] is MEER-ee-um. I love [name]Elisa[/name]! I read this series about this amazing [name]Elisa[/name] in high school–it’s a great [name]Christian[/name] fiction series, if you’re interested (The [name]Zion[/name] Covenant, by [name]Brock[/name] and Bodie Thoene). I think it’s a pretty cool connection to the name. My only hang up is that it sounds so much like [name]Lisa[/name]. For years I thought it was pronounced like [name]Eliza[/name], and to be honest, I still love the idea of [name]Elisa[/name] pronounced like [name]Eliza[/name]. Probably not very realistic, though.
[name]Do[/name] you have a favorite Bible character? Some of my favorite names hold ties to my favorite Bible characters/stories, etc. [name]Caleb[/name] is so much more meaningful to me because I love the character–a spy, a warrior for God (deep into his 80s!), a loving father… he was pretty much a rockstar. And his relationship with God was amazing. I would love for a future son to love the tie to the Biblical [name]Caleb[/name], to aspire to be as much of a Godly man as [name]Caleb[/name] was. Maybe you could get some inspiration for your own daughter?
ETA: Also, have you thought of names that don’t exactly show up in the Bible, but they have very obviously religious/[name]Christian[/name] meanings? Like [name]Eliora[/name], which means “The [name]Lord[/name] is my light”, or [name]Arianne[/name]/[name]Ariana[/name]/etc. meaning “very holy one”, or [name]Arabella[/name], meaning “prayerful”? I think that could be another source of inspiration. I think [name]Lily[/name] names are great to honor the [name]Christian[/name] faith as well–one of [name]Jesus[/name]’ names is “[name]Lily[/name] of the [name]Valley[/name]”.
Okay, here we go!
[name]Abigail[/name] (I just love that name, it’s so gorgeous…Mmm? What? I’m biased?..Oh. Right. That’s MY name.)
[name]Devorah[/name] (Hebrew version of [name]Deborah[/name], it’s a nice twist)
[name]Dina[/name]
[name]Ariel[/name]
[name]Eden[/name]
[name]Eva[/name]
[name]Hannah[/name]
[name]Jemima[/name]
[name]Martha[/name]
[name]Naomi[/name]
[name]Rebecca[/name]
[name]Zipporah[/name]
Good luck!
For biblical names I like
[name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Moriah[/name]
[name]Leah[/name]
[name]Dinah[/name]
[name]Junia[/name]
Too bad about [name]Lydia[/name]. It is so gorgeous. My favorite biblical girl’s name is [name]Mary[/name]. I am in love with it. I also like:
[name]Leah[/name]
[name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Elizabeth[/name]
[name]Rebekah[/name]
[name]Rachel[/name]
My favorite biblical girl names are:
[name]Rebecca[/name]
[name]Susanna[/name]
[name]Julia[/name]
[name]Eve[/name]
[name]Lilith[/name] is a Biblical name that might be a nice alternative to [name]Lydia[/name].
I also love [name]Eden[/name], [name]Eva[/name], [name]Lois[/name], and [name]Leah[/name]. other nice options are [name]Martha[/name], [name]Rhoda[/name], [name]Tabitha[/name].
[name]Lilith[/name] is Biblical folklore not literally in the Bible. I wouldn’t have thought of it as directly comparable…?
Anyway my favourite girls’ Bible names are:
[name]Naomi[/name]
[name]Leah[/name]
[name]Hannah[/name]
[name]Tamar[/name]
[name]Esther[/name]
[name]Keziah[/name]/[name]Kezia[/name]
[name]Michal[/name]
[name]Mara[/name] (A seperate Biblical person from [name]Miriam[/name] or [name]Mary[/name] but a related name)
[name]Noa[/name]
[name]Yael[/name]
Ruhama
[name]New[/name] Testament I like:
[name]Martha[/name]
[name]Susannah[/name]
[name]Tabitha[/name]
[name]Phoebe[/name]
Variants:
I am not especially keen on [name]Rachel[/name] but don’t mind the Spanish [name]Raquel[/name] or Hungarian [name]Rahela[/name]. Since the Bible wasn’t written in English…? I dunno how you’d feel about something like this.
I also like feminizations of many male Biblical personages. I don’t know if that would work for you. My religious name (not legal name… just used in services and so on) is [name]Yosefa[/name] [name]Tzippa[/name] [name]Leah[/name]… [name]Leah[/name] was a biblical woman, [name]Yosefa[/name] is a spin on [name]Yosef[/name] ([name]Joseph[/name]). And [name]Tzippa[/name] in the middle there is a diminutive of Tzipporah, rather like being called [name]Sue[/name] instead of [name]Susannah[/name].
